    My Red tail was bought 10 months ago at 1.9 inches and is 20.5 inches now. And he is growing fast...He is definitely going to hit that 2 foot in a year mark.

    I have the same pool for my koi during winter. I made the mistake of completely draining it during the summer when the koi was outside in the pond. The liner dried out making the liner brittle and it got a hole in it. Highly recommend these!

    As a redtail owner I can tell you for a fact that a canister filter is not a good idea. Especially when they get to be full grown.
    My canister filter only took me so far before I had to make my own filter from a 55 gallon drum. That runs my 4000 gallon 18.5' x 8.5' pond.
    Owning a redtail catfish can be very enjoyable if you have a proper size setup.

    Have a very important question my retails are probably about 10 to 12" long I did it to tank changeover and they become very inactive and not eating But look very very healthy

    • @chrisescobar3979
      @chrisescobar3979 Před rokem

      Everytime you change your redtail into a new tank or pond, they tend to do that.
      When I moved mine from 1000 gallon pond into a 4000 gallon pond, he became inactive and refused to eat for 2 wks. But he was back to his old self after that.

    • @chrisescobar3979
      @chrisescobar3979 Před rokem

      If you don't have enough space for a redtail, don't get one.
      These fish are huge and strong.
      I rescued mine from an irresponsible fish keeper who had him in a 20 gallon tank. He now lives in my 4000 gallon Koi pond and he seems happy.
      To answer you question, he was 12" in a 20 gallon aquarium at a yr old. So that is a myth.

    An inch a month seems a bit slow, my baby titus has grew 3 inches in the month i have had him lol i also heard you say a grow out tank is a bad idea but i cant see how? I mean i know you need to have a plan but i feel like the statement should have been worded better lol grow outs are good but always be 2 or 3 steps ahead for reds, they grow fast as a general rule. I say you need to start them as babies in around a 75 and within a few to 5 or 6 months they will need to be moved into a 125, time could be a little less or a little longer depending on each individual fish. Thats why its important to be a couple steps ahead. Genetics of the fish parents has a role in size, if the parents were small then you probably will get a nice slow grower but if the parents were 4 1/2 feet long you probably are going to have to move them to a 125 sooner than later because it will probably grow super fast. An inch a week is on the max grow size but you should honestly plan based on that idea. NEVER buy a redtail unless you already have at least a 125 in your arsenal otherwise you will more than likely be caught off guard and not prepared for the monster fish. However with that said theres not a whole lot to worry about when it comes to reds. I think they get way too much negative press, they are not the fastest grower in aquariums. Although they will exceed an arowanas overall length an arowana can grow faster to its max size than a redtail, reaching a foot or more in less time than a redtail can reach the same length. Also arowana are natural jumpers in the wild, its how they eat in some situations shooting out of the water for bugs on tree branches. This makes them extremely bad for dying in home aquariums by either hitting the glass and breaking their spines or busting through the lid and drying out. Reds get big, thats about the only thing you have to plan for besides the fact they can be known for being spooked and sending that armored skull of theirs through your pretty aquarium glass haha all in all just have space, they arent mean, just hungry babies. People mistake hunger for aggression and thats sorta sad and also puts a bad name on reds. They are little water puppies, just like the oscar he just ate lol my plan for my red is to trap minnows and other game fish and keep them in the 75 he is in now as a hospital tank of sorts, feed them medicated food to make sure they are parasite free and then feed them as his main diet with the occasional tilapia fillet and some shrimp to keep it a variety and give him an easy meal once or twice a week. I am absolutely in love with the redtail catfish and as soon as i get my pool pond up and running i will likely get another one and maybe a spotted gar or florida gar, one that stays in the 3 to 4 foot mark and not a gator gar that gets like 7 feet long haha

      Baked Doritos i highly suggest you don’t get one. As bad as it sounds it’s not the best idea in the long run, unless you have massive space, knowledge, time, money, and more it’s really not the best fish, I suggest almost anything that can fit into a 150 gallon tank or smaller, there are so many fish with personality’s and also the fish community may kind of reject you because of the fact you keep a red tail. Not saying you can’t but just think about the future because these guys live pretty long and not many people will take them if you don’t want them
