  • Modern Drummer met up with Butch Vig last June during Garbage's co-headlining tour with Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds. Butch took us through his Roland TD-50X fully-electronic VAD drums.

    So refreshing to see Butch not only playing an electric kit live, but also building kits starting with the stock Roland samples. So many others use electronics sparingly and with all custom samples. As a local gigging drummer who recently started using the VAD-307 as my main kit, this will definitely lend some credibility. Thanks Butch!

    Thank you Modern Drummer, for showing that electronic drums can be used for live gigs. Some of the comments here prove what I already know, there is a lot of sceptisism. I think mostly from people that haven't played on current (!) edrums. I have been playing electronic drums for more than 30 years and they have evolved massively (I now play a TD-50X as well). It is just a different instrument, just like a keyboard is different from an acoustic piano.

    • @Iamadrummer
      @Iamadrummer Před měsícem +2

      The DWe kit is relatively new, and the TD50X he plays has been out for a number of years now. In 2022, Roland acquired DW so they can make accustic sets, not just e-kits. Also, since Roland acquired DW, the DWe kit now works with the Roland TD50 module.

    Makes total sense for a producer/musician to do this. I usually dont like this fad of electronic kits with longer realistic wooden shells (I love the futuristic aesthetic of pad e kits like the EMerge or the DTXs), but he seems to be the kind of guy well aware of the logistic benefits.

    Butch Vig is the King Midas of the 90s. I can't afford a Roland kit like that, so I took an old Roland TD-6v module and made my own DIY conversion kit with my late 80's Mapex kit. The new Lemon brand of E-cymbals tho? Excellent! Almost as good as the Roland cymbals, but at a fraction of the price!

My question is, to you have a replacement for everything in this kit, in the wings? Similarly to how a tech would help swap out a blown snare, do you have a backup SD card, kit brain, etc etc.? Thank you!

    It's online so people just have to be negative without thinking. Shocking. So many people complaining about price and the influence this will have to make people play electronic drums. How much do you think the kits name player use cost??? This kit is probably a LOT cheaper. Just check out Danny Carey's brass snare. I didn't see anyone complaining about an $8000 snare drum on that video. Also, who cares if someone learns to play on an electric kit? It's another drummer in the world. Who cares what they play? I've toured with both acoustic and electronic and both work really well. A lot of those "acoustic" drummers you hear live are triggering sounds along with their acoustic set anyway. because it is easier to get a great sound that way. At the end of the day, that's what it is about.
