    There's a new Green Lantern movie, and that unfortunately gives us an opportunity to discuss unreasonable expectations, and the difference between the existing fandom vs the actual target audience of an adaptation.

    Personality the first experience that I had with Green Lantern was through the Green Lantern: The Animated Series. The show used to be on CN when I was a kid and I loved every minute of it. Relatively recently my favorite character from that series appeared in another show I like, Young Justice, and I was happy to see him again.

    My only problem with it is that they made Hal Parallax and killed him
    Like why couldn't John save Hal and have Hal rebuild the green lantern core with John staying on earth as it's green lantern

    Honestly I'm all for interesting adaptations. The only thing I get nervous about is when a character's traits are changed to a point where its a completely new character altogether. I won't say no to changes, but it would be weird to (for example) make Hal a big jerk who is actually pretty fearful and a reluctant hero and still make him the brave and good hero we know him as when there was little to know character development. Sound familiar?

    I liked it with mixed feelings. Its a mostly good story, but its literally Kyle Rayner's story just with John. I think its confusing and takes away from both characters. Then some silly plot elements such as everyone being ridiculously aggressive before talking. Then John learning the oh so challenging lesson Killing=Bad only for Arrow to undercut it by killing the boss. Still I can't say no to be beautiful SPACE and ring constructs.

    I agree with you that fans should go into this film with open eyes and not judge based on what they wanted to see. However this movie was really bad like "C-" bad.... it honestly feels like it was written by someone who doesn't understand green lantern at all... It feels like they just read the most popular green lantern stories and tried mashing all of them together to create this frankensteins monster of a film and not to hate any of the people responsible for writting, producing, blah blah blah but judging at a final product it's lack laster

    It was an enjoyable and awesome movie, I like the story idea, art, and love John as well but what kinda ticked me off is that as we all know, Kyle is tossed aside pretty much in any media. And now he doesn't even get his origin story. The whole being the last lantern, fighting parallax, and rebuilding the corps was kyle's arc, the ones that make him special. Newer generations who would watch this movie will think that it's John's origin. It will slowly but surely phase out Kyle Rayner. I still like the movie, it was fun seeing parallax-hal storyline adapted into a movie, but it's just sad for me to see it happening to Kyle. Every year he gets phased out intensely and it hurts me watching it.

    I didn't know this movie had received such a hostile reception. My response was simply "meh", because I'm not a John Stewart fan, I find the character too petulant, arrogant and unfriendly, but DC animated movies are generally good, even if the plot is a bit weak, so I was planning to take a look at it eventually. Out of curiosity, does John have the same personality than in the the JLA animated series?

  • @andersonh1
    @andersonh1 Před 2 lety +10

    You're way too kind. This is not a good Green Lantern movie, and it's honestly not even a good movie. It's a string of action movie cliches and bad dialogue. The actual action is pretty good, but without a good plot and good dialogue to support those scenes, and the whole thing just falls apart. And that's before we even consider how hollow a character John Stewart must be since they had to give him Kyle Rayner's origin and Hal Jordan's best friend and biggest enemy, since apparently John has no history or personality or enemies or origin of his own. Everything he has in this movie is taken from other characters.

  • @AtomizedSound
    @AtomizedSound Před 2 lety +9

    Yes they told the story they wanted too but why did they write and tell the story they wanted to in the way they did? I appreciate you being open minded more and I consider my life to be open minded to all kinds of things and easy going when it comes to whatever usually. People will like what they like though and identify with in a given character or franchise. I’m open for a GL other than Hal be the focal point for a change, if done well and respect the origins of the other character. Why did they mashup origins of other GL characters to make one for John? Why couldn’t they use the actual origins of John and pull from the many, many GL stories that’s already out there that represent the character better to the general audience? There’s questions I think you are missing the point too just for the sake of us getting a new GL film and saying we as fans don’t get to o decide how one is made to validate our thoughts and feelings for the franchise. I agree to a certain extent that we shouldn’t dictate and sway the writers or directors feelings or opinions on the movie and art they want to make. However, it’s a bit of a mixed bag when DC should know it’s been 11 years since the last animated DC GL film? Those were great films in respect to what they brought and adapted overall. I feel they missed the mark overall and respect of what makes These characters who they are and what drives their personality. I’m saying that since this is the establishment of a new animated universe and not a stand alone elseworlds story which is what I ultimately classify this film as regardless if it’s not. It has some good aspects but overall the cons outweigh the film and what it brings to the table. This film getting the bad or mediocre rap that it does will determine I feel future GL films which now might be far off because of the reception of this new one.

