- This Ford 4000 caught fire over 20 years ago. Work to repair it stalled and it sat ever since. Will it start? No electrical system and a faulty injection pump, this will not be easy.

My old man had the 4000 with a secura cab. I always remember having problems with dirt in the filters she is gravity feed of the tank. I know that it was a bugger to bleed i think we even have a spare pump. I know Bundy bear's shed i seen a few of his video's. I remember the old man did the pump think it was a K reg being the old one so that would make her early 70s. Yeah I'd like to see more on it. The old man kept the 4000 till around 2001 or so it spun a shell in the field. It was sitting on a hill and only oil was get to the back one's. It still ran after that but he had bought a Belarus 920 by then. With a loader i think it ended up somwhere down here in the Black Isle with me. A trader boy bought it with the intention of fixing it up. Hope you're all well cracking video snd will it start. Brought back a few happy memories for me the noise of the old ford cranking over. 👍
Hey Ali, good to hear from you buddy. I was thinking you'd like that one alright! I've been warned about bleeding those pumps alright. I even Brough a clickity clack pump to feed it but it wouldn't work. A guy told me the one on his 5600 was so bad they converted to an inline simms!
@@davesworkshop2714 Yeah there terrible I remember being with old man moving hay and the the old ford started hunting. We did the filters in the field think we went thourth to cans of eiffer or Easy start lol the heater plugs on it where useless as well. The old man was a stubborn guy persisted untill it ran. The hay ended up getting put away we where still working at 11.30 at night. Lol I miss them days and I don't 😂😂

I didn't even think it will start because it was previously burned I thought no ways you will give up. Then after some good work BOOM it started
I was starting to think it myself. Luckily though the fire hadn't been that bad on the important side with the starter, fuel pump etc

@@davesworkshop2714 very interesting you say 3 cycl was better than 4 cycl ,down here they tell me stay away from ford because of pourus block.
@@colmanlong1032 I believe the 3 cylinder was less susceptible to going porus for some reason? A buy who has spent 30 odd years rebuilding engines told me there was no comparison. Coolant filters and more importantly, the correct mix of coolant is key to their survival!
@@davesworkshop2714hi would it be better to let the water out of a tractor in winter or to leave coolant in it if it's not being used.

Thanks Kevin. Still loads about alright. They seemed to last far longer in service than 5000s. Most people considered the 3 cylinder to be a far better engine than the 4. She'll drive out alright. The owner offered to tow it into a shed but I've told him he'll be driving it there 🙂👍

Thanks Paul! She did run surprisingly well despite the fact it was peeing diesel from every orifice 😂. I'll reseal the pump and do a few more bits for a future video and get her moving. The owner is keen to get it sorted now its running.

That thing is identical to my ford 3000 and now I learned about the injection pump on it from you🙂🙂 the only diffence in the 4000 vs my 3000 is the 4000 has a low range trans and few other small things but the engine is the same. 👍 thanks for posting dave glad to c ya

Excellent start up. The CAV pumps are pretty good under most conditions but that one was clearly in need of TLC. Well worth the owner re rigging the whole machine now. Thanks for posting.

I thought you were being too optimistic at the start but you persevered. It was running very clean for a tractor sat for twenty years. Great video.

Thanks! Always great to hear from you 🙂👍. Ran very well considering how much fuel the pump was losing. Be interesting to see how it sounds once i fix it. Nothing on manifolds yet unfortunately, must look again soon, but need to revisit a few other jobs plus hopefully there's more will it start candidates on the way 🙂
So your plans with this engine is to seal her up so she can be dependable? Yes. You say so and the slugs that had water on them and are now freed. So new o-rings and seals? I watched fuel spray out of her in three different directions. High pressure spray on some. Not that I understood how you polished such components. Seem genius to me and this cav may some day push this tractor all day producing food for our people. Sweet.
The plan is to strip the pump and fit a new seal kit, plus one of the connections to an injector line is leaking. Hopefully it should run properly then 🙂. I'll give it some basic wiring and get it moving too hopefully. Thanks for watching 🙂👍

Thanks Howard, the only thing I've done with the major is to fill the bores with diesel a few times. Haven't got back to the zetor yet either but I'll revisit them all when time allows!

Just a suggestion. You need to work on your camera technique. It's ver difficult to watch with all the jerking and movement. Almost gives me vertigo.

Would love to know if you figured out what was causing the injection pump to spray out. I had to take a cav pump apart to free stuck plungers and now have the same problem! At least it works now wasn’t working at all before.😂
I still haven't got back to it, but I would think that a new seal kit would sort it. The kit is pretty cheap. I've bought one and I'll let you know how it goes 👍
@@davesworkshop2714Thanks. Been doing a little research myself and apparently there is a check valve in the return line on the side of the pump. If gets stuck it will cause the housing to pressurize. Going to look into it this weekend.

What are your thoughts on Leylands? I love them tractors.
There were none around here so I have no experience of them to be honest. About the closest I've come to them was the Leyland engines used in 3Cs. If I can find one I'll certainly do a video!

That was the most frustrating will it start video I have seen....you seemed scared it will bite you....and it's always cheaper investing in a cheap can of ether at the start than almost burning out a starter and flattening a battery to work out your next move...
Either should only ever be a last resort in starting an engine, it should fire up without it. Also, a diesel engine will not run on either alone. There has to be some fuel present. As for the starter, the rest periods were edited out, so it was given plenty of time to rest and cool off. Anyone can connect a battery and spray either. I like to work things through and try to get it to fire without it.
