During a pilgrimage to Betania, Venezuela in 1995, a team of 12 of us were praying among ourselves in the open air chapel at the apparition site. When we looked up, we were surprised to see a line of Venezuelans patiently awaiting prayer as well. We prayed 5 hours with people, seeing incredible signs and wonders, including a miraculous healing of a 7 year old boy who had never walked in his life. We witnessed Our Lord building muscles on his emaciated legs. He walked away!
At one point, we felt the need to split up due to the growing numbers of people who were requesting prayer for healing. My mom reported praying in English with a woman who made her request to mom in Spanish, a language unknown to my mom. At the end of this brief prayer, the Venezuelan woman’s sister exclaimed in English, “She just prayed for everything my sister asked for!”
The gift of tongues is real, freely available to believers today!
Wonderful and inspiring explanation of Dr Mary Healy! Not that I ever doubted the value of this gift, but I was shocked to see videos of some very prominent persons claiming that the gift of tongues is protestant, a door to demonic possession, etc. I am so grateful for the gift of tongues, and above all for the Charismatic Renewal which brought me back to the Lord at the first retreat of Fr Rufus Pereira in Croatia in 1999. May the Lord bless all the people who love him with the gift of tongues!

Thank you for this explanation. I received the gift of tongues 44 years ago and my life was filled with a great love and hunger for God that has been with me to this day. I had come across a CZcams video that caused me to question it and I had stopped using it for fear that it might be from the devil as was proposed in the video I watched. However, that verse that you quoted about a child asking their father for bread…kept coming to my mind. Thank you for laying this out for me. Everything you said resonated with me and described my experience after receiving the gift of tongues to a “T”. I now have the confidence to pray again with this beautiful gift from God. As soon as Dr Mary Healy began to explain...great tears began to flow as I began to be so filled with Holy Joy I began to stir into flame the gift of tongues came out!!! Just utter joy of this praise!!

The Gift of tongues has always been an subject of contention. I think answering the "Why" of this would give great understanding and wisdom to the whole issue. Perhaps it is because it takes a faith-filled surrender and letting go of our control. This is hard for many. There may be a human need to understand God and when one cannot, they rebel. They fear Mystery. (Fear wants us to run away from Mystery) Perhaps God planned it to be a gift of contention, because it calls us to become like little children, trusting God completely. And, when God calls us beyond a faith of knowledge to a relationship with the Living God, our world is turned upside down, in a good way. Praise and worship is so very spontaneous and glorious. The Gift of Tongues calls us to more! Mary Healy's teaching is right on. Those that know, know!
Beautiful explanation! How prophetic to just what happened to me! I was at a homeless shelter praying for the poor and homeless. One of volunteers had been experiencing chronic headaches for six months since she quit a highly stressful job. We prayed and the gifts of tongues came upon me in a sweet, soft edification of the Lord, glorifying God Almighty. I felt the Electrical magnification of the Holy Spirit as she also! It had been years since the Holy Spirit bubbled out from within. I was moved. As I drove home, I found this podcast and listen. Thank you Dr. Mary Healy for your explanation because what you so beautifully explained occurred to me today! Come Holy Spirit Come!

Besides being excellent teaching on the gift of tongues, summarizing scripture and teaching of the church fathers, I really appreciate the teaching on Jubilation. This manifestation of the gift of tongues hasn’t been explained very much for many years - at least what I’ve seen-- and your explanation was excellent. I remember first hearing about jubilation more than 40 years ago and was so struck that it was mainly an expression of inexpressible joy in the context of loving God. Imagine that, happy, joyful Christians. Part of what made the whole teaching excellent was that instead of a spirit of criticism or anger or resentment, you revealed and displayed the Joyful Spirit. It is so Amazing how the Lord works! Dr Mary Healy, through technology, whom I have been listening to for years, has become a spiritual mother to me through her teachings and I cant thank Jesus enough for such a beautiful soul! Thank you Dr Mary!
Dr. Healy is brilliant. We see so much Catholic content by men, or women who only speak of "women's gifts"-as if the Holy Spirit discriminates which gifts are given to men vs. women. I thank you, Ralph, for inviting her on your show.

