Every house has a mystery switch. We had 2- the one in the small bedroom, and the one by the front door. The one in the bedroom was supposed to control an outlet, but the outlet had never been installed, leaving only a box and stripped wires in the wall behind the sheetrock. 😮 Quick work with a saw revealed the incomplete installation of the outlet. An outlet was added, sheetrock dust swept up, switched power achieved.
The front door mystery was solved while mowing the lawn. The mower hit something near the sidewalk. Oops, now there is half of an outlet lying in the grass! New outlet installed, small lamp installed by bottom of driveway. Success, now the switch by the front door actually controls something. That lasted for a happy few days until someone ran over the new lamp while backing out. Subsequent attempts to remedy the situation have failed. Wire at end of driveway is different than wire in switch panel, no way to tell where the connection was made.

There's still a mystery switch in the dining room here. I haven't felt like investigating it though.
