It was not an illegal move. Every pawn on its starting square can either move up once or twice if there is nothing preventing it from doing so.

You say you want everybody to play and enjoy chess but then you go and exclude most people by not explaining how this was a mate. The average person sees 3 spots the king can safely go to. So how was this a mate? when you don't explain it and take it for granted you EXCLUDE people and push them away from the world of chess. It's like saying: "you don't belong in our club".