Thank you Dr. Healy. I am not in the Charismatic Renewal, but my parents were, and I saw the action of the Holy Spirit in their marriage, which had been unhappy for many years. I also am part of a charism recognized by the Church that is also attacked by some Catholics and even prelates, but has been endorsed by every Pope since its inception. It’s a shame that the Church is divided this way, but Jesus Christ is still in charge. One day we will once again be a sign of Love and Unity.
I remember years ago, Fr. Benedict Groeschel told a story about a couple who were speaking in tongues over by the crib of their baby who was sick.
They were just praying regularly and without thinking about anything they started speaking in tongues in prayer.
And eventually they stopped. It was not intentional!
It was not thought through it just happened.
I can tell you that I believe there’s too much emphasis in our brains about it.
If you get lost in prayer, it will happen not by your own power, but by the Holy Spirit.
I personally do not like discussions talking about how is tongues is manifest because it gives us our own mind set about it.
I think the best of speaking in tongues is when it comes without suspecting it will happen.
Unfortunately, when there’s large crowds, there’s a pressure of having to do that.
I personally think it’s better in private and in smaller groups where no one is thinking about it and are immersed in the Holy Spirit.

Thank you Dr. Healy. A great & timely explanation with lots of irrefutable examples to counter the arguments of the critics. I even heard an exorcist say he thinks most people are not praying in tongues & may be in danger of unknowingly praying demonically. That in particular shocked me. I’m sure you can find his videos on CZcams, but I’m so pleased to hear your explanations & esp. scripture references. God Bless. 🙏🏻

I never really understood why anyone would desire this before, but I have experienced the Holy Spirit his presence and miracles in my life in other ways - Praise God! So yes, anyway to be in the presence of God - I want it!

Thank you for this wonderful video! As a revert I am astonished how Catholics use the Protestant cessationists arguments against tongues . They remind me of the unbelievers in Acts 2:13 who mocked the Holy Spirit . It seems to be coming from the dissenters who mock Vatican II , the Ordinary Mass , and the Pope .
That is what happened to me. I became afraid because of what some were saying. Even though I often say to God if this is not from you and the Holy Spirit then take it away from me. But when I allow the spirit to pray 🙏 I become more at peace . I am so greatful you are helping us and confirming us. In my world I feel so much evil , I need the Holy Spirit. In toughens .

I was hoping Dr. Healy would expound on this subject after watching the trailer video. Forty years ago this month, I experienced a very mystical experience that involved praise in a foreign tongue. Being cradle Catholic and knowing the blowback I would receive from sharing this drove me down a long road until I read the Catechism. The Catechism and a very kind priest brought me back into fellowship w/ the Church after a lengthy reprieve. I believe it was a gift to renew my newfound faith after years of rebellion that ended in a most contrite state. God bless 🙏

Dr.Haley that has touched me deeply and I would believe it has fir many who have the gift if tongues , to encourage us to keep growing in the gift to the Honor and Glory of God. As well as to quell thise who have questioned and feared the gift .
Please excuse the typos..I'm sure you are able to read my heart in this reply. I'm in tears here as your teaching stirred up in me how much I so love offering God this gift in prayer to be used as the Holy Spirit chooses. Often in intercessory prayer.

Hello from Brazil!
Recently I've come across some of the criticisms the Charismatic Renewal is facing -- in great part, coming from a small group of traditional catholics, many of those who grow their ministries on waves of controversies like this one, to them it's another hot topic, another trend to grow their audience.
This video is a real gift. Not only with important citations but using a simple language to comunicate much of the wonders that the gift of tongues might offer.
I've never been part of the Charismatic Renewal nor have I prayed in tongues... It simply is not my jam. But, this whole controversy reminded me of how much I need the Holy Spirit in my life, that I must ask for it to keep going and starting anew. Thank you for the care to put this out.
May St. Paul and St. John Paul II interceed for the Charismatic Renewal and the whole Church.
A beautiful teaching on the gift of tongues by someone with years of fruitful experience. It is sad that those with little experience feel they are an authority on this gift. The gift requires humility and criticizing a gift of the Holy Spirit that you have little experience of is an act of pride. Countless Catholics have experienced the fruit of this gift that St. Paul spoke so highly of.
Thank you Dr Mary Healy. Your talk on tongues in the church is very instructive, informative, uplifting. We have had in the past in our parish a young pastor who claim, from the ambo, that tongues is 'gibberish'. These priests do an injustice to God's people. May the Lord keep you in His arms always.

Thank you very much. I was an avid opponent of all things related to the charismatic renewal, but now by the grace of the Lord, I am willing to get to know better and accept it.
One question though. Why don't we hear the saints talking about the gift of tongues or manifesting them? (Minus of course the couple of examples mentioned in this video)

I can relate. I’ve endured 50 years of criticism of my Catholic Charismatic spirituality. But all this has been well worth it. Remember, as Dr David DuPlessi said, “There is a COST in Pentecost.”
