A Tour Of Our Backyard Trails While Testing The GoPro Hero 10

- This is a tour of our backyard mountain bike trails as of Fall 2021. It's been a very rainy year so on the occasions that the weather was nice, I opted to go riding instead of building. As results we didn't do a whole lot of building this summer. This video is also an excuse to test out the New GoPro Hero 10 before I use it for a real video. I wanted to make sure it was setup right, test the color, and to see how it worked in a low light situation.

“Rock drop” *gets 4 seconds of hang time*
Phil is just real, my friends. That's what we love about him and his channel. Not a commercial. Not pushing a brand (personal or corporate). Just real - and really fun riding & content.
I’m grateful to GT for making sure he had bikes. Apart from that, it’s just a good dude doing bike stuff with his missus.
Agreed
New trail is going to be Hailey's Comet
Also came here to post this
that's exactly what I said
prefect
Me too... I thought I was onto a winner here lol
Yes yes yes!
This backyard is what dreams are made of. So much fun.
I don`t know if it my Pc but it seemed really blurred while you ride fast while in 1440p
It's not you. Cameras struggle filming in low lighting situations, but the also struggle when it's bright out because of the contrast between highlights and shadows. I was hoping the overcast lighting would help, but it's just a bit too dark for the electronic image stabilization on the GoPro to work properly and that's why it's all blurry.
@@SkillsWithPhil glad to know. Im tried to figure out my footage from highlands last week isn't the best.... thought it was my render.
@@SkillsWithPhil I've seen some settings that can help. I believe fiddling with the white balance should help with the darker rides.
@@SkillsWithPhil oh ok thanks
Its the automatic shutter speed going to a a bigger fraction of a second and therefore there is more motion blur. It would be nice if this could be controlled manually as well as aperture and iso.
The unnamed trail should be Haley's Comet. 😀
I don't hate it! Hailey was the one that wanted to have a trail go off that rock, and since comets are basically rocks i think that's a solid candidate.
@@SkillsWithPhil Rock solid!
@@SkillsWithPhil “Hail Yes”. (With a southern drawl)
Great riding as always and nice to get a full view of the progress on your backyard, pretty jealous of having a own little bikepark in the backyard.
Sweet.and even better you guys did all of that together. You cant beat it and your kids will never leave home, ever.
What a back yard! 😀 Awesome "real world" video Phil - loved it
Mine just came in and I can’t wait to test it out! The colors and stuff do look really good even in the low light! Your back yard is insane by the way! Looks like a dream come true!
Your wood features are so sick! I enjoy your feature build videos, I’m building in my woods and it’s always good to see what other people are building to help brainstorm!
Its crazy how much you have gotten done this year !! keep it up :) Looks amazing already
I really like these trail videos thanks for showing more of them 👏😁
Great video, Phil! It was nice meeting you both at the Trails event Thursday! I will study this closely as I plan mine. Thanks for the great content. Your bunny hop video is on repeat :)
Having a backyard trail system is the dream, Great job!
Cool trail/backyard tour! Including “The Trail That Shall Not Be Named”. Keep doing what you do!
Thanks for the tour! That was fun to watch
Unique trails!!
So dope to be able to ride in your own backyard
I've got a friend with the GoPro Hero 10 and he let me use it while we were doing some really fun trails. The GoPro is amazing and you should definitely keep using it.
Your backyard is fantastic! Nice work. And I love Hailey's jacket! :-)
Love the layout bro!
Nice! I still have my 8 and it’s working well!
Acoustic bikes.....I like that. :)
Your footage is all a+
Hallies hustle 👌🏻
smooth cruz drop
Love your trails, great job! I think you should host an XC race there. I second the Hailey’s Comet name.
Your backyard is a mtb dream
Phil = GOAT
Nice Phil. Back yard looks insane!!! Name for that trail Fern Flow cause thats all you see are ferns.
Nice vid Phil keep em up
How much travel are you blowing through after that rock jump? Around 16:20
Great vid mate!
I’m so jealous u have the perfect trails
Looks good Phil
AWESOME...
Cool trail👍👍
Hayley's Roam sounds like a good name for that trail.
Really cool!
Looks like its almost time for a leaf blow!
The trails were leaf blown the day before!
