Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton avoided a 16 month prison sentence by killing himself via carbon monoxide poisoning 12 years ago today (who wants to die of cancer in the pen?)
May he rest in peace. We will continue to carry on his art and remember his legendary life

Seriously? If the prison dramcoms I've watched are any reflection of real prisons, Popcorn Sutton would've been a legend in prison. What with his backyard chemistry skills, he could've made primo pruno that inmates would kill to get.

    1. Should have named yourself "JiffyPop" corn Sutton to emphasize the parody.
    2. I don't believe Popcorn ever used a specific gravity hydrometer. He did a shake test after distillation to measure proof. How the hell he and other shiners are able to determine the proof from the size of the bubbles and how fast they pop, I'll never understand.

Ok so you got the bare basic idea but forgot a major component amalays the enzyme that is found in malted grains that actually turns the starches in corn ect into sugars so the yeast can eat them and produce alcohol so with this mash you really only have a sugar wash not a true mash

Very good ! This is correct! I’d like to add that Amylase enzymes refer to Amylase A and amylase B (which are collectively referred to as diastase). They both consume the molecules that compose starch (amylose and amylopectin ) and transmute them into glucose, Maltose, and maltodextrose. These (simpler) sugars are yeasts food source!

You are making a corn flavoured sugar wash, this is definitely not what Popcorn made. You are better off just fermenting the sugar and throwing some corn into the thumper or still for flavour if a corn flavoured sugar wash is what you are after. Popcorn did add sugar to his grain mixtures but only to boost the ABV not as the entire base of the product.

Popcorn only told all his moonshine making secrets to only 2 or 3 other people, and they certainly aren't talking about sharing it anytime soon. but as Popcorn always said, the only way you are gonna learn about it is to do it yourself. In the movie he told the ingredients, but not what amount of each. Yellow sweet corn, yellow corn malt, sugar by the 50 pound bag. He did it perfectly. theres your foundation. Go make some and try your hand. Not as easy as you might think.. I would think his friend, and life long companion, J.B. Rader would know also, but he won''t be telling anything either

A mash is the process of converting starches to fermentable sugars.
Without some malted barley or enzymes you can just save the money from the corn meal by not adding it to this sugar wash, the corn meal isnt doing anything to make any fermentable sugars.
Malting grain develops the enzymes (α-amylase, β-amylase) required for modifying the grains' starches into various types of sugar, including monosaccharide glucose, disaccharide maltose, trisaccharide maltotriose, and higher sugars called maltodextrins.
A simple recipe from the Master himself: Popcorn Sutton!
    Author: MoonshineRecipe.org
    Ingredients
    5 lbs of Sugar
    4 gallons Filtered Water
2 1/2 lbs of Coarse Ground White Corn Meal
1 small packet Yeast (preferably Distiller's Yeast)
1 gallon of Malt (rye, corn or barley)
    Equipment -
    Boiling Pot
    Fermentation Bucket
    Airlock
    Siphon Tube
    Cheesecloth
    Moonshine Still
    Instructions
Add 1 gallon of water to the pot and bring it to boil.
Add cornmeal and cook, don’t forget to stir occasionally.
Remove the heat and let the cornmeal cool down some, then add the remaining water, then mix in the sugar and ground malt.
Transfer mixture into the fermenter, let it cool to room temperature then add yeast.
Let the mash ferment completely until no visible activity can be detected.
Rack the wash off the yeast sediment with a siphon tube into the still's boiler.
    Distill the wash as normal.
    Notes
Classic Popcorn Sutton mash undergoes open fermentation, so just need to cover the bucket with a cheesecloth and let it ferment.
Preferably use a copper pot still for this one in order to keep it true to the way Popcorn Sutton used to do it.
Manage the cuts thoroughly, as you’re aiming for the very hearts to get that legendary moonshine flavor.
Adjust recipe to size of container. Cornmeal should equal about half or less of container.

Of all the replies none of yuns stated something the man himself said in his video the last run. He had numerous different recipes and none of em were ever put on paper. Even his best friend JD has no damn clue what those were. In all likelihood Popcorn had a general recipe he used and no 2 runs were the same. It's not hard to understand when you've grown up around the life and know that everything you need for a specific recipe isn't always available and you make dew with what you have. Lastly if not for the tv drama series I don't have to name 90% of ya wouldn't have a clue who he was.RIP Popcorn.

JB Rader .. a .25 pounds white corn meal or maze to a gallon water .. 1 lb sugar per gallon water. . After you make your slop in your 5 gallon bucket or 300 gallon slop pot .. your gonna take two packets of yeast you want your water at no warmer than 90 degrese .. when it works off Your fingers will not be sticky that means the yeast has worked off .. remember toss 50 mililiters off the first pint .. that is methonal .acetone it will mess you up ..

    WRONG WRONG WRONG.....
You made what is called Sugar Shine.. Steeping corn in hot water converts it to a starch slurry.. YOU THEN have to convert the starch to glucose (sugar). That is done with Malted grains such as barley or rye or malted corn. You can also use a chemical called Amylase enzyme.. This video basically demonstrated how to make sugar shine with a "hint" of corn flavor. Distilled sugar shine tastes horrid

Wrong! You must hold at 155 deg F then add a malted grain or Amylase Enzyme to convert the starch in the corn to fermentable sugar. What you are making a corn water flavored sugar wash. Total waste of corn. Prepared cornmeal for baking has additives in is unsuitable. Grind your own.
