Miyoshi Umeki could sing English songs without a trace of an accent. In the FDS, she sang in character as a new immigrant. After her role as Mrs. Livingston in the Courtship of Eddie's Father, she retired from show business. Finding that her early successes in Sayonara and FDS could not be repeated. In 2007, she passed away from cancer, at the age of 78, in Missouri where her son lived.

She was so pretty and so talented ! She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the late 50's film "Sayonara". And later in the late 60s she played a housekeeper in the ABC sitcom "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", opposite Bill Bixby.

Gotta love R&H. excellent songs and stories that convey a social message. FDS was about immigration and assimilation, "South Pacific" tackled racism, "Carousel" about domestic violence, "Sound of Music" was about resisting Nazism.

If Oscar Hammerstein knew Chinese culture, then 10000 would be a very large number and the title of this song would be Ten-Thousand Miracles. This scene takes place at St. Mary's Square in San Francisco, between Pine and California Streets, east of Grant Avenue. The statue is a stainless steel creation of Benny Bufano of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Despite the passing of 54 years, everything is still there if you visit San Francisco.

They raised me the best actors in the movie business 👍

For 10 years, from 1980-90, I worked right across Pine St. from St. Mary's Square and ate my lunch under the Sun Yat Sen statue pictured above many times. I got to pay that back on Oct. 17,1989, when I was personally responsible for keeping Long-distance and emergency communications working OUT of San Francisco during the Loma Prieta Quake. I've wandered the streets and alleys of Chinatown many times over the years.

When I first watched this film on TV in the '60s, I was surprised and a bit annoyed when the onlookers suddenly all chimed in "Very wet!" at 3:53. Up till then it had been a quasi-realistic setting in a city, with passers-by gathering to watch an impromptu street performance. Suddenly the artifice was glaringly shown.

Smart comment. A lot of the great Rodgers and Hammerstein songs are alike. This is ludicrous. It tells us that two immigrants from China, just off the boat, are suddenly able to not only speak perfect English but sing elaborate lyrics as well. On the stage this worked, here, on the screen it's embarrassing. On the stage you never questioned how silly this is because in a theater you have an entirely different response to fantasy. On film, all of it is magnified. So what was charming is suddenly absurd.