Leaf blown is jail time if you’re part of southern NH NEMBA 😂😭😂😭😭
I’m not sure if it would be what you would want to make but listening to you talk and watching you ride mellow trails is really nice. Could do a chill long form series 👍
Great Video
Given that the unnamed trail finished with the rock drop, Let there be rock, would work for a name
Looks like you could have a great Cyclocross race there!
You could call the unnamed trail 'Sidedrop' or 'Sidewall', as it appears to have the the same little wall that the other trail has, and is to the side of it, with a rock drop.
The the tool house!!!!!
Lookin good! Can't wait to see more videos with the new gopro
One of my favorite towns in Colorado is called “No Name”. Maybe that should be the name of that trail. 🤙
Talking about not liking to pedal just reminds me on Steve Romanuk talking back in the Drop in series - "no one like to wear out their chain" 😂
My ideal trail would be a semi natural downhill pump track medley. Ones with a ton of line options and which take several runs to learn. Those are the trails I enjoy the most.
@@SkillsWithPhil that kinda trail is definitely super fun! Not too many around that I know, I am the other side of the world though. Some amazing trails here in Australia. Just gotta travel to ride them, a little tricky with lockdowns going down. So much amazing work going into trails. I love seeing all of the build videos like yours.
... And on last thing to finish, I went looking for Steve Romaniuk saying the chain thing. Didn't find that but I love the early 2000s freeride stuff like his. Drop in was an amazing series czcams.com/video/B39fV7yemDM/video.html
The Loam Ranger just did an awesome review on settings.
Anybody else notice a focus issue (@ 0:51 for instance) when Phil is peddling up hill and is sorta surging? Also, what's up with the "stabilization" at 0:41? I feel like my 7 black could do at least as good a job as the 10! (Watching on a 55" tv in 1440p).
Yup it's dark in the woods and the Electronic Image Stabilization used on GoPro's fall apart resulting in a blurry image. Then that get compounded with CZcamss Video Compression and the result is not ideal. And since you're watching that on a 55 inch TV it's only going to make those issues more apparent.
Drive thru worker - "Hi, what would like today?"
Me - "I'll take two Big Doubles"
Yeeeess!!!!🥳🥳
Hey I noticed on your website that you use crushcore inserts. Do you also use tubeless sealant with that setup? I just got a bike and I’m trying to set it up, to where I wont damage my rims. Thanks
Dude that leaf on his front tire was bugging
Nice! Hero 10, I'm curious haha
@Skills With Phil nice garden ...any plans on using fallen trees to make skinnies? ( skinnies dont have to 20" high northshoresque but low ones) or maybe trials bike style stump steps or other such obstacles
I have already. It's one of the last features in the video. :)
@@SkillsWithPhil ya just saw that, at my local riding spot( a maintained state forest) we ask the loggers if they could leave some of the lesser quality logs behind and we built low inconspicuous skinnies, next to the existing trails. these are low risk skinnies for all skill levels as many newer riders use these same trails. some are easy and some are very hard but if you fail youre not going to break your neck or bike and thats good for confidence building then they can go and do some of the more "dangerous risky" stuff
hahaha I had a chuckle, "big double" is on the menu at Cookout, an North Carolina/South Carolina (I think theres on in Virginia) fast food chain.
potential new trail name "Haley's Comet"
Love the video tour.
That skinny always looked difficult to me. I’d watch a video edit of you sessioning it.
How about “Haley’s Lead” - since she took the lead on it.
I’d love to c you ride lower rider at killington Phil! Trails very sweet go try the go pro there
Acoustic Bike omg lol
hey phil, what go pro angle do you use chin, chest?
I loved watching the owl have his bath. Does that flow or us it just a puddle? I was thinking Hailey,s Comet 💫 good name fir the trail.
The unnamed trail should be called engineer
when your backyard is your private mountain haha
So awesome. What state are you in?
Phil, would you ever do the Megavalanche race?
How many acres and how much elevation are you working with?
following to see response
Backyard enduro race, you could start with a backwards climb up one of those new descents. That way when you come back down and climb up again it's a different climb. Just to keep it interesting. And if it's the first climb up there shouldn't be any chance of someone coming down while someone comes up? 🤔
just a cool thought on the first trail, jump over rock wall?
That bridge @ 16:30 needs to be gapped with that amount of speed...just throw a stick down in front of it and use it to boost over 😎🔥
Oh I have, it took me a bit to dig up the clip!
czcams.com/video/YegxxwveSkk/video.html
@@SkillsWithPhil I just knew it! Thanks for taking the time to share that brother🤙🔥
Chicken noodle for the trail
The unnamed trial should be the smooth-edge
amazing backyard but u have to build more jumps on those straight trails
You should build a pump track!
