      Arlott was different. He was pure commentator. He recounted and embellished, taking it to a higher level. In that Arlott was the greatest commentator that entertained. Richie was an anchor as well. So more rounded but as a recounter of what is taking on the pitch at the time, Arlott has no equal.

    I used to watch BBC cricket with Richie Benaud and Jim Laker as commentators. They knew when to talk and when to be quiet and let the action speak for itself. Now commentators feel they have to prattle on all the time and talk crap.

      It's a sign of the times really with how self-centred people have become, I guess. Used to love watching snooker with Ted Lowe or Jack Karnehm, now it's almost unwatchable with any commentator you like filling up airtime with their thoughts. These channels get paid a lot, why don't they give us a commentator-free option?

    Yeah that makes sense, i saw that happen and it was Greg Chappel who told his brother i think it was from memory to bowl a grubber, right along the pitch because they needed 6 to win. It was a pretty piss poor performance. I'm an Aussie but i still didn't want to win like that. He could've bowled something that couldn't have been hit for 6, but thats the risk you must take. Bowling under arm was low and weak

    What really strikes me as vexing is that Trevor had managed to take the wickets of Richard Hadlee and Ian Smith - the last two players who could bat properly - in the same over. This, combined with the fact that the no. 10 batsman wasn't likely to have belted a six, is why I blame Greg entirely for causing the incident - he ripped out Trevor's spine on live TV and killed his brother's career.

    • @stevieb7237
      @stevieb7237 Před 9 lety +2

      He got Hadlee from an absolute shocking decision. Then there's Snedden taking a clear catch off G Chappell earlier in the match. I can't believe how composed NZ were given they were only 6 runs away and cheated several times in the same match. NZ would have won easily without all the cheating occurring by the Australian captain and umpires. The underarm was irrelevant, but the icing on the cake. NZ had been shafted well before that. And it happened time and time again during the 80s (and in 2001/02 when umpires prevented Australia losing that series). Dyer, and Dick French. Joke.

    • @peripheraldevotee94
      @peripheraldevotee94 Před 9 lety +1

      Hadlee's dismissal wasn't a good decision, granted, but the point still remains - Greg was stupid enough to believe that the no. 10 batsman would've hoicked a six in one shot, and had no faith in his brothers bowling ability at all. Trevor had removed the last two players who could have belted the last six, and had his career murdered by Greg on live television.