    I think you are very generous by giving it a grade B. Imho, it is a solid C at best but because it follows the really good Catwoman and Justice Society movies, it feels like this movie is much worse. Tbh, it feels like one of the old Marvel animated movies and those were rarely any good. There's a lot I could nitpick about this movie, but I'll instead say I loved how John's character is portrayed and I really liked how they adapted the various stories together. My main issues come from filmmaking techniques not from the story itself. It felt like they were telling an adult anime story in a Saturday morning cartoon for kids. I don't know how somethings feels both rushed and slow simultaneously, if that makes any sense, but this movie does. And unfortunately relying on nostalgia in movies will leave you open to the most narcissistic of responses to said movie.

  • @swng314
    @swng314 Před 2 lety +3

    I do hope my expectations didn't colour my view of the movie.
    That said, it wasn't great...
    The best way I can put it is that the script feels clumsy. Plotlines happen but the characters don't feel organic.
    John gets the ring out of nowhere and is expectedly freaked out, but after an interaction with the league is all on board. Yes there's dialogue about how he's still hesitant for a bit after that, but it just feels tacked on. Shayera fights them and is all too easily recruited. Similarly quick recruitment for Adam Strange, though his character *does* has the proper background to already be motivated for this. I don't know if it's script or the rushed production on the voice actors that you speculated about, but end result, I didn't buy the characters.
    I did like the art style and I did **love** the fact that we finally got the Rann-Thanagar war portrayed in animation! It was hinted at in Krypton and in the JLvFF movie but never have we actually seen the war play out outside the comics, until now. Tied in with the 3rd party egging both parties on, it's a great message about how conflicts can be resolved with a dialogue.
    I'm saddened by the Emerald Twilight component of the movie with essentially John in the place of Kyle. RIP Hal; it really hurts to see the best GL fall to Parallax again... In some ways I hope this isn't part of their TomorrowVerse continuity so Hal's fall from grace isn't part of it; in some ways I *do* so that we can potentially see his redemption down the line (if his death can be reversed). But I understand that this sentiment is me putting my love for Hal into my evaluation of the movie.

    I honestly think you're right, I was too busy looking through the view of whether it adapted the source material directly or what it could set up for the future that I never truly judged it for the standalone movie it was.
    While I still dissagree on a few points (feel like John's PTSD and what he went through as a marine was glossed over more than it should've and some parts flat out made little sense in the context to the story and who was there) I can definitely enjoy parts of the movie and think overall people were too harsh on a product that we can definitely tell was rushed
    I definitely look forward to seeing more of this John, I just hope he manages to not fall down the same cycle the comics one fell into for a bit during the Johns run

    All we should want is a good movie, and I was looking forward to one starring John for a change of pace. It then failed to be a good movie, plain and simple.
    Too many storylines were stuffed into its main character, including that of three separate Lanterns, leading to terrible pacing and the inability for him to develop.
    The only characters with any kind of charisma in a franchise based on emotion-controlled powers were either dead, evil, or both. This does not bode well when we are supposed to care about John, Ollie, and so for.
    Characters people enjoyed from the comics were either butchered figuratively (Hawkgirl), butchered literally (Sinestro), or both (Parallax), without the changes being naturally stitched together coherently. This means that people who know and like the characters from the comics will be aggravated, and those who don't would be lost.
    As an adaptation, or as its own thing, Beware My Power sucks. When I find myself comparing it to the Ryan Reynolds movie instead of First Flight, then the film is in trouble. And when I'm not comparing it to either one, I still never wish to see it again.

    New adaptations and changing things can actually be really good but, straying too far and cramming more than one story/character is limiting its full potential.
    Condensing several stories means less material that could be pulled (and you can’t add to those stories anymore since they’re fused with another) combining characters means bringing the other character (who was combined) into a future movie but, it wouldn’t be the character we know. You never want to stray too far cause it’s not the same character/story to any extent. Like are we even going to get a Kyle rayner now?
    Also my issue is that the previous universe reset to bring a new hope to this yet the green lantern corps got screwed regardless. Also the corps should have been built up before they were massacred

    I loved the movie. Every single moment of it. Haters can hate all they like. This film pretty much made Hal Jordan the Anakin Skywalker of the Green Lantern Corps. He is The Chosen One of The Corps. Exalted. Honored. And like Anakin Skywalker, he turned on the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of Oa. And this movie is John Stewart Begins. A battle-hardened Marine who has seen and done things. And he was looking for a purpose in his life after leaving the battlefield. His unexpected recruitment into the Green Lantern Corps was meant to be uneasy and chaotic. Because John Stewart is the definition of The Reluctant Warrior. He's thrown into a conflict he knows nothing about and wants nothing to do with it. But at the end of the day, John is going to get the job done. And with help, he does exactly that. So I got what I wanted out of this movie. I know there are those who are in their feelings about Hal Jordan betraying the Green Lantern Corps. However, if they have complaints give them to the writers who did this to Hal in the 1990's.

