- In this video we visit the US Virgin Islands where we stay in St. John and explore the beautiful nation park along with the northern beaches. One of the days we decided to visit the Honeymoon beach (second best beach on St. John, Truck Bay being the best) and discovered an abundant resort that’s been left behind since the hurricane Irma devastation. Caneel Bay has been around since mid 1950’s founded by the Rockefeller family. We explored the resort to show you guys what is left of the infrastructure. Enjoy and commit below what else you would like to see in our channel. Thanks!

I guess I'm quite randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to watch new movies online ?
@Hunter Harper i use flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Hunter Harper I would suggest flixzone. You can find it on google =)
This was our favorite vacation spot. It was a magical place and never seemed crowded, because everything was spread out. Wish you could have gotten over to Cottage 7, made famous by Sean Connery’s stay while filming a James Bond movie. Glad to see the donkeys survived the hurricanes.
Wow that’s awesome, thanks for sharing some history
This hurts my heart. I used to work there a couple years back. That kitchen where you guys went almost through was my stomping ground
Yeah, it’s very sad to see it destroyed
I know a man named Oriel that used to take care of the donkeys. He misses Caneel Bay and his donkey pals so much!!! We've stayed in St. John many times and ate at Caneel Bay.
I usually love urban explore, but in this case I can’t help but feel violated. What’s going on with the USVIs since the hurricanes hit us in terms of corruption, greed, land rights and absolute ineptitude is sad and disgusting. 2.5 years ago this place was the premier eco resort in the Caribbean, and employed hundreds. So sad.
Pamela Johnson I’m so sorry to hear that! The exact same thing happened to my beach town after a cat 5 direct hit. That was 5 years ago and nothing will ever be the same. Greed greed greed and preying on people’s desperation and shock from the storm.
My wife and I spent two weeks in Cabin 7 for our honeymoon in December of 1998. This place should be builded back up. The people that worked their were the nicest people on earth. This was own for a long time by Lawrence Rockefeller. It has 7 beaches to enjoy.
This is so heart shattering. We had a house in Peter Bay for my entire life. I remember going to Caneel Bay when I was a toddler. So sad to see the destruction.
I was there in the 1970s and that place was the best resort I have been to. Nothing compares to that place. It's very sad.
Breaks my heart. I was there in April of 2017 as part of a sailing certification trip. It was the most enchanting place I had ever seen. You guys missed the round restaurant on the hill. Probably gone now.
It was very sad 😞 to see such a beautiful location destroyed
@@BurningRubberr please go there and go to the round restaurant, you guys missed it, it's beautiful. please go back (if you live there)
I have been to this resort 3 times :) but this makes me so sad... :( it was the most relaxing resort we have been to No tv just the sound of the waves stayed in hawknest bay room 221 . all 7 beaches are great we seen lots of turtles and other fish. food was always good. not a cheap place to go... :) we only hope someday they will fix it up. thank you for the walk around .
Thank you for watching, we hope they fix it up one day
how much did it cost you to stay there for a week with ocean view?
I worked there back in the 70's. Great place to work. 🌴🥰
Thanks guys for doing this🤙
Thanks for watching!
Caneel Bay Plantation was such a beautiful resort. The devastation is sad. A side note: George Harrison (Of The Beatles) and his wife Olivia stayed there in March of 1976 and wrote a couple of songs at the resort "Dear One" and "Soft Touch" (As a warm sun rises, into joy I'm sailing - As the rain does falling, on your soft touch)
We had our destination wedding there in 2000. It was first class in every way and I will always remember it the way it was for that glorious weekend with family and friends. Sad to see it now.
In 1989-1991 when I was in my 20's, I worked for Caneel Bay as a 'beach director' (not as glamorous as it sounds - I handed out snorkeling gear), and then as a scuba instructor for the company (Paradise Watersports) that worked out of the resort. I was up and down the dock (6:15) multiple times a day, six or seven days a week and logged over 500 dives off of St. John. It's one of my life highlights. This is heart-breaking.
Wow, that is awesome. When was the last time you were at the resort and do you still live on the island?
Kevin C I was there then! Xmas of 91!
That was awesome guys. Thank you !
I remember seeing Henry Kissinger, Alan Alda, Frank Purdue, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft all enjoying Caneel Bay in the 1970s.
