Architect Lenka Holcnerova of Atelier Holcnerova transformed this 18th-century ground floor space into a calm, open, and flexible home, office, and exhibition space for a visual artist. The entrance, which feels more like a gallery than an apartment, features a restored stone arch and a large glass table, repurposed from an old door, that functions as a desk, dining table, and exhibition display. The all white kitchen, tucked neatly into two niches, blends seamlessly into its surroundings. The new bathroom is split into two areas: a toilet and basin for when the apartment is being used for work, and a bathtub that is cleverly hidden under a custom-made cover, which doubles as a surface when not in use.

this is really not a home, but an atelier with a facilities to do overnighters.
Exactly! I feel that many viewers have missed the point 🤦🏻♀️
I think so too! Cooking is not a priority, I guess they order in all the time.
My thoughts exactly.
Yet the title says "Artist's Home" 😵
Agreed. That said, it seems odd to give so much precious private space to a bath-tub, which are v unusual in Lisbon homes (I live there) and to have a toilet - which is presumably used for public events too - only separated by a sheer curtain.
Looks nice, but the kitchen is a joke.
The kitchen alone would make this place unlivable to me. It's just much more of an office/gallery than a functional apartment
It probably just wasn't a priority by the client to have a big kitchen
@@LeviKanal I agree. If they eat out and dry clean their clothes, this is the perfect work-from-home space. :)
@@LeviKanal obviously, but for most people it just wouldn't work, which makes me think it's not the best use of space for most
@@blindsoldier wtf
I am thrilled to see the original stone arch brought back to life and the ceiling beam in sympatico with the building.
The drawback for me is the kitchen. Who cares about a dishwasher when there isn’t an oven? Lack of storage is also a negative aspect.
The fridge is very small too.
It seems the bathtub had more priority than the kitchen.
The floorplan does not give the impression that someone or a couple live here as their full time residence. More of a weekender and a private gallery for exhibitions/ showings.
I absolutely love the arch! I was wondering about the dishwasher, too. But as it also doubles as an art gallery, maybe it could be useful for washing wine glasses?
I think the dishwasher makes sense, usually these kind of art galleries offer some drinks/sparkling wine at their events.
Totally agree, I don't see anyone living in this space due to the lack of basically everything.. and weird choice to put a bathtub there imo 🤷🏻
They probably rent it out as an airBNB, I guess in that case a bathtub sells better because it looks stylish @@Nini00000
I did, I had to choose between an dishwasher and an oven. Chose the first, never regretted it.
Forgot to add, this kitchen is totally NOT a working kitchen. Much more for an office.
Wait, the toilet is only separated by a sheer curtain? I wouldn’t want to use it during an art exhibition 😅
If you need to use it you'd be the exhibition 🤣
some people would love that tho😂
I kept imagining the line waiting to use it…

I keep saying WTF every time something is revealed. It's not all practical, but I can see how everything works in real life. This is crazy and she's amazing for making such a limited space with a full function. Applause for her creativity. Love the clean lines and the materials she used too.
It's so exciting to see how the owner's personal needs are considered and how a space could have many functions depending on what the owner desires to use it for. Even if I would be absolutely miserable living in such a space (and I definitely would be there!), I love seeing how a space is personalised. This is why I follow this channel- to see how different we all are and how different space we need. However, I can often find tips and tricks for my home renovation, even if the overall space presented in the video does not meet my needs. However, some minor details inspire me.
@@Trammiliin_nr2 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
I'm certain this is more of a pied a terre than a full-time home.
50sqmeters- it’s not a small place😂😂 it could be a nice family home, but it was converted into the gallery😅 blinds could be digital ones😊
@@liliabird3160 I live in a 54sqm flat, and I think it’s a decent size place I have here. I have a bedroom, livingroom, kitchen and bathroom. Plus some storage space in the basement. I’ve came to conclusion that “small” can be interpreted very diferently. I like the size. Heating bills are reasonable (we have snowy winters here), cleaning is managable, but I have enough space for my dog and hobbies, but also to invite people over. Sometimes I feel it’s funny how people with very serious faces talk how to manage living in such small space. 😅
Of course it would't work for someone living permanently there, but as a multifunctional space with the option to host someone for a few nights (like an artist exposing there) it is really well thought!
