Beyond the UK, Belgium is Europe’s other historic ale-brewing nation. In this introductory film, Tim Webb, author of eight editions of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide Belgium, introduces its complex beer culture by sampling eight classic beer types and a couple of local bar snacks, at the Dr Beer café and beer shop in Antwerp. Belgium’s 300 to 400 small, independent breweries make over 2000 regular beers in upward of 100 distinctly different styles, many unique to the country. With hundreds of individually owned, specialist beer cafés and almost as many dedicated beer stores, great gastronomy, and cultural quirks around every corner, Belgium is Europe’s top destination for adventurous beer tourism.

Probably the most intelligent beer review I've seen since the days of Michael "I don't sing, and I don't drink Pepsi" Jackson.

  • @minkorrh

Careful folks. My introduction cost me $22 CDN for a 330ml bottle of Wesvleteren (sp?) and its been an alcoholic spiral since then Lol.

  • @DidYaServe

My beer buying philosophy is German day-to-day, Belgian if looking for something special and regret that Grodziskie no longer exists.

La Chouffe is not produced in Antwerp (Vlanderen, north of Belgium) but in Achouffe (Gaume, south of Belgium)

  • @danytalloen

There is ONE trappist beer that is NOT sold commercially, and you wouldn't have been able to have it served to you (legally) where the video is shot ; and that is West-Vleteren, you can only order it on their webside (that's rather new feature, you had to phone them to order it till last year or so), and then... hold on you have to make an appointement AND give them your licenseplate number and actually DRIVE to the monastery to get your maximum of two crates of the very best beer in the world... and of course... Antwerp is NOT the place you want to visit to taste beer without a bias...

Fun fact: The first beer, the Stouterik, translates to English as 'Noughty Boy' ;-)

This should more accurately be called 'Introduction to Flemish Beer'...

  • @isaaccooper4083

I would love to see a version of this video where he has to finish the beer before moving on to the next and just gets drunker and drunker throughout the video, having started with an empty stomach

  • @oilwings

Disliked! The intro is way too long!

It played fine for me. A temporary glitch hopefully.

A beautiful ouverture into the world of Belgian beer. I've visited 't Verzet not too long ago. The owners are guys who did indeed start out in college with a very modest operation. They are absolutely nuts about making beer, of which they make quite a variety. They did not want to partner with a big brewery because they want to do what they like without anyone calling the shots on them. They are everything that's good about Belgian beer culture. They are interested only and exclusively in making the best beer they can. It's great to see them talk about their beers, it's even better to drink some of their beers. Some of which are amazing, some of which are.... ah... more of a challenge 🙂. 't Verzet: I freaking love you, guys!

Well done Tim! Like everything you do, it's fantastic!

Fantastic video! In 2019 I did a bicycle trip in Belgium with a friend. We focused on Trappist breweries but of course drank many types of beer. I can't wait to return! By the way, bicycling was an amazing way to see Belgium.

I have never been able to drink beer or wine until I had a lambic. I was able to have 3 full shotglasses of it and it was so delicious. I am so happy to find something I can drink and that tastes so good.
