    What a great job that Michael Dunlop did on this special lap. I am a Manxie and was one of the lucky ones to see it.

    The capturing of a memorable moment, for sure. The vantage of the camera and the wait for Dunlop and the Benelli to reappear allows us time to reflect on another age of racing - "dustbin fairings" and exotic multis when they were mixed up with Manx Nortons, Matchless and AJS singles. I don't think the romance and nostalgia is going to leave us soon ... anymore than what the sounds of Merlin powered Spitfires and Hurricanes provoke in so many people.
    The reason is subtle: to use a misused and over-used word, the machines of yesteryear are just more "organic". By that, I mean many of us common folk can understand and have a feel for them that just is not the same with the space age metallurgy and electronics that have made motorcycles so much more mysterious. Back in the day, you could tell what machine was passing just by the sound alone. A race day was a symphony. The lap times of the modern IOM are incomprehensible. Well Mr McIntyre's feat was too - really. Hard to explain. Perhaps I'm just getting old :)))

      I agree entirely. I find the old machines far more interesting and varied than the modern bikes, but then I AM old. I can remember from 50 and more years ago the Thruxton 500 mile races, vintage motorcycle races with Vincents, Rudges, Velocettes, Scotts and many more being thrashed around the track, and standing under the corrugated iron roof of the grandstand at Poole Speedway as four JAP-engined bikes blasted past on open exhausts. No silencers in those days!

    Funny how those old four cylinder bikes sound so different to modern ones.

    The Dunlop K81 TT100 tyre was named after a 500 Triumph twin did the first production 100mph lap.

    • @johndavis334
      @johndavis334 Před 6 měsíci

      The tyre was renamed "TT100" because it was the first production tyre to reach a lap speed of 100 mph over the Isle of Man TT race course when Malcolm Uphill rode his works Thruxton Bonneville 650cc to victory in 1969 with a fastest lap of 100.37 mph during the 750 cc class production race.

      Malcolm Uphill only had a Dunlop K81 on the rear rim of the Triumph. He had the regular Dunlop road racing tire on the front rim, however. Which shows the K81 made a better rear tire than a front.
