Watch Collecting with Dr. Albert Coombs, the Story Behind his Rolex Hulk, & Launch of CP Time

- Dr. Albert Coombs is a passionate watch collector from the DC area, and his fascination with these mechanical objects began when he was around 7 years old. His intrigue with high-end horology kicked up a few notches at a pivotal moment in his career, as he received a Rolex GMT from a friend to celebrate his dental boards. In this special Collector Conversation, Dr. Coombs sits down with C’Q at WatchBox’s headquarters and retraces his early experiences in watch collecting, quality time spent with family, and the sentimental side of this horological hobby.
Of course, watches are a focal point of the conversation, and Dr. Coombs’ collection does not disappoint. From Patek Philippe’s Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5960, to the Rolex Hulk - which he happened to add to his collection as his wife was in labor with their son - his grandfather’s Waltham which shows signs a life well-lived, and an absolute favorite, the Patek 5164, Dr. Coombs recalls the stories and memories around these watches and more.
C’Q and Al also discuss a new initiative - CP Time, which promotes camaraderie, knowledge, and the love of horology through the lens of black culture. This dynamic group is in its early days and offers a platform to connect people around the world as they share in celebrating and learning more about watches and the people who collect them. Agree with many of the other comments. Left us wondering about the watches in the box and on his wrist. Would love to see more like this, but with a bit of emphasis on the breadth of the collection and pieces
Great video! Love seeing a great guy telling his story. Reminds us of the “everyman” vibe. Headed to the Rolex shop, “too broke” then went to Tag was too funny! Telling the Truth about buying on credit cards. Many folks do (I also don’t recommend it), but it is realistically most collector’s first option. His relationship with his Dad and his own kids was admirable.
All that said, take pics of the watches individually on the front end and insert them when the guest speaks about them. It helps tremendously! Great video nonetheless.

This is a powerful discussion. Love this as the father of three sons, legacy is everything. I constantly think of what son gets what watch. The story building behind the watch is real. Milestones to vacations. Saltwater of Martha’s Vineyard to the grind of Manhattan commute… the stories are building. Great. Ken.

Men are extremely protective and conscious of their possessions, their loves, their passions. I too want to see the watches, yet I totally understand why I would not want strangers to know what I had.

Lovely story Dr. Coombs. I just went to the newsstand to get a copy of the NYT with their birthdate, and I did that for all three kids. Rolex should open a boutique by NewYork-Presbyterian. CP TIme should start a tradition for members to buy a watch on the year of a newborn. Dont forget the "push-present".

Funny. Tim has done a few of these and they sometimes fall into collector flexing. What you’ve done here is the definition of collector conversations. I see people complaining that you didn’t show enough of Dr. Coombs’ watches. I think they’re missing the point.
