Oh what bliss! To listen to two such beautifully spoken ladies. Really helpful video and I shall be buying a William Morris cushion kit. They are much larger than I thought and being able to buy the cushion backing sold it to me. Thank you both.

I always use tent stitch - let me try and help!
If you’re finishing a row on the right hand side, then make your last stitch, and then bring your needle up into the bottom hole of the row above, immediately above your last stitch on the row below.
Going the other way (I work on a frame and don’t tend to turn my work each row), bring your needle through from the back up one vertical stitch, into the next row above, to start working left to right again. It’s easier to do it than write it out, trust me!

Does one have to work only with wool thread when making a needlepoint rug? I am allergic to wool and was wondering if working with Pearl Cotton would be ok. I have been trying to find a site to teach a beginner how to start a needlepoint tapestry rug but all I keep getting is latch hooks video or instructions. I am somewhat familiar with needlepoint work. Thank you.

I had wrote a quick blurp in my sci-fi novel about a tapestry. My concept of tapestry is much larger than the pillows you present; I'm thinking wall hangers. While my blurp isn't a large portion of the story, could you tell me if it's within reason. Keep in mind, it's a futuristic setting, and the home of a well-born wealthy woman; the character presented is not related, and is idly snooping around the library late at night.
    ----------------
She looked away, and her vision was filled by a tapestry in progress. Most of it was a canvas filled with sketch marks. A nearby table was filled with various needles and threads. A picture lay on a sheet of notes, which were scratched many times, with few circles; she looked at the picture and was taken aback when she saw herself, and the notes were of colors for her features. Looking up at the descending angel sketch again, the picture slipped from her fingers.

What this video shows is not tapestry, it's a form of embroidery called needlepoint. Tapestry is a type of fabric created on a loom, with designs woven directly into it, not sewn onto a canvas. You're right that historical tapestries could be very large and were often designed to cover walls. The invention of wallpaper largely superseded wall tapestries, which were enormously expensive and labour-intensive creations. Because needlepoint gives an effect similar to tapestry the term has come to be used as if they are the same thing. They're not: tapestry is woven and needlepoint is sewn.

      Ok, how bout this...
      --------
She looked away, and her vision was filled by a tapestry in progress. A canvas filled of sketch marks, shrouded by vertical threads from ceiling to floor, wider than she could stretch her arms. The bottom had been started, and the floor was littered with thread spools. A nearby table was filled with big wooden needles and threads.
A picture lay on a sheet of notes, which were scratched many times, with few circles. She looked at the picture and was taken aback when she saw herself, and the notes were of colors for her features. Looking up at the diving angel sketch again. The picture slipped from her fingers.

@@saritshull3909 Well I'm in the UK and I use the term needlepoint - the correct name for the technique. Using the term tapestry for needlepoint is a bad habit that muddies the waters and frustrates the practitioners of tapestry (a much more specialised craft) no end. Keep off the tapissers' grass! 😆

Beautiful kits by Bothy, however, they are not Tapestry! They are Needlepoint kits. Tapestry is woven on a loom.

Well said! Why do people insist on calling this tapestry… it is needlepoint! Tapestry and needlepoint are two completely different things. Lovely designs though … but please don’t mislead 🙂

In Britain, needlepoint on a painted or printed canvas, is called “tapestry”, after the woven tapestries which inspired it.

this is needlepoint not "tapestry". tapestry is worked on a loom and is completely different.
