A good year for Waxwings. Waxwings in Yorkshire with the OM-1 and the 150-400mm Lens

- 2023 looks like it is going to be an invasion year for one of our most colourful winter visitors, the Wawing. They usually start off in the north of the U.K. and find their way south. I go half way to met them in Yorkshire.
As ever they spend a lot of time in urban areas where they find the berries they like to feed on.
I use the OM-1 camera with the 150-400mm lens and due to the poor light use 3200 iso.

Waxwings are my favorite species to photograph.
Interesting-looking bird. They look like a cross between a goldfinch and Eurasian Jay.
Great pics, thx
Glad you like them!
Nice birds and nice video. Good luck Mike.!!
Thanks, you too!
Thank you Mike love your vids.
Thank you.
Loved your tripod recovery video - and this one of course!

Another great video mike, nice to meet you yesterday. Fenton
Thanks! You too!
Super, you are a lucky one! Merry Xmas, happy new year, stay healthy and always good light.
Thank you.
More great work Mike!
Thanks.
I lived in Lancashire until I was 25 and I haven't seen a Waxwing at all. Stunning colours.
This is a special year for them.
Flipping waxwings! One of the best years since I started wildlife photography, and not seen a single one! Still, some great shots here. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Mike, yet another outstanding video,by the way I have been following your exploits for 60 years, you are still a master photographer, your knowledge of bird species is beyond criticism and above all you still have boundless enthusiasm, keep going Ben
Great to hear!
Nice👍
Thanks for the visit
i guess it is true that Olympus color science is second to none. really great video Mike.
What a difference a place can make ;-) In Holland everybody was excited to see just 2 Waxwings in a village in the middle of the country.
Great birds to take picture off.
Beautiful showcase of Waxwings!
Many thanks!
Great video Mike, glad my directions got you to the Waxwings
Thanks again!
Lovely birds, lovely video and a lovely watch.
Many thanks
What a beautiful bird and as usual, expertly photographed. Living on the south coast of England, we don’t get to see Waxwings too often. They apparently do come this far south in good years but ive yet to see them myself so this is a treat.
Probably will this year
Lovely as always Mike!
Glad you like it! I was back there on Friday. Dull light again.
Yes Mike I guess the weather does what it does. You get great footage on you're camera.
Thanks Mike for your photographs and video.
You clearly showed the Waxwing to be a very elegant looking bird with perfectly groomed feathers in evey image and all the birds in great condition.
I hope they come down south, plenty of food on the trees near me.
I hope you being the last to leave has payed dividends in the past.
Thanks again.
Many thanks!
Nice to meet you at the industrial estate that day. You have inspired me to try some slow mo video with my G9! Cheers
Looks wonerful in show motion.
Superb photos been to Warrington Today there was a flock of about 30 but the light was very poor hopefully some will be ok
Light is always poor these days.
Delightful. Thanks Mike
Thanks.
I think its going to be a Waxwing winter this year… great shots Mike, lovely video too.
Wow what a large flock, and a amazing pictures of them.
Thank you.
That was beautiful...we had a fantastic flock of bohemian waxwings in Skipton yesterday just by the spring's branch of the Leeds Liverpool canal..coach street bridge... They really are lovely birds... thanks for sharing....kind regards Dave 😁👍👍👍👍👍
Wonderful!
I love the waxwings as well! Great images! Thanks!
Glad you like them!
Fabulous video and photos Mike, thank you for posting 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I love the waxwings. Wonderful photography as always. Especially love the one at 5:32.
Thank you.
Great stuff. I saw some waxwings this fall. Always a joy to see and watch. This year, I have gotten some really nice images of the American Robin feeding on the various berries this fall.
Sounds great!
What you need, is not a big flock of Waxwings, but a small group. About 12 years ago, there was a small group of about 5 Waxwings eating Sorbus berries, on some trees around a car park. They were there from January, to early April.
Thanks for the video Mike, loved the shots and well done for getting that video footage of one on berries 👍🏻 only seen waxwings from a distance here in the East of England but they are about according to the birding sightings. All the best Doug
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for that brilliant video. I just love Bohemian Waxwings. We saw thousands here in Grey County, Ontario this time last year. I hope they come down in big numbers again this year.
Very nice birds
