- A fire-breathing dragon flew above the New Fantasyland area of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on the night of Dec. 5, 2012, during a private grand opening party. The dragon isn't scheduled to make any future appearances, but you never know. Keep an eye to the sky on your next visit.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this should be a annual thing...like they have a dragon that flies around and can do meet-and-greets with guests. It could travel around the park, ( by flying ) and could stop when people wanted to meet it. Anyone with me?

WHEW! I actually for a minute thought that dragons were real, and that we were going to be overrun with them.....until I read the comments and found out it was fake. thank you thank you all who cleared this up, now I don't have to build a bug-out shelter this weekend.....

Dragons and werewolves have always been my favorite creatures even as a child and still to this day as a 27 year old. I love them, this is so cool and would absolutely love to see this in person someday

Dear all the people who say it's fake. No duh!!! FANTASY should have given you the hind. If not that then MAGIC kingdom. It's just one of Disney's little thing they have that is new. Not so little but hey, tinkerbell flats out from the castle there. Disney's focus around was for little kids. Kinda like you are walking past Santa in malls. That's for the kids. Your saying, not real, it's impossible. Yes all the later teens and adults know it's not real. More than anything for those groups is how they made it.

I really want to know how they pulled this off! It looked almost like an animatronic, but I know it wasn’t! They should really bring it back!
It is animatronic. Its hanging from a guy on a paraglider. (A parachute, and the guy has a prop on his back that keeps him in the air.) its a really cool effect, they could do all kinds of characters like that. Ive read dumbo, star wars characters, ect.

As a permanent show,this could bring many people in.This could be the cherry on this FantasySundae.
I'm a 20 year old college student and even though yes, the dragons not real. That still doesn't mean you can't marvel at what went into making this creature seem so real. And I don't know about you, but I kind of don't want to know. It doesn't matter if your a kid or an adult, your allowed to wonder and marvel.
This is why I love Disney.

Notice the parachute when illuminated by the clouds and fire/fireworks coming out. It could possibly be remote controlled or audio-animatronic with the parachute being the only thing keeping it air-bound. Then again it may be a dragon still learning to fly and for its safety it has that parachute. I mean, it is disney!

This flying dragon was a one time only special event the night before the grand-opening of New Fantasyland at Walt Disney World, FL. It was 2 years in the making.
I worked at Walt Disney World in Hollywood Studios so sadly I didn't get to see this spectacular feat of magic and imagineering. 😞At the time it was a really big deal before and after the dragon flew over New Fantasyland.
We thought the flying dragon was going to be a nightly occurence (weather permitting) unfortunately it was not. It was only for media and honored special guests which seems a real shame. Thankfully we have videos of that special night. 😊

Leave it to Disney to take something basic and turn it into.....Magic.

... I would probably cry seeing this and I'm 20. When I was a little girl, yes, I liked unicorns and ponies, but my FAVORITES were the Dragons. I would probably break down crying a little bit if I saw this in person, now. I've always wanted to see a dragon, whether real or fake, flying in the sky that looked "real".
It is supposed to look like fire. I think it looks cool. Especially the way it glitters/glows after the dragon breathes it out. It also looks better from a different angle. If you were looking at the dragon from the side it looks like the "fire" goes straight out of its mouth.
They existed before disney could dream them up.

It's Maleficent, scoping out Prince Eric's and Beast's castle. I mean, let's be real though, she'll never get it. Maybe on Halloween when the villians take over, but it won't be for long. I am stoked for Rapunzel's opening though.
