hi you need to watch LR Time then change your oil again from what he calls 5w dumbass to 5w 40 as he makes a good argument for the thinner oil contributing to early snapping of the crankshaft also telling you how to check if you need to fit a modified oil pump.....enjoying your videos thanks

I’ve had one, and will have another in a heartbeat! They are massively complicated beasts, 90% related to the canbus system. The amount of times mine crapped itself, put the suspension in access mode etc, was usually down to a knackered brake bulb or headlight bulb! Best truck I’ve ever had! There is nothing else out there that is such a fantastic allrounder for the money!

On these engines you should always release the oil filter first of all or it'll hold nearly a litre of waste oil then when you put the sump plug back In and then change the filter any waste oil ends up in the sump and mixes with your fresh oil !! I used to work for JLR and the amount of apprentices that ended up overfilling them was mad as you got a metered amount of oil for that vehicle from The dispenser, of course then it would run up on its own oil and rev to destruction!! And you really don't want that Ben 👍👍great episode 👌 great vehicles 👌

Drip tray LOL there's a LR owner talking, If you had not bought the Gash Spec bottom of the range (ok you can get a lower spec one with non air suspension) but manual as well! You went for entry level ! LOL! Ive had 3 discos and 2 freelanders and I can say that my wife's 2 citroens have broken down...not on days Ive needed to take her car to work as one of my LRs would not start but at least owning a disco3 you can drag the wife's Citroen C1 out of a ditch sideways. Great video and I agree as a Disco3 owner it is a great car to own although I have a HSE with the heated seats and twatnav cream leather and loads of warning lights on the dash! PS. the steering wheel needs the factory HSE spec radio to bluetooth too, the radio tells the cruise control on the Can Bus lines as I understand it as a mechanic of 30yrs. Great video will pop my disco round to you for a service and wash please xx

I’m really enjoying your content and variety of cars! I’m on my 4th Disco, now running a 2016 D4. For the money, nothing compares and capability wise, they’re no different to the latest LR product. If you haven’t already, clean the MAF and MAP sensors; they get full of carbon deposits and will eventually throw up errors put it into the dreaded limp home mode. Cleaning the MAF may also improve the MPG. It’s a really simple job 👍🏼

Ben, a great episode as ever 😊
I've got a Disco four and was a bit concerned about taking one on due to their reputation.
It does throw up random faults and the build quality is questionable (trim falls apart when you look at it 😂) but as a tow vehicle nothing compares.
I tow a converted Horsebox and it does it with ease.
mpg dropped by 0.09mpg, you could barely feel it was lugging anything behind😊
Looking forward to more episodes 😊😊

Had that engine in my Jaguar XF. Totally bullet proof - but it did get frequent oil changes - not 19k apart!!! Did you r re place the sump plug??? You’re not supposed to re-use them though I’m sure it’s not necessary. The Jag always gave silly error messsges also - like low fuel level when you’ve just filled up. Just slap it, tell it not to be silly, turn it off and on again and all is fixed.

As far as I can work out the discovery is a good reliable 4x4 and the only thing that seems to let them down is the electronics
And as you've said they sold 100s of thousands of them so if the majority of them are good then ownership of one is as good as anything else of similar age and milage
My old volvo v70 2.4 petrol does an average of 34mpg and still runs like a watch been up and down from Bedfordshire to Devon quite a few time with absolutely no issues

Welcome to land rover ownership my advice doing any work , jacking up the rover I recommend unplugging battery, I own a possessed 07 land rover lr3 hse when fix one thing something else brakes , never I mean never crawl under this vehicle that has a air suspension always use Jack's to put the weight on , I replaced all control arms all air suspension springs air compressor now I have a suspension fault , I replaced both front height senors now still won't raise don't get me wrong I love the lr3 I only paid 1100. Us dollars from copart , I also had to replace radiator, water pump, all antifreeze hoses , steering shaft , funny thing is the rover suspension worked perfectly until I replaced all suspension parts 😮 I kinda wish I bought a discovery 2 because of solid axles , for bigger tires I think they are better for offroad, I seen some here in US really build up , I also bought a Terrafirma rear swing out tire carry and rock sliders I highly recommend, check your spare tito make sure the hoist works , I wish mine was a 6 speed. Manual mine automatic, good luck if you not hear of Lr time channel this channel all about land rover lr 3/4

Costs...... Next to nothing if you do it yourself. Reliability all comes down to maintenance, but the spares are so cheap. Why wouldn't you?
Wouldn't go any newer than that because new cars and electronics frighten me. Even the L322 ecu's are pretty primitive and easily replaced if needed. Your Disco is a peach but keep all maintenance up otherwise she will bight you.

I swapped from Land Rover to Jeep about 8 years ago, and haven't regretted it.
I love driving Land Rover's, but you just get sick of all the stupid little faults and spending your life under them or in the engine bay.
Biggest difference I've noticed is yours is a base model, so is my Grand Cherokee, but I have cruise control, blue tooth, navigation etc and I'll bet the original prices weren't that different.
Also they are both V6 diesel 3 liters and pull 3 ton loads. Yet the Jeep will do 30+ mpg. Are you sure yours doesn't have a dodgy O² sensor? Or something.
This is not a who's is best post, just an observation.
Both companies appear to be going premium only and pricing us normal folk out of a new car.

Nothing wrong with Landrover Discovery. 99% of the time it’s because no one gets them serviced or pays them any attention just like any car. If you run them into ground what do you expect? They are also aimed at people with money which usually means they get looked after by their mechanic so they don’t see what goes wrong if anything.