Brilliant lovely birds
Yes indexed
Your usual high standard Mike, Lovely work
Thanks
Superbe
Thank
Mike, two times I have been fortunate enough to discover a flock of cedar waxwings feeding and have them all to myself all morning. Both times they were feeding in mulberry trees so ravenously that they didn't even notice people walking by. One other time I went back to one of those mulberry trees to photograph the waxwings and a huge flock of starlings came in and took over. No pictures that day. But I did take a few of the mulberries for myself.
I had a flock to myself on the estate I work on during the last big influx. Film days then.
hi mike
despite the fact that you thought things were going wrong. You ended up with a bunch of very nice photos, and you didn't have time to do naughty things or pull silly pranks. 😂😂😂😂
I've never seen a Waxwing down here in W Wales. Very insightful and informative video again. Best wishes.
This year you might
Four were caught by ringers on Gower a couple of weeks ago, and they have been seen in North Wales, heading down to Mid Wales. Here's hoping they come in some numbers down to Swansea, which they last did about 2017. Another great video, Mike, of one of my favourite birds!
@@MikeLaneFRPS You were right Mike. Three turned up at a local reserve yesterday and today I got to see and photograph a Waxwing for the first time 👍
Beautiful footage and stills Mike . We get Redwing and Fieldfare down here in the South but the Waxwings take longer to come down the Country. Anyway that is my excuse for never really catching the Waxwing . In theory and in Asda car parks a very common bird, but for me a no show ! I still have no decent shots of the Waxwing ! Thanks for sharing the Masterclass. I will no exactly what to do now if I am ever in the right place at the right time 🙂
Still mostly north side of Birmingham.
I have just picked up my Camper van, thanks to my late Mother. But I won't be going as far as Birmingham just yet. But thanks for the tipoff Mike @@MikeLaneFRPS 👍
Thanks for sharing Mike, still not seen any yet.
Still mostly north of the Midlands
we have had some in Berkhamsted Hertfordshire.
Thanks again for another inspirational video.
I stumbled upon Cedar waxwings here in Maryland USA. They seem to eat the top berries first and work their way down. On day two they ate the berries at eye level. I also have the OM1 and 150-400mm and filmed a pair swapping a berry between each other over several minutes until a 3rd waxwing tried to join in without success. Is this mating behaviour?
I have photographed them swopping berries mid winter, but I do not know why! Courtship, bonding, adult feeding youngster.
Funny how you started off mentioning the weather, Friday 15-12-23 at Fenton for the Waxwings the weather did improve alot in afternoon the Waxwings did make a reappearance with the sunshine also, it was good to meet you and hope you got something from the day when you moved on. 👍🏻
I went back later in the day when the sun shone for a while, but the waxwings only showed as the sun was setting.
@MikeLaneFRPS must have missed you then I went once the sun dipped behind them shops.
Nice video and images. In Holland we have some Waxwings, but not the numbers you are mentioning>
This is a very good year. Usually far less.
Hi Mike excellent Vid as usual, I see you have the extra mount under the lens hood, do you have that for the Video or do you find it helps with the stills too?
Just for video. Vibration in video is a problem
An occurrence of birds in numbers in a location that is unusual is known as an irruption.
Another great video Mike. Would you have the A1 with the 200-600 or the Om-1 with the 150-450?
I sold the Sony A1 and 200 500mm. Made a series of youtube films on it
@@MikeLaneFRPS Yes I've seen a lot of your videos mate. Thanks
What berries are they eating.
Very, very nice footage!
I'm almost 60 but haven't seen this species (in Germany) more than ten times in my life. You need to watch within cities or villages, but I don't like it at all 🙂
Many thanks!
Hi, where is Yorkshire was this? Thanks
An industrial estate about 10 miles north of Scarborough. Look at scarborough birders website, they will be elsewhere now.
Arrived with us at end of October, about 2 to 3 weeks earlier than other years. Flock of over 1000 regular around the houses where I live. Short walk and they were there. Had one flock on a tree separating in two groups, one would come down to Rowan and feed, when they returned the other group came down. This year has been the most plentiful of the birds I have seen. There are still a few around. What I am not seeing if Redwings, they are normally on the go with the Waxwings. Great video and keep up the captures. Merry Xmas when it comes from me here in Elgin , Scotland.
Thank you. I saw pictures of huge flocks at Inverness.
