Bands Who RESTARTED Without the Singer… and It Worked

  • Bands who lost a singer to death/infighting and continued on together as a new band... with a new vocalist. It's a bit niche, but bands rebooting without their iconic singer is more common than you might think.

Hey thanks for the little heart. I got to see the minutemen in glorious fashion but not in their natural habitat which would have been a club setting. They opened for REM at the fox theater in Atlanta not long before D Boon died. Absolutely fantastic and one very commendable thing about REM was they gave support bands full complete and properly EQ'd sound whereas most headliners of the time made the openers sound like crap on purpose.

Another detail to add; Brian Marshall was not even present in Creed for the recording of Weathered as he had left the band prior in 2000. If anything that made the tension worse.

Great video! Space was limited, I know, but the story of Mother Love Bone => Pearl Jam is a great one. There's also the kinda obscure Stone Temple Pilots => Talk Show. After STP kicked Scott Weiland to the curb in the late 90's, they had a brief stint with a different singer and a new name, Talk Show. It didn't take long for Scott to come back, the new singer to be kicked, and STP to be reborn.

    hey jon,
a good idea potentially for a 7 on sunday could be seven bands that had a big hit and then tried making a similar song or record like that song, to capitalise on that success. Examples could be the cranberries with zombie > hollywood (or even the whole faithful departed album with a harder rock edge)or even dire straits with sultans of swing > lady writer sounded similar especially the guitar solos

I just gotta say though, Velvet Revolver is a damn beautiful new name that references the old one. Queen + Adam Lambert is an interesting thing overall. Wovenwar was fun too, as well as Audioslave. I would also argue that New Order is the most iconic post vocalist band, save for perhaps Foo Fighters from the ashes of Nirvana (yes, I know it was only 2 members not all of them but still they count to me)

    • @alanlafond9705

Grohl and Smear are both such great musicians though, and I seem to recall the reason Grohl didn't include Krist in Foo Fighters was because it was too weird for Krist to work with Grohl without Kurt being there too, or something like that. Also, as we saw in the video, even Queen's bassist didn't stay for the reboot, so the Foo Fighters are in good company in that regard!
Also, Novoselic actually DID work with Foo Fighters once, as an uncredited guest appearance doing backing vocals on Walking A Line. 😉

Jon, sorry to comment on something unrelated, but i have a question/ possible Seven on Sunday idea. So recently both Blink & Fall Out Boy did a sort of "make your own album art" campaign, and I laughed because I remembered you displaying just how poorly that went for 30STM on the America album review. But then another question occurred to me- was 30STM the first band to do this? Have any other bands had success/failure with this? Regardless of whether you know or not though it occured to me it may be a good SOS: "7 albums where bands let the Fans make the album art", then go into the history of it, your opinions on it, via the 7, and just overall judge each one on whether you personally like it and whether it was successful (also because you reacting to the best and worst of them would be extremely fun to watch)

Are Alter Bridge really considered a supergroup? I'm pretty sure Myles Kennedy wasn't well-known prior to AB, although he went on to sing in Slash's backing band

Queen + Paul Rogers > Queen + Adam Lambert

Can’t stand Adam Lambert. It always sounds like he’s screeching the high notes that Freddie used to handle with ease.

🤣🤣🤣 You are the first person to claim this. Even Freddie's biggest fans admit that Adam has better vocal skills. He sings the high notes comfortably where Freddie (live) missed them. I recommend an ear doctor and to be sure, comment only on what you understand.

@@entil2001 Don't be surprised. You obviously didn't bother to compare the live performances of Freddie and Adam. Otherwise you wouldn't be writing this nonsense.
