- Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that surrounds and protects your brain and spinal cord, builds up in the large cavities deep inside your brain called ventricles. This buildup can cause the ventricles to enlarge and press on brain tissue, disrupting its normal function.
