The change from when I was playing is most of these are so sneaky, we just got stuck in and every game would have a few punch ups but cheap shots were rare because everyone knew retribution would be swift and savage. Self refereeing was much more effective than the limp wristed pap we see now.

i dont watch a lot of rugby, when they're handing out red and yellow cards there seems to always be 2 players, is 1 the captain of the team and 1 the offending player?

It's one, or both team Captains, the ref and the offending player, or players. They also have replay refs and a side judges on opposite sides of the field.

What does a "red card" do?
It sends the offending player off for the rest of the game without a replacement. So the offending team now has to play the rest of the game 14 vs 15.

Because the worldwide audience of rugby is very small that doesn't mean that everyone is watching and knows those clips.

The red card for France against Scotland was a scandal. Maybe a yellow for a punch in that situation, but not a red.

I remember being at that game and there was a bit of niggle early on, but that was the only incident which boiled over, can’t throw a punch and not get sent off.
Not a scandal at all, Haouas deserved the red card.

As a dude who has played american football and lacrosse my whole life- rugby is the toughest sport in the world.
This is played at club and international level. The top side in the world at present is South Africa. They are a seriously physical side.
What you're seeing are extremes .
A lot of tackles are not legal within the sport .
It could result in catastrophic injuries.
The player committing the offence could end up being red carded and miss the entire game, not to mention being cited and fined and banned from several matches.
