The director of our band has a trumpet and french horn that he plays, mainly trumpet though. The assistant director has his own sax, and borrows the main director's trumpet sometimes (of course cleaning it before and after).
As a flute player whenever we have chair tests my lips start shaking and it sounds like the worst vibrato ever and then I forget how to do vibrato like a normal person

Bro I remember when I was in beginner band and there was this girl who played the trumpet and whenever she couldn't play the song for the test she would cry
My band teacher vs clarinet section “Guys stop with the squeaks and squabbles our concert is tomorrow and thanksgiving is over we already killed the turkey so stop squeaking”
I’m literally concertmaster for my symphonic band in my high school, I still get the nerves and have issues with anxiety. Always keep in mind that everyone is going over their notes in their heads- worried about their own test and it’s a completely judge free environment (if it’s not. Then shame on them, an orchestra is composed of so many diverse people/students and criticism should only be constructive.) I’ve gotten the shakies during tests, my bow hand shaking so hard it sounded more like a lamb than an actual piece. If you can’t tamper your nerves and anxiety during tests- don’t worry! Ask your teacher to switch to online tests using apps like ‘Flipgrid’ which makes it easier for the teacher to grade while giving you a time and space to record your own videos and play your best! I also find that bonding with my orchestral mates and getting to know them and knowing I’m in a safe environment helps my nerves and makes me feel better about my performance when I mess up! Good luck everyone!
My first playing test was literally so freaking terrifying from my perspective. In 6th grade, I was already enough of a bundle of nerves and social anxiety as it was. I could hardly speak in front of people without nearly fainting! And when I had to play the playing test in front of the whole class (I believe the test was either hot-cross-buns or twinkle twinkle little star?) I completely failed. The worst part was that I knew how to play it really really well but couldn’t get over the nerves with everyone staring at me while I played an instrument I barely knew how to play. Oh! And my nerves got me a one-way ticket to last chair for the whole year... which really beat the crap out of my confidence. Even now, I still haven’t fully gotten over the anxiety but I’m definitely better now than I used to be. I can play in front of people without completely falling apart. Still have to battle with shaking and sweating profusely from the anxiety though lol.
its funny, because the book he did for the trumpet is spot on, and when alot of woodwinds mess something up, when they're not good, they grunt, Good job!
this is so funny to me and these are so entertaining as a band student my self in high school i remember taking these “surprise testes” and it was one of the most nerve recking things cause of me being a introvert but as i got older it just got easier to play the parts required
And here I am. Being deeply depressed that I can't just go to school anymore because I'm too old. Never be able to make my dream come true to be in band. But I'm still watching these vids.
Just signed up to substitute in your district, I’m a former band director and would love to sub in your classroom! A former co-worker shared a few of your videos and when I noticed it was Mishawaka, I thought it’d be so much fun to be in this guys classroom!
The clarinet squeaking reminds me of my first concert. We played hot cross buns and this kid next to me always had a chipped reed and on the second note he squeaked so loudly that he just looked at me then put his clarinet on the ground in the middle of the concert 😂😂
In my band class we don’t have a specific day for scales, we do it on our own and that’s the thing, you join band if your motivated and it’ll show when you complete the scales.
I graduated high school 5 years ago and havent played in a symphonic band since. I have had several nightmares about forgetting playing tests in the last year
I’ll never forget in my beginning band a kid didn’t know how to play and when the first test came around he said “all I see is a bunch of dots on lines!!”
playing tests are the worst your able to play it so good when you practice then when you actually have to do it the pressure gets to you and you don't play it as well as you practiced. Oh the memories..
is it weird that in other school bands saxophones and trumpets are loud but in mine saxophones can barely be heard and it's the trumpets and clarinets that can be heard