Thank you for being adventurous and posting! We visited Caneel multiple times and this brought back amazing memories, last trip was July 2017, it was our sanctuary. Saddened of the current state as it will most likely not see any movement until 2023 or after. Thankfully there are other gorgeous options for accommodations on the prestige island of St. John.
Thank you for coming across our video and watching it! We found St.john to be a beautiful location. Very unfortunate it’s still down
Thanks for being respectful of the place and thanks for video
Just saw it today for the first time since our honeymoon there. Unbelievably sad. The best part was one of the guys on our shore excursion used to work there when we were there and we shared photos.
One of the best Caribbean resorts ever, so sad this happened.
This was the most expensive resort on the island 😢
You have videotaped Honeymoon Beach and Caneel Beach and Little Caneel. The resort is 170 acres with 7 beaches. We went last in summer 2017, first time in the 80s. So sad to see this video, but amazed that the trees and shrubbery look so good. The resort was built by Laurence Rockefeller and donated to the US National Park Service. Congress and the current group that leases the property have yet to reach an agreement about its future. So many people on island and St. Thomas worked here and depended on the resort. Sad to see that its future is so uncertain.
It really is sad to see it sitting like that
@@BurningRubberr Yeah. They got it extended 100yrs, and I hope to go back soon. #Room101 #TurtleBay
We've been there 3 times. Absolutely loved it. It's such a shame that this happened and nobody is fixing it.
I worked their in 1977 between 11 and 12 grade as a summer job painting
That’s awesome, sounds like a lot of people have some good memories and history left there
painting is hard work
This is really sad. I live on St. Croix for half the year, and there are places here that haven’t been restored since the 2017 hurricanes. Carambola was also a Rockresort, and has just been reopened in 2023, I think by Marriott. It seems weird that that the Rockefeller company would walk away from both of these properties…. you’d think it would be worth bringing back.
Having vacationed there multiple times before the storm is is sickening to see it now.
I went from Puerto Rico three times to work in that hotel, nice memories and what a pity to see it so abandoned, I hope one day they fix it
Hahahah! I got run too! Two years ago I did make it to Turtle Bay Beach at Caneel Bay Resort, where the did the ole Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoots! Filmed some Movies, and big name celebrities stayed. The beach is really nice, the destruction of the resort is crazy right? I was checking it out, and thankfully the guard in the Golf Cart was taking a nap! He did come down to the beach and gave me a little grief for pulling out some chaise Lounges, but honestly he was cool with us, told us to put em back when we left. How we got there will remain my secret it is basically inacessable, not even rental dinghys allowed. Weather was not so good that day, but we sucked down some Red Stripes for a couple hours. Some of the Kids that work at Honeymoon go over there, they all know each other. Be nice if they rebuilt it someday, seems to be a lot of legal red tape? And no one willing to make such a huge investment? Cool video, a great Memory. Check out photo's of Turtle Bay in it's heyday, it was something else
So we stayed here in 2015, it was a spectacular resort. It is so sad to see what has happened. It was the definition of luxury!
there’s a beautiful stretch of beach on the back side of resort as well….
Looks like the owners took the insurance money and ran. With a bunch of money, new furnishings and landscaping this place is back in business. What a shame.
So sad! Made many great friends and memories over the years. What a shame! Lease isn't up until 2023, so I doubt anything will be done before then.
Feel the same way. I don’t think these kids under how understated and low key the resort was. Yes it was very expensive and luxurious but it wasn’t showy or anything. Those rooms on the beach were the best! And the snorkeling right in front was great! Great sea turtles etc.. makes me so sad:(((
Storm damage doesn't mean it doesn't belong to anyone. Try to get owner permission instead of trespassing.
Damn fellas great footage!!! We went on our honeymoon and watching the overhead footage of the destruction sucks. You guys showed us what fond memories we have. Thanks👊🏼
it will be closed thru 2022 but will be beautifully restored by then. 100 Million to do it. Not a drop in the bucket but to restore this place , a place where even Bennett Cerf once visited, is worth it.
It's not completely abandoned , after all the grass was recently cut... I was a guest at Caneel bay in Sep 1968 (so was Linda Johnson, daughter of president Johnson, who was in Caneel for their honeymoon)...
My parents had their honeymoon here back in 1981. Very sad.
