- wasn't expecting to see a calf for at least a couple of weeks but one of the heifers had slipped early and had a premature one.
If I'm milking one I might as well be milking 10

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

Great video, I suggest you put the empty heifer in with the calved one 😉
Good idea!
We've had 2 heifers calve so far, put a couple of cows in with them who haven't calved, makes milking them a lot easier
That would make it far easier 👌
Yip same
Never seen a heffer first milking before 😊 everyday is a school day.😊
Great video, as usual. Pity about the calf, but it goes with the job, unfortunately. Couldn't believe the cost of that part, ridiculous, and let's hope that rain stops as it can get you down. Anyway, at least you have the warmer weather in a month or two to look forward to. Good luck with the calving, and let's hope that bloody rain stops.
Unfortunately we got another 15mm over night which hasn’t helped, but can’t do much about the weather 🤷
That's a pity her calving so early nice looking heifer too
Earliest one I had was a month early big problem I had was calf was tiny but alive and she had no milk at all so I had no colostrum at all to give her luckily a friend of mine at young farmers had started calving so I got some colostrum off her then I hand reared it for a couple of months
I always pull a second cow or calf to be a pen mate. If you pulled another heifer you could run her thru the routine except for the actual milking. Wish we had your extra rain.
To bad the calf didn't make it all the way to the herd, but very impressive how well she did for the first time milking, wish they all would be that calm.
Might be worth freezing the colostrum, great video couldn’t stop looking at your beard though lol x
Wow mate that is one beautiful quiet heifer wouldnt it be nice if they were all like that 👍
Would make it soo easy!
Great video like always. One time one of my auntie's cows had calved 6 weeks after every one else.
Some of those parts prices are just disgusting.
A friend of mine measures the rain and last season we had 4016mls. much higher than normal
Jeez that'd be easily double your annual surely??
@@TheOnceADayFarmer yep easy
It's insane huh! Your area of town has been hammered!
I'd eat those highland cattle! Much better as burger than a pet.
Longer video so happy about this
hi on your bait station for the rats add a bit of peanut butter to it
Or burnt peanut butter
It’s a shame you can’t freeze the colostrum for the upcoming calf’s but it wouldn’t be feasible to I suppose.
Yep you can do that, I just don’t tend to.
Hi i like your video
Nice one.
Over here in the netherlands we have a severe drought on our hands after a very good first cutting of grass it whent bone dry.. .cows have little to graze and baleprices skyrocket up to 100€ per bale..milkprice is really down over here . How is the prognose of the milkprice in NZ these days?
I feel for ya, that sucks and makes it hard.
Our milk price isn’t looking to flash and farm expenses are still high so not looking good either 🤦♂️
Have you a neighbour who is milking that you can give her to for a couple of weeks until you start calving. The same thing happened me here in Ireland last December so my good neighbour took her for a month.
Possibly, everyone’s a bit pushed for grass so not sure if they would want extras 😅
@@TheOnceADayFarmer you could take a dry cow back from him
Stitching and rolling
Hey Andrew how you
Do you still have to do wash through since she only in the bucket
Nah nothings going through the milk lines so just wash the cups and test bucket 👍
Where is the calf
It died so I buried it
Do you supply milk to Fonterra?
Yes we do
Any idea why she calved early. ?
Maybe the weather 🤷
How long can you store colostrum?
Fresh, maybe a couple of days but the longer you leave it the lower quality it gets.
You can freeze it how ever which keeps it good.
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Thanks for the reply
Why not run that empty one, in with her.
Good idea
Was the ash coal ash ?
Yep pretty sure it was 👍
Just seems like you just put your cows out to go dry.
haha feels that way too
Grab one of your empty or aborted cows to put in with her during milking or even another pregnant cow. Should help keep her calm and in place properly.
get another pair of taggers mate those ones are useless only good for calves
Yeah I’ve gone back to using my old ones 😅
@@TheOnceADayFarmerYeah nice mate, my old pair broke and i was tagging tried to use those pin fell out everytime😅
