  • Doing some comparison cuts with my 038 Mag and MS361 with both the 30" Oregon bar and the 24" Stihl bar.
    The saws spec around the same HP i wanted to do the video to show the difference in how they pull the bigger bars in big red oak. Also got a kickback when i looked away for a split second.

    I switched to a Stihl MS460 oiler on my ported Stihl MS361 chainsaw. The Stihl MS460 has a higher oil flow rate/volume than the Stihl MS 361. It allows you to run up to a 28” bar on the MS361. I am currently running a 24” bar on my MS361 thru hardwoods like oak,ash,etc..

      Thats a good tip. The 361 is probably getting due for some more maintenance and that would be a good upgrade.

    I loved the video. It was a very fair comparison and I loved my Ms361 when I had it.
    I can't afford the Stihl saws I want, so I bought a Neo tec 872 which I heard was cloned off of the 038 magnum 72cc saw or the ms381 I'm not positive which one. Anyway it will be delivered today and it comes with a 24inch bar.
    I hope you can do more comparisons in the future.😎👍

      I got mine in and was pleasantly surprised at how solid and well built it is. I have ran about a tank of fuel at 35:1 through it 5 heat cycles. Runs really good out of the box. I leaned it out some and then I took the muffler off and pulled the cage out and added a port and advanced the timing 4*. Really woke it up. Had to lean it out quite a bit to get it back where it was. I’m still fairly fat for another tank of fuel. Nice saw though and oils really good

    I had a 30" bar on my MS460 years ago,but just didn't like it,so I went to a 24" and it became unstoppable. I have a 20" on my MS361 and it runs like lightning,I wish we had oak in my area of Montana but we just have ponderosa pine(unless someone cuts down an Ash in town) and I'm also disabled now so I can't really "play with my saws" anymore.

    • @IndependenceIron
      @IndependenceIron  Před rokem +1

      Hate to hear you can no longer play with the saws. I do enjoy them it at times. The 038 with the 30" bar is heavy and not balanced real well and is tough on my elbow with tendonitis. I definitely think the 038 Mag with a 24, and a 361 with a 20 is a pretty sweet spot for both saws.

    Can I use a 32" bar on my 038 Super Pro

    • @IndependenceIron
      @IndependenceIron  Před 5 měsíci

      I think it would do it but struggle depending on the wood. I am in mostly all hardwoods but if your mostly cutting softwoods it might handle it, but you won't be able to lean on it much. Full skip chain needed for sure.
      My mag has a 5cc advantage over your super and even with the 30 on full skip i have to go easy on it with the bar fully in hardwoods or it will snag and stall out. Your saw with a 32 would be more comparable to my MS361 running that 30" bar. That part of the video starts around 8mins.

      @@IndependenceIron : I appreciate the reply. Sounds like you know what you are talking about.
      I just said the heck with the 038 and bought a 661 instead. Lol...Now I don't have to worry about those big jobs.
      The 038 wasn't near big enough for the job I had at hand anyway. I had a enormous Mulberry stump that was about 5 1/2 feet tall, and had had about 6-7 trees growing out of it. Basically, it was one big knot. And the lower you went, the worse it got.
      The 661 cut through it like butter, but I dulled one chain and destroyed another. Sure glad that job is done!

      @@nathankluttz2015 It never hurts to give the saw a rest especially if its a little small for the job anyways. I take my time with big stump and my 038. I could say im resting the saw but sometimes im just resting myself also LOL!!

    Were both chains brand new? That is the only way the test would mean anything.

    • @IndependenceIron
      @IndependenceIron  Před rokem +1

      Chains were both used. But i was swapping the same chain/bar on each saw. I ran the 361 cuts first so if anything the 038 would have had the slight disadvantage of having the same chain that the 361 cut with plus 1 extra cut of wear. Minimal really when it comes to a used chain.

  • @gwp1ohio
    @gwp1ohio Před 11 měsíci

    Lol...all around No. What a poor representation of each saw and how not to run A saw

    • @IndependenceIron
      @IndependenceIron  Před 11 měsíci

      The point is not so show how "Fast" each saw can make a 24" cut, but to compare each saw against each other. Both ran the same bar/chain, and i actually tried to give the 361 a bit of an advantage in that i let it make the timed cuts first with each bar/chain, and then the 038 mag made its cuts second so there was a 1 cut of additional wear(mostly negligable) the 038 had to deal with. Still pretty fair for each saw.
      038 12% faster with a 24" bar and 24% faster with a 30" bar. And i would venture a bet that with a 18 or 20" bar the 038 would have almost no advantage.

      I have always liked the stihls. We bought a top handle Echo 2511T, and i love how light that thing is but it doesn't seem to like to idle as good as the stihls do, and it can be a pain to restart even when warm. Would definitely like to move up the 066 territory.

      @@IndependenceIron thanks for the reply I was on the verge of buying the echo top handle.
      Literally in hand but put it back. Looking at the battery saws wish Dewalt would come out with a sweet little limber. Love my 066 running a 32" and have a 36" for stumping. But damn it's getting heavier as I'm getting older. Used to run it 8-10 hrs a day limping bucking falling. At 46 years old it's a great saw but heavy with the 36". Your 038 magnum will become your favorite soon. Great saw. God bless brother.