Wow. This video is almost 2 years after Irma. Caneel Bay was a major Caribbean resort. I have to think the owners did not have proper insurance to rebuild right away. Shame. Hope someone rescues it.
Thanks for watching!
hurricane insurance is VERY expensive. And that's correct, the amount paid out was probably pocketed and wasn't enough , simultaneously. So very lucrative for the owners in all likelihood...but that's just speculation. Bennett Cerf once visited this resort in 1965.
Caneel was so beautiful. You guys didn’t find it, haha.
We did!
I’ve always wanted to see this place abandoned. My dad actually got married here
Had my honeymoon here in 2001...... was there many times after. So very sad......
Damaged in hurricane Irma they tryin to rebuild
omg I have been here its so sad :( I wish it would reopen
My dad used to work there. 😢
It was hit by a hurricane I've stayed there before
Wow, tell us what it was like? how expensive it was , how the staff were, and if you saw any celebs?
Call the Baumler's from renovation island......
That is sad - I lived on St. John from 1989 - 1993 and Caneel Bay for many many years was one of the most beautiful and exclusive resorts in the Caribbean let alone on St. John - It was a resort like something out of a Hollywood movie - I moved back to NYC but when I came back to visit in 1999 I stayed at Caneel Bay - the rooms were huge with living room kitchen patio and large bathrooms - very expensive looking - casual but elegant - the gardens and grounds were fantastically beautifully and vast, the service was impeccable, native women would serve guests bottled water while guests were frolicking in the ocean water, the bathrobse in the rooms were white, thick and fluffy and they gave us comlimentary large carved wooden bowl filled with exotic soaps, shampoo and creams such as mango and coconut - you could sit on the patio by the beach for breakfast and they would serve you the daily New York Times with your breakfast - the hotel yaht took guest around the island with h'dorves and a fantastic rum bunch - it is sad to see this magnificent resort still destroyed and left unrenovated.
Wow, thanks for sharing a bit of your history on the resort. It really is a shame to see it in the condition that it is right now.
@@BurningRubberr Caneel Bay was the only resort on St. John when it opened in 1956 along with the National Park of St. John - very exclusive & expensive resort - very posh, sofisticated, casual but elegant villas - cost $2,000 per night at high season - I remember even the beautiful peacocks they kept on the grounds. It was low-key but at the same time truly breath taking visually - I had to pinch myself while being there as it was a slice of heaven. And I don't see any photos of it before the hurricane - if they do rebuilt I hope they will restore the quality rather than put some modern ugly hotel there. Keep safe guys - strange times we are living in with this pandemic and lockdown.
Wow, that is crazy expensive to stay there per night. Thanks for sharing more history. Also what part of the island did you live at?
@@BurningRubberr I lived in a little pink wooden guest cottage on a cliff over looking the ocean which was between Coral Bay and Salt Pond - across the way from Miss Lucy's restaurant. I would guess my cottage is no longer there.
@@BurningRubberr is this resort for sale?
Is most of the island in ruins?
What is the state of things there now, and future plans for the island?
US hedge fund (owner) collected on underinsured policy (not enough received to rebuild). Hedge fund current lease with US expires in less than 3 years. Not enough time to recoup additional monies required for rebuild.
And, current lease (more friendly to the hedge fund) grandfathered in and will not pass to next owner.
US wants the next lease to match current US Park Service contracts but hedge fund says they will not rebuild unless the next lease is an extension of the current lease (more friendly to the hedge fund), so.......expect the damaged resort will default to US property, and property may be restored to the original natural state starting in 2023.
Unless US government compromises.
Hedge fund gambled with underinsuring, decision based of hurricane history, best guide.
Hedge funds have extremes on gains and losses, more than the average investor desires, but also less regulated by US government.
I think they got it extended for 100 yrs.
John Hunter isn’t it still part of the “rock resort” chains?
I was there in 2007. It was the worst experience of my entire life.
La brujeria y Los experimentos que de hacian ahi son otra cosa.
Mi vida nunca sera la misma despues de haber visto tanta maldad.
Pero Dios es tan grande que derribo ese templo del demonio y nunca volvera a existir.
Why would you go back to film this video after you were told to stay out? This island has been through a lot and just being mindful of that and respecting what locals are telling you instead of gaining followers for your video is the least you can do if you care about our home at all….
