Adam meets James Callahan, a talented but alcoholic who is artist married to a beautiful Piute Indian woman. McDermott has been buying Callahan's paintings in exchange for meager provisions for the impoverished Piute. Adam encourages Callahan, his wife, and a sympathetic saloonkeeper, to develop a plan to let President Lincoln know of the plight of the Piute. McDermott learns of the plan and a confrontation is inevitable." Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"Pernell Roberts is sent on a mission to retrieve some strayed cattle and goes to the small town of Sheephead where the local town boss keeps everyone under his thumb including a small tribe of Piute Indians. Morgan Woodward is said boss and he's a real piece of work, a real Snidely Whiplash type of racist when it comes to the Piutes.
The Piutes have one friend among the whites Philip Abbott who is a talented but dissolute painter in the Fredric Remington tradition. He trades his paintings for just enough food to keep the tribe from starving. But Woodward's got lascivious eyes for Donna Martell, the Piute girl that Abbott married.
The offer Adam Cartwright brings is half the cattle if the Piutes will drive the rest back to the Ponderosa. But that's going to interfere in Woodward's nefarious schemes.
Abbott plays a fine part as a talented artist dissipated by drink as if that's not familiar in literature and in real life. Woodward is a most hateful villain in this fine Bonanza story." Wrritten by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

That intro makes the entire episode for me. Adam slowly realizing what he's in for at 2:28 is hilarious! 😆
The first scene is so funny, one of my favourite scenes, absolutely love it.... How could they let Adam leave the show, he was such an important part of it. Never was the same without him. Love him, so staunch so cool....💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I read that he wanted to spread out to other forms of acting but he wanted to keep his place in the show active to do the occasional episodes..which was kind of natural..but the people running the show refused.
@@merseybeat1963 That really is too bad, Pernell is such a great character in this show. The show lost its spunk after his leaving.
I was watching Bonanza when it was new. I fell in LOVE with Pernell Roberts back when I was a kids. Pernell was hot before being hot was cool.
@@merseybeat1963 he actually hated the show but I heard a rumor that he said he would have stay on not full time if they had let him get married he Said he thought a man in his 30s should be married with a family of his own so to me the writers and directors could have broken the rule about cartwright curse and let him get married true some fans may have not liked it but at least he may have stayed on.
My favorite part about it is that Ben intervened on Adam's behalf at first but then Adam pulled the fast one on Hoss so when Hoss pulled his trick, Ben just let it play out this time.
I love this show and I love all the cartwrights.... but my heart belongs to Adam!! How could any guy be so cool and yet, so HOT????
I met him once..around the time of his other TV series in Manhattan in dads Deli in the 1980's, he was a very nice deep person.
@@merseybeat1963 you want it
He's Mine .... Ladies He's Mine 😂
I have always liked him better then Michael Landon after he left I stop watching I watched some if they looked interesting maybe like 3 to 5 episodes but I really only watched for Adam out of the brothers Adam was my favorite then Hoss Joe got on my nerves with his I am going to marry her every time he had a new girlfriend
Hear hear - my sentiments too, I am 72 now and I fell in love with Adam as a child. My younger sister loved Little Joe!
I just loved it when the Cartwrights showed up.
You don't see Hoss and Joe ganging up on Adam a lot. That scene is hilarious.
"Hard feelings." 😂
I used to watch Bonanza every week, and it's great it is now on CZcams. I am watching all the episodes in sequence. All of the characters are very unique, and Adam has begun to grow on me. Such an excellent actor, and I do like Adam's demeanour. It's a shame he left the show, as I thought they all worked very well together. Thank you so much for uploading these episodes for us to enjoy. Greetings from Hong Kong.
Another GREAT episode I've watched at least a dozen times.
BONANZA now is like the HONEYMOONERS for me.
Can watch the same episodes over and over...
Fantastic Episode.Loss of such a wife was terrible.
Thanks for watching! We also recommend this movie: czcams.com/video/nTTOMkRzhh4/video.html
I love the first scene 🤣 I wish we could have seen the boys when they were younger. Sure, we see little Adam and baby Hoss. But, when they were little and to see how Ben was with them would have been amazing.
I so agree. I think the writers missed a trick not making more episodes of the boys growing up.
There should of been an episode where the ponderosa was being built and Marie should of gotten another episode where her death was shown.
The only thing I didn't like about the flash back ones was the guy who played Ben also played young Ben with dye hair but he still looked to old to have a 5 or 6 year old and a new born so to me on the episode where Adam was born Michael Landon should have played young Ben then on the one when he met Hoss's mom and the one when he was born Pernell Robert's should have played young Ben that's my opinion
The actor playing Ben could easily look younger, I wish they had made more throwback episodes with the boys as kids or teens.
Watched these shows as a kid...forgot most of them and of course did not see all of them...but...this one I see for the first time and damn if this wasn't a great episode! I missed a lot by not seeing them all and today's generation is missing a lot if they don't see them, now...
Thanks for posting
The only way in and out of the Ponderosa is the secret path behind the barn.😊. Poor Cartwright family; all that land and no money to buy a new set of cloths.😊 Still one of the best TV shows ever. Since it is a period piece (1860s-70s American West), in never looks out of time and place.
Thanks for watching! We also recommend this movie: czcams.com/video/rZxSe5AvFkQ/video.html
@@GrjngoWesternSeries I remember this old western series. Gene Autry, Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid and many others.
They also use the same sets for places off of the Ponderosa.
Adam almost got lynched at those trees behind him at 0:32 in the episode when an escaped con steals his clothes.
Bonanza wasn't the only show where all the characters always wore the same clothes. Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, STAR TREK, Land of the Lost, Dukes of Hazzard, and many more.
@@SunRabbit Yes. Strange how on a deserted island the castaways clothes always looked fresh and clean. An no wear and tear after years in the jungle.
I love me some Adam 😍 Also I noticed at the 2:50 or 2:51 minute mark that's Hoss's body double. He's not as big, and he's shorter than Hoss. There's no way Adam could pull Hoss down like that just by yanking on his collar.
Pulling him gently by his collar was silly, as was the whole scene but good enough for light entertainment. I didn't notice the body double but on replay it is obvious.
Omg I've waited for this episode thank you so much this family sure taught me so much Bonanza forever the greatest show ever thank you again i look forward to the next episode please have Adam in it.