    Wow, I don't think I've ever listened so such a smug and self-satisfied review. You spend 50% of this video characterizing anyone who thinks this movie is bad as fanboys who are not as enlightened as you and are incapable of accepting anything that doesn't strictly conform to their expectations.
    Well, I did not see the trailer and I tried to stay away from the discourse as much as possible (it was hard to avoid people talking the film down, I admit, but I tried my best to go into the movie unbiased) and I still thought this was a bad movie. There are plenty of things about the plot that are bad that have nothing to do with the comics.
    Like the movie never explains why did John have to be the last lantern? The Guardian flies all the way from Oa to Earth and tells John that he was looking for him...why? Is it because he has Hal's ring and Hal's successor just HAS to be from Earth? And he got all the way there and did not think to maybe contact the Justice League? Vixen or GA (can't remember which) mentions that they have had communications with the Guardians in the past, so the Guardian's know who the JL is, why did the dying Guardian fly all the way to Earth and just pass Superman's clubhouse without popping in to let them know his planet is dying and maybe ask for help? I guess getting the ring to John Stewart was more important than anything for whatever reason.
    And Sinestro, what is his motivation/plan again? Is he just an asshole who wants to kill people for fun? He "went rouge" and "saw through Guardian lies", I guess that translates to sabotaging the Rann-Thanagar peace and killing them all for...reasons? Eventually he becomes Hal's acolyte for no adequately explained reason and then just acts as his servant. Seems weird that a guy who's only real characterization is that he "went rouge" became subservient to a new master at the drop of a hat.
    Also how competent/powerful is Sinestro? In the flashback he pretty much singlehandedly takes down Oa but then he gets one shot by a rookie. When he removed John's ring and just tossed it aside, did he not think John would just call it back? Did he not know Lanterns could call their rings back?
    The Paralax entity, where exactly did that come from? Is it controlling Hal? Does it make him stronger? None of this is explained. And when Hal goes god mode, for some reason a guy who's had the ring for like what, 12 hours (and he spend about a third of that trying to get the thing off) is able to go toe to toe with him? I know John is a marine and everything, but Hal is literally described as the greatest Lantern in the universe AND he's in super sayian god mode or whatever. They needed John to come up with some clever way to beat him, the fact that they had John just be able to take him in a straight fight is laughable.
    I mean I could go on, but this comment is already way too long.
    And before you dismiss me as a slaty Hal fanboy who can't handle stories going against my preconceptions, Guy is my favorite Green Lantern, not Hal, and I STILL enjoyed Tom King's Human Target, so I am perfectly capable of getting passed "disrespect" to a character I like.

    I agree with the statement of everything is someone’s first, and I will not get angry at someone liking the film.
    But I really, and I mean really don’t like this film. For me this story essentially an origin is specifically key to Kyle Rayner. No matter what ElseWorlds or canon I wouldn’t like them taking away from Kyle’s story.
    For an example that’s like having Richard Rider being young and having Sam Alexander’s origin.

    It appears you want to avoid spoilers in this video so you're not talking about the real issue, but I don't buy that the negative reactions were simply fans not having their viewpoints validated. This isn't about needing to see Hal be the best or to see the comics represented. Taking a beloved character and making them the bad guy is very different than simply not acceepting that an adaptation is not the same as the comic. You're simply avoiding the real issue a lot of people have with the movie. There'd be a ton of bad reactions if a Hal movie involved John being the bad guy and Hal beating the crap out of him while teaming up with Katma to do it.

    • @MosaicComics
      @MosaicComics  Před 2 lety

      Yes, there would. Who that character is doesn't really matter, fans of the character would be mad either way. Certain fans have been particularly punchy lately, and I talked about it in the video because it's what I've personally seen the most of in the discourse surrounding this movie. I think the larger issue here is a matter of perspective, since at the end of the day, this is really just a mediocre Elseworlds story, with no real implications outside of itself. If the plot of this movie shows a hero become a villain, that shouldn't make anybody mad, because this movie has nothing to do with the cannon of the comics, where that same character is currently being depicted as a hero in a high profile book. Adapting these characters in a way that will (at best) be around for a few movies should take the sting out of any changes they choose to make, because those changes are confined to this version and this version is temporary.

