Touring Costa Rica by car is a great way to visit the different regions and ecosystems of this beautiful country. In San Jose, the Costa Rican capital, we make sure to visit the Arts Square ( Plaza de las Artes ) and the Central Market ( Mercado Central ). We soon leave the city and drive to Puntarenas region, located on the central Pacific coast. In the north of Puntarenas, we reach Monteverde, a region with lots of sightseeing options.
We opt for a trail at the Valle Escondido Nature Reserve where we meet our first petrospheres and giant ficus trees. We also book a tour with El Trapiche, to learn about coffee and cacao (chocolate). We drive North and in the province of Guanacaste, we reach the area of the Miravalles Volcano, with total height of 6654 feet (2028 metres). A great climb but make sure to book your baquiano (guide) - we strongly recommend Freddy Soto. Before climbing, have a sturdy meal: you can have an American breakfast, but why not try the typical Spotted Rooster ( Gallo Pinto ) breakfast?
In the vicinity of Miravalles Volcano, don’t miss the Thermal Springs at Las Hornillas, and the unmissable Mud Bath: just do it. You can also participate in a horseback-riding excursion in that region.
Leaving Guanacaste, we drive through Alajuela, the second most populated city in Costa Rica, capital of the eponymous province, to reach the Guayabo National Monument, an archeological site in the province of Cartago. In fields along the way, cows and cattle egrets live in symbiosis. We cannot resist a slice of watermelon. We stop by a local weaver and are amazed by the style and quality of his work. Stop by and treat yourself to at least 2 baskets !
Circling San Jose clockwise, we return to Puntarenas on the Pacific coast for our next stop in Uvita, known for its whale tail beach. We jump into the Uvita falls (catarata), in the middle of the jungle, for a refreshing afternoon.
Next day is snorkeling day. After a sea tour commencing in Sierpe, we reach the coast of Cano Island (Isla del Cano) where we jump of the boat with our gear, after which we relax on one of the many beaches of the Cano Island Biological Reserve. On our way back, we meander down the Sierpe River enjoying views of Costa Rica’s largest mangrove forests and its varied fauna.
Before reaching our last destination, the Manuel Antonio National Park, we stop by Playa Dominicalito, in Dominical. in the colourful beach market, we cannot decide between 2 beach sheets and buy both, along with lots of small souvenirs.
About half-hour away from our accommodation at the Manuel Antonio National Park, we book a spice tour at Villa Vanilla, a small local spice farm, where we learn about not only vanilla, but also cinnamon, and many other exotic fruits and medicinal plants, along the Epiphyte Trail.
We stop at Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas where surfers attend nearby international surfing competitions.
All good things come to an end, we are back in San Jose, catching our flight from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). Bye-Bye Costa Rica!

(SJO). Au revoir le Costa Rica !
