Cheltenham Festival winner The Shunter lands £200,000 Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket

- The Shunter repelled all challengers to fulfil a long-term plan in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
Trained by Emmet Mullins, the 10-year-old is more famed for his exploits over obstacles, having won at the Cheltenham Festival and been placed at Grade One level in novice chase company.
Back on the level though, The Shunter teamed up with James Doyle in the two-and-a-quarter-mile contest which offered over £103,000 to the winner.
Doyle rode The Shunter (14-1) with restraint in the early exchanges, making stealthy headway before pushing to the front two furlongs out.
Top weight Tashkhan had been prominent throughout but he was eager for a battle, pushing The Shunter all the way through the closing stages while Pied Piper, another National Hunt runner moving back to the Flat, made a late grab for glory inside the distance.
However, The Shunter dug deep to prevail by three-quarters of length from Pied Piper, with Tashkhan (25-1) a further head back in third and 100-1 shot Bashful Boy grabbing fourth.

To be fair the shunter is quite a story. Hurdles, Fences and Large Handicaps. That’s some route that is. Not so utterly clueless after all…
Ignore the 🧌, if the trainers first name had of been Willie he would of being lauding him for pulling off a big flat win like this for a NH focused trainer. Connections have had some great days with this horse, Martin has never had that feeling so prefers to be salty about any trainer outside his elite 4 winning a big race. It's actually pretty sad when you think about it, I just wish he would seek some help.
@@frankelforever14 Martin is an idiot, actually calling Highfield Princess a yak. Like you i see this win as a magnificent achievement, Emmett is an amazing trainer and shrewd. He does train some flat orientated horses but only a few, this horse is a great horse and the runner up was well decent in Germany as a youngster. The idiot fails to see the essence of racing- just getting rude.

Case and fact Vauban wins flat handicap at Ascot Martin gives it loads (even after all the hurdle defeats that the "monster" was supposedly going to win easily before changing tact and saying he was meant to be a flat horse). The Shunter wins a big flat handicap today and you basically call it a joke, if loverboy Ryan had of got going a bit earlier you would have been raving about him.