Adam 👍👌
A very well written episode highlighting the needless hatred between the White people and the native Indians. Many thanks for sharing it.
When the rest of the Cartwrights pulled up I was like "LET'S GOOOOOOO!"
Thanks for posting look forward to seeing a new episode every day 😉
Our pleasure! Thanks for tuning in! 🤠👌🍿🎬
Yes, another great episode with the antagonist as a thief a liar, and murderer, and then doing the final draw by getting the evidence against him, his real back up arrives at the last minute his family and alls well that ends well. Lovely action, common sense common good, and a family helping people in need, love Bonanza. And of the Cartwrights. Funny how the tuff guy thought he had all the aces on his side, then the odds suddenly changed and he became rather unraveled.

Now we know Little Joe is quicker than his father and Hoss on the draw! 😀
Oh yes. My Little Joe was really fast!!!
wish some of these episodes were longer
Love the start!

Good ol’ Punk Anderson from Dallas. Love that show. Am I the only one.
😂😂😂😂 A swear Pa's the best LOL the boy's 😂😂😂😂, I would have Loved to see the get pa in that water too😂😂😂 wonder how that would have turned out 😂😂😂 such a lovely family. Pa did a great job with those boys. ♥️♥️♥️
Pa Ben. The wonderful man who raised three wonderful Cartwright boys!!!
It reminds me what the Goulding made for Navajos. When the starvation decimated the people, they gone to Hollywood to invite Ford to come and see the place, proposed to work with real Indians in his movie. And they save Navojos like this from starvation
this has to be the only show that the wagon wheels get greased in about every episode. it showed that mundane work had to be down
on the ranch.
Precisaria ter legenda.Eu não entendo inglês. Mas vejo porque gosto da série Bonanza com os quatro Cartwright
Gosto muito de BONANZA!
I LIKE VERY MUCH!
A big mouth bartender and a drank.
Same people then like today.
After people died because of them they want to be heroes.
Thank you so much, Grjingo. Season 5 was an especially good one.
THX U ❗
Did you notice the painting in the saloon had a rip from a bullet one instance and then there was no damage when the bad guys left the saloon.
Yes I did I was getting ready to write about it but you beat me to it. I guess I am not the only one that pays great details while I am watching.
Scenes in a film are not filmed in sequence as the story shows, that is how these discrepancies happen. But why nitpick over details, follow the dialogue that is the story.
Thx i like Bonanza
Glad to hear that! Thanks for tuning in! 🤠👌🍿🎬
Why hoss and littlejoe like to do adam wicked ness he so nice 💖
They were working hard while adam was given easy tasks, kind of like me and my cousins.
All in the name of brotherly love and fun.
Sibling rivalry
I love when Adam's butt gets dirty 😂 thank God for all black outfit.
Episode would of been so much shorter if Adam would of just went and bought the ticket himself.
Thanks for the daily upload 👍
What would be the point? The painter had to make decisions in his life which way he was going. I wouldn’t help him if someone else did is thinking for him.
Toy soldiers are those men who support and are fear of Mcdermott ..
Tay Garnett directed the 1946 noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice, with John Garfield and Lana Turner. He went on to direct six more episodes of Bonanza. Phillip Abbott was an established character actor whose career spanned five decades. Abbott’s greatest success was a starring role in The FBI (241 episodes).
That's more like the bonanza i know.

