  • Originally filmed for UCLA: NEXT, a project of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, Television, and Digital Media, this portion of the completed project deals with the Belmont Tunnel and the work by community activists to save the tunnel from being destroyed and gentrified by apartment developers in 2004. This film focuses on the historical significance of the yard and the important legacy of the yard for local graffiti artists, while also focusing on the Mexican immigrants and their descendants who played a little-known game called Tarasca on the field in the yard.

I was too young to have experienced the Belmont tunnels unfortunately
This was during my preschool/ elementary days
Its a shame ill never be able to step foot in legendary spots such as the Belmont tunnel, motor yard, old la river, etc
But at least i could always experience these through film

I truly think this was unnecessary that shows you the respect of Art movements. They could’ve built around it n kept the space as an Art park. They also destroyed L.A. transportation history too the original L.A. Charles cars used to run through there. So 21 years of Graff Mural excellence stopped. That was one of the original historical public Graff Art locations in L.A. They even dismantled the Original Venice Beach pavilion walls. They chopped them down now all we have is tiny walls. I’ve painted at these two historic locations such a sad thing. Seems like people don’t care about hip-hop culture they just want to make money off it but not put money into it. Who really cares about the arts??? Where are the philanthropist for Art???