What did you name the unnamed trail ? Really dig the videos - thanks man
I'm waiting for your e-bike video
the trails are coming along nicely. looks great. you should think about getting a mototrials bike, your property looks like it has some great features for it. I'm jealous and wish I had some land like yours available to me. thanks for sharing.
No pedaling required!
Huge chicken of the woods mushroom at 5:34. those are delicious, go scoop those up!
Yup, we plan to!
Saw that one too
a name for the trail is {rusty crusty} {chain gang} {sawwtooth} {return to sender}
Hey Phill
U should call the un-named trail, foot down as theres no berms but theres corners? Thatd be cool
Natural is better, vivid is way to saturated and looks like a cartoon/game
edit: btw your back yard looks like a hell of a lot of fun
is it running at 60fps? Seems a little choppy.
The one thing I wish GoPro would implement is type of minimum shutter speed or even shutter priority mode for these changing/low light situations. For example, Id LOVE to tell my GoPRo to never go below 1/48 of a second and increase ISO in the woods if need be to avoid blurry footage from too slow of shutter. And then when it's bright enough to increase shutter and keep ISO at 100. #dreams
I agree. I did have the ev comp set to -1 which in retrospect didn't help but i dont think it was bright enough in the woods to make the stabilization to work great anyway. I'm hoping they can milk a bit more low light noise reduction out of the GP2 so we can run higher ISOs for better image quality and hopefully better stabilization.
That being said, Abe has an interesting setup using GoPro labs that enables a minimum shutter speed and max ISO. I haven't touched that yet, and it requires the gopro labs setup.
We can see that the even The NEW GOPRO is struggling in the low light conditions (i.e struggling to Stabilize in the low light conditions)of Phils backyard in fall
How much land do you have Phil?
so fucking cool i cant image to have this in my backyard and good camera but little blury
Phil, I ride my longboard to get around the city. I am always getting passed by electric longboards but prefer the lightweight (pickup and go) nature of a normal board. I call it an "analog board" so you can call your bike an "analog bike"
i recomend using 4k 60fps superview hypersmoot on mtb
I love a good nose bonk hah
4:15 😂😳
Nice footage
Do you prefer a trail bike instead of enduro bike
I like both equally they are just different tools for different jobs. Trail bikes are perfect for most trails around me, but for the rougher trails and bike park days I'll grab my enduro.
@@SkillsWithPhil awesome love your skills on the enduro trsil cool bike 😍
I really like your videos, but it would be cool if you did the audio in post as a voice over. I’ll keep watching either way, but it makes a huge difference IMO.
Do a video about your ebike!
I was going to suggest Hailey's Comet since she ask to take the lead it just seemed to fit but I see many others already came up with that
It's honestly not a bad idea at least for the rock drop.
I have learned a lot from your videos and while I will never reach your skill level, you have improved my skills and for that I thank you
Why did u take out the lip that was on the 2nd wood feature on toad rd?
This video explains it czcams.com/video/O_RuJEEI8f8/video.html
Jury is out on the 10 based on this video. Where was the camera mounted?? It was way off center to the right for whatever reason, which was different than usual, and a little distracting. I could tell the dark was going to mess with the stabilization, and I'm sure your 7 would have done the same, so that really wasn't a good indication or comparison. I'm wondering if you upped the ISO to 1600, and EV comp to +1, if it would have helped the stabilization at all? You may have tried that. Either way, GREAT video as always, and man...I just love your channel, and love what you're doing with it! You, Nate, Pilgrim, and Seth....still the gold standard!
Helmet cam. I have the iso bumped to 3200max and usually run the ev comp at -1. In this case i bumped the EV to -5. In retrospect I would have had it set to 0 or +.5. Normally I'm worried about it being too bright.
@@SkillsWithPhil ...Thanks for the recap on the settings! I completely understand that approach, and that's what I fight here in Arkansas....blown out trails with the EV comp too high. Despite not liking it nearly as well as chin mount, I still like that view better than chest mount. I'm just over seeing top tube and stem, and it's gotten worth with people using the 9 and 10 with no gimbal. Yes, it's faster looking, but I find myself wanting to see the trail, which is why I'm watching in the first place!!