A great episode, I enjoyed it very much.
When the older brother rides in on his horse, he gets off and if you watch his head area, steam is coming off his head and hat. This happens in the first minute of the show. Must have been really hot that day of filming.
Why do people think drinking coffee sobers up a drunk? It doesn't.
Have you been drunk? It might work for some. Don’t judge all alike.
You get pretty Sleepy when you're drunk so I suppose it's to wake up with the coffeine from coffee, not sure it actually works.
Alex Marshall from Days of Our Lives!
I watched this episode today after watching a 1st season episode of The Big Valley, and was one of the better ones, and with a prominent role of Jarrod Barkley, yessir
The guy playing McDermott looks like a real Indian himself.
That actor is Morgan Woodward - a very good actor in many westerns. The rugged look of his face comes from acne scars as a young man before there was medication for it.
Amo o Adam Cartwright 💔💔.

Ahhh just look at all these old time tv shows like Bonanza what a time to be bought up in ... today its like a well of chaos and shet ....

It’s a pity they couldn’t let native Americans play native Americans.
Is it that they couldn't or they wouldn't? I wonder how many Native Americans were actors when the series was made.
@@user-pd7il3xz5j There were probably plenty who wanted to be, but they weren’t welcome. My guess is companies didn’t even bother looking for any, let alone auditioning any.
@@radic888 I Googled Native American actors during the 1960's...and I didn't come up with much. It's important to try to research before we come up with our biases. I know there is a lot of misinformation out there, but we should still try to get to the truth. That's the way the Cartwrights handled matters.😉😁
@@user-pd7il3xz5j My point is, the reason why there weren’t many is because they probably weren’t encouraged, or expected to be hired, let alone auditioned. Are you trying to say that in the 1950s there weren’t native Americans who dreamed, or wanted, or had the talent to be an actor?
@@radic888 I'm not saying what happened, because when I tried to quickly research it, I couldn't find too much info. I'd like to know though because it's an interesting question. I do know Pernell Roberts felt that ethnic people should have acted the ethnic parts. All my research lead to was names, no dates, and a lot of photos of beautiful Native American actors.
I'm a drunkard myself, but I never let that little detail get in the way of my success.

He didn't stay for his pretty wife's funeral. What was that actress's name? He didn't even take a painting with him.
Did you like that gunfight? Slowest reaction times ever! Most useless hired gun ever. 😂 Bonanza seems to be quite consistent in having people line up to fight very close to each other, standing side by side, looking so unrealistic. In this one, the target is the middle so that the bad guys have a bad case of crossfire, as do the Cartwrights later. 🙂We don't watch Bonanza for realism but they could have made things more plausible.
Perhaps if Adam was walking towards the store, with his back to McDermott, so McDermott and the hired gun both turn to the side to look at him(so that they can't see the Indian's long wind-up). McDermott warns Adam not to take another step towards the store. McDermott draws, so the Indian launches the spear. The hired gun reacts immediately, spinning around and drawing his gun but is shot by the painter. But how to deal with that pathetic back row who should have shot the Indian and/or painter? If Ben had told them to drop their guns, would McDermott still have tried to shoot Adam? I think that's still plausible because his ego would stop him from thinking clearly or that he could actually lose. Bonanza isn't the show for a big gunfight, which would probably be the case if all those people were truly committed to winning.
How would you have written and choreographed the gunfight?

I think it was 38 Native Americans but your point is still made.
