How to make a fishing gauge: Bad/Fair/Best

  • Seen this one? I used to use one just like this when i was in my teens as I ran the rivers . Its pretty cool and works , great experiment for the kids. discovercatfish...
    Fish on days when your fish gauge has the inner bottle water falling. Fish are more prone to be active when the water in the inner bottle is falling or low. If there is a lot of water in the inner bottle, it means slow bite. Less or no water in the inner bottle indicates best times.
    High Pressure: Typically means High skies or otherwise referred to as blue bird skies, clear with little to no clouds. Fish seem to become less active and will tend to move towards cover holding tight.
    Rising Pressure: Fishing activity seems to improve somewhat with improving conditions.
    Normal and Stable Pressure: The fish are active and feeding.
    Falling Pressure: Changing weather brings the best fishing opportunities as the fish become the most active at this point.
    Low Pressure: fish become less active during this cycle, weather can become rainy with storms.
    It’s import however to understand this is only a guide line and fun little family project to help get the kids involved. There is nothing guaranteed in fishing as there are also other variables which help determine your fishing out come.

    Steve, I hope you are still reading some of these comments. I am a teacher in Southern Indiana. When I saw your video I thought it would be a great classroom experiment. I love to fishing and many of my students fish as well. They loved making the fishing gauge and they watch it daily. The only bad thing is that we can't go fishing when the fishing gauge says it is good!! Thanks man! Hope all is well!

      there is such a thing, Barometric pressure changes all day long. Fish use a bladder of air to maintain depth. knowing if we are above or below 29.92 and if it is rising or falling makes all the difference.. As pressure rises the fish feel bloated and do not want to eat. But as pressure lowers they fell hungry . Where that pressure is tells you where to fish.. Below 29 they are at the top of the water above 29 they are at the bottom.
      FUCKING SCIENCE THE SHIT OUT OF DINNER!

      when the barometirc pressure drops it allows for humidity to form into droplets and that creates rain. When his little device here lowers the water level in the coke bottle it is because the air pressure outside the bottle is lowering. IE Barometric pressure is dropping!
      Fish have an air ballast bladder that is affected by this same pressure. When the pressure is high or rising they are bloated and do not eat.

      @@ronniepaulinc fish are affected by pressure differently at different water depths. Had an old timer walk past me in a trout park and say the pressure is dropping fish are biting deeper so I crimped on another split shot and caught my limit in the next hour after I had been there for 4 hours for 1 fish before. With higher pressure they won't want to feed anywhere but close to the surface

    This BAROMETER is very INACCURATE because a vacuum was never achieved. Allowing temperature to greatly effect the reading!!!! You need to fill the mason jar with a little water at bottom, then fill the coke bottle all the way to top, so no air is in the bottle at all. Then flip the bottle into the thin layer of water in mason jar and allow the coke bottle to drain into the jar until it reaches equilibrium. This will create a vacuum, because no air molecules move into the coke bottle and a stable vacuum will be created! Okay so how this works, temperature will have no effect on reading because no air molecules are inside the bottle. Therefore, only air pressure will cause the water level to fluctuate, and when air pressure increases, only the air molecules present in the mason jar will press down on the water and the water level will rise into the coke bottle, giving a accurate barometric reading! - Hope this helps!

      Yep, we grew up back in the 60's hearing all the old-time weather and fishing sayings... they were hit or miss at times, but more often than not, generally accurate.
      What I finally discovered in my late 50's though, is that the "best" time to go fishing, is *when you can*... and the "best place" to fish, is *where the fish are*.
      ;)

    So, it's been almost a year and a half, how has it stood up to fishing results? Did you have success on the days it indicated should be good fishing days?

    Thanks for this great idea Steve. My boys and I have made 4 of them. I'm gonna send one to school with each of them and take one to work. if I can get the air bubble out and level with the water line in the jar is this a good thing?

  • @doncoyotewindshiggens7722

    Thanks Steve for sharing that with us "Your Fans". I knew an old man who would say boys what cha doing? Going fishing better wait he say. OLD FARMERS ALMANAC says not a good time. He believed in the almanac. wish I had one of the mason Jars & Coke bottle back then. "I do now!"

      ... Agree ...
      People ask me, "When is a good time to go fishing?"
      My answer, "Anytime you can go."
      Time on the water is never wasted time.
      A simple guideline- "Fish in front of a front."
      The BP is low or dropping. The the fish are more comfortable therefore more likely to eat your bait or lure.
      . Jeff . Shallow water . Light tackle.

    Thanks Steve for the info. I made myself one of these and I used the Yellow food coloring. Lol. It's probably about like the green,doesn't look right at all. But it's clear and I can see it good. Just curious,are ya positively sure it's when the coke bottle has less water in it that makes it best for fishing?

    • @ronniepaulinc
      @ronniepaulinc Před 4 lety

      yes, the less water in the coke bottle the lower the barometer is. But prime time fishing is as the water is lowering. The whole reason this all works is the fish have a ballast tank of air that is affected by surrounding air pressure. So when the pressure starts to lower they start to eat. Waiting till the pressure is allready down givees the fish time to eat and acclimate to the new pressure.

    Don't know if you will reply back since this is an old video but here I go.
    Growing up my dad had one of these and we went fishing a lot. I always thought the higher the water went the better the fishing was. When there is low pressure, I heard that the fish were not active. Hope to hear from you.

    • @240LTS
      @240LTS Před 2 lety

      ... Exactly the opposite. Shallow fish are more comfortable/active in low pressure. Less pressure on their swim blatter.