    • @BenChanNYC
      @BenChanNYC Před 2 lety +1

      @@MosaicComics I get that you're attempting to address some of the larger internet discourse among angry fans, and in general I tend to let adaptations be their own thing and view it on its own terms. But if you want to talk perspective, The Cosmonaut Variety Hour has a good video about representation in media: czcams.com/video/PraUjsClgDM/video.html Basically, how characters are represented in non-comics media becomes how general audiences will view a character. Since the GL movie failed, general audiences have seen Hal be the butt of jokes by Ryan Reynolds, made fun of in Lego movies, etc and now a bad guy.
      Characterization in media matters, especially if we get future GL content and since most people don't read comic books, there's a decent chance he'lll continue to be presented this way - a way that general audiences have become accustomed. And that's something fans of a character would be upset about. So I don't think this is as temporary as you think. It's part of a larger discourse about how this character is treated in outside media.

      @@BenChanNYC Then I'd point you to the very large stack of direct to video animated movies featuring a very heroic Hal Jordan, among other Lanterns. GL First Flight, GL Emerald Knights, JL Crisis on Two Earths, JL Doom, JL vs Fatal Five, exc...and that's not even including all of the ongoing tv series that have good Green Lantern representation, like GL The Animated Series, JLU, DC Super Hero Girls, Batman Brave and the Bold, exc. These characters reputations aren't as fragile as some like to make them out to be, and there's way more good stuff out there than people seem to remember.

    It's sad that you ran a green lantern channel. This would be a bad movie with no knowledge of the comments. As characters had no motivations and things just randomly happened. That they used several fantastic stories to make a hodgepodge of a terrible story is no reason to get defensive.

    I disagree. I never read GL comics, but as a writer I see this lacks basic proper structure and fails on so many levels. Like - why is Shaira suddenly "me see, me kill" mindless soldier all of a sudden? She was never super smart but she wasn't dumb either. Why is Sinestro so stupid? Not only he doesn't take the weapons from his prisoners, he for some reason doesn't destroy John's ring even though he had many opportunities to do so. I could go on and on but so far the worst part was John beating another Green Lantern, who was 10 times more powerful and thousands of times more experienced because... plot demanded so. Literally that's the reason. He just beats Hal without any proper explanation and Hal lets him, even though he's supposed to be super evil and stuff. Also, why didn't ANYBODY think of getting the parasite out of him? I mean they didn't even try to do so.
    This movie is bad on so many levels it frustrated me, not even as a part of Green Lantern stories, but as a movie overall.

    The Tomorrowverse so far has been a decent follow-up to the New 52 universe. However this is definitely the first bad movie in this universe! Not only it is adapting an already divisive story but it somehow made it even worse by sucking out every remorse we might have felt about Hal Jordan, while also making John Stewart unlikable! Speaking of Hal, I never thought I'd see the day, but I have to be honest here, Nolan North is really bad in the role! He is just using his generic Colonel Sawyer voice from Cod Zombies and its just such an uninterested performance for such an important story! Honestly this movie felt like the old days where I didn't care at all about the Green Lanterns. No matter how many they introduce, the ones people will always love are only Hal Jordan and John Stewart! Although I will say out of all the new ones Jessica cruz has the most potential to become more interesting if she has a decent adaptation.

    I don't think it's a bad movie at all. They introduced and told an incredible story arc for John Stewart and the rest of the cast. Green Arrow with a lot of charisma and Adam Strange seemed incredible to me. I had my problem with the design of Sinestro and the fact that the Sinestro Corp was not presented as a Lantern Corp clearly, but it never got me out of the movie. DC is in dire need of cosmic storytelling and this is a very entertaining one, full of incredible elements. Hal Jordan was pretty good, I don't understand the annoyance of some, not everything should be focused on Jordan, it doesn't make sense. Anyway, great video, although it was the minimum pauses in the dialogues, the rest of the things you found did not jump out at me.
    I hope you get to make videos about the lantern power feats throughout the history of DC Comics, I think you have content for a new list of videos with a lot of potential.

    "They made the choices they made based on the stories they wanted to tell." This can't be understated tbh, it really does depend on the story the author is trying to tell honestly. I'll be honest im not a fan of this movie because it seems to be treading down this line that keeps happening to Hal that extends to other media as well where he either is a villain or gets defeated easily or does something that makes him a joke, like I do feel like DC doesn't like Hal anymore and goes out of their way to either minimize him or play him in a negative light. Im aware that I am probably succumbing to paranoia and am wrong, but I do feel like Hal's appearances as of late in other comics like DC vs Vampires, the recent Batman and Superman World's Finest, (even if he is under the influence.) are selling this image that Hal is an irresponsible mess and shouldn't be the face of GL anymore. Oddly enough Thorne's run actually treated the character pretty well.
