KTM 1290 Super Adventure R Break in Ride

  • Getting back home to New Zealand and the legends at KTM NZ hooked me up with a shiny new #ktm1290superadventurer with all my power parts swapped over and the bike all ready to go. The swoopy and fast gravel roads from home made a perfect break in ride for skids and slides. You can't beat a V twin LC8 on these roads.

    Clearly you know those roads like the back of your hand. Me, I'd be absolutely sh-tting myself moving a beast that heavy around those corners on a gravel surface at those speeds. The drone footage is superb.

    2:39 - 3:37 Impressed by that corner speed. How much is trusting in the tyres vs reacting within a millisecond with counter body weight to small slips or steering with the throttle?

    • @YSPDJapan
      @YSPDJapan Před rokem +2

      When you counter weight and stand, you don't really have to react that fast. When you have good tires, you can feel them slide but you know how much slide you can give before it lets go. So you simply let off the throttle and it rights itself. Do it enough and you can control the amount of slide you get every turn. But you're hoping the front always stays stuck; sometimes the front slides too.
      Reaction time is like, 1/3 to 1/2 a second to decide to keep adding throttle, let off, or just maintain. But again, it's all controlled and you choose to do it, it doesn't come as a surprise.
      I'm not Birch but I ride a Super Tenere like this as well and that's my take on it.

    • @CurtisBrandt
      @CurtisBrandt Před 3 měsíci

      @@YSPDJapan Agreed. It's not about reacting down to the millisecond. If a person watches Birch's tutorials* on cornering and body position, then see what he's doing from the drone shots, he's riding in such a way that, if/when the bike slips, he's just going to stay balanced over the top of it until it regains traction. The other, seemingly strange thing about this kind of riding is that you almost never lose the front, and the rear end slides are not a surprise - they're initiated by the rider. So while it looks risky and tenuous, it's actually relatively repeatable, consistent, and safe.
      *Adam Riemann's presentations on cornering involve different terminology but arrive at similar results - the front is very trustworthy when cornering in this manner.

    Hopefully they made some changes to the crash bars. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that they seem mostly cosmetic compared to the bars on the older 1090/1190/1290.

      @stevebutton3367 Před rokem

      Mine work well

    • @williamb.6918
      @williamb.6918 Před rokem

      Watch for slipping on the left side in particular. Unlike the bars on the older models which were attached to the frame in two places the newer model is attached in one. I talked to a guy that had a zero mph drop on to mud which did enough damage to the bar that it actually buckled after it slipped down (once they move they are no longer braced properly). I had a similar situation on a 3 MPH drop, but the bar was not damaged and I was able to loosen it and whack it back in place. The last drop (sub 10 mph on trail) actually did almost 4K in damage when the left crash bar buckled after sliding down and then pushed the forward section into the skid plate which pushed into the left tank and radiator in addition to smashing in the large tank cover bodywork (my 1090R had been down at triple the speed on both sides more than once with nothing more than a mirror or lever damaged). If the crash bar actually stayed put like the older revisions none of this would have happened.

      In South Africa we also ride on the left; a friend had a head-on collision with a Swiss tourist who was driving on the wrong side of the road in a hire car; the car hire insurance repudiated the claim stating that the law was broken by them driving on the wrong side of the road. My friend's bike is a write off and he has no claim, even though he was an innocent victim of an unintentional error the other driver made. Fortunately no serious injuries.