Looks like a really nice working space for occasional sleepovers. Given the limited storage space, tiny closet and few kitchen appliances as well as the makeshift sofa bed, I guess living in this place daily would be quite inconvenient.
It is rare that someone takes the time and effort to revitalize a space back to its former beauty without imposing too much of their own will over it and making it something it is not. This space is optimized well for its intended use as a location for an artist to work/showcase their stuff and live for extended periods. Many artists have a process where they get into grooves and work continuously night and day to get things done...and this is a space to make that happen. nice work!
I like some of the things, but trying to make it 3 things doesn't work for me. I would say primarily it is a studio with the option to sleep over and have an exhibition. It just doesn't come across as anyone's home.
I have to agree with many that the kitchen is not a cook's kitchen ... but overall I really like how she has set it up, with the bathroom tucked under and the little mezzanine, and I love how she kept that arch.
Overnightable studio is an amazingly cool thing to have. Soak all the debris off in the bath once you're done working at inevitably three in the morning then pass out upstairs until lunchtime.
she definitely has another apartment somewhere else
Some of the choices are top notch: exposing the arch, taking out the low hung ceilings to gain all that height, and to dig into the ground to create the back half that allows a full bathroom/bedroom. This is where the disconnect where architects build more like an art installation and not for real living. The kitchen is more a mini fridge. I've seen AirBnB's list they have a kitchen and it's a microwave and a mini bar fridge like this. It's not a kitchen. The toilet with no privacy...Imagine the smells that come out of that open space into the rest of the open space. The bathtub I love. Who doesn't like a good soak. I think the arch is a missed opportunity. I would love to see a shallow wood built-in wall size book case. It would be stunning because you could play with the geometry of the shelves and open spaces and have great storage opportunities for books, art pieces, plants, etc. I agree with many others. This is a place for work and showing art. It's not a living space unless needed for a 1-3 nights. It's not a true apartment. She's an architect and she uses this space to show off her skills but it skills for a commercial space not a residential. I also love the big open front doors that brings in all that light.
Everyone is a minimalist on this channel.
it's a gallery by day so it has to be
@@marvinraphaelmonfort8289Well -- not the bathtub area. :)
I personally would've used that area for something else. But -- my hobbies are different. :)
And loves white. Almost every apartment is pure white with a little wood. Guess minimalists love sterile hospital vibes.
You kind of have to be to have small homes.
It might seem so, but nobody is actually living in that "apartment". Nobody could do that kind of minimalism where you have zero storage space and a dishwasher but no real kitchen.
This is not a living situation, it's a commercial place where maybe once in a while someone stays overnight
Clever design elements and aesthetically pleasing - but this apartment does not look like it is lived in permanently. The fridge is one of the smallest I have ever seen. The clothes hanging in the wardrobe look like a hand picked, curated collection based on a matching color scheme of tonal neutrals. Feels more like a work/office space with a spare bed in the mezzanine.
It's beautiful to look at. A work of art. But to live in? Where's the "stuff"? We all, always have "stuff". To me, this would be for an occasional sleep-over, not to live.
In the words of Beavis and Butthead, stuff sucks...
What a wonderfully designed space. It feels extremely modern yet very artsy
I love the exposed arch and ceiling and also think that digging down was such a clever choice in giving both a sleeping loft and a full bath. I think that I might have put a small shower in the lower space instead of the large tub (I am not a bath person)and either used the tub wall for closet or pantry space if someone wanted to live there full time. I also would add a row of white upper cabinets in each of the niches so that it doubled the usable cabinet space in the kitchen area. I might have even kept the toilet in the front niche so that it was available to patrons during exhibitions.
Love how they kept some original features! Beautiful 😍
This place is aethereal. She did an impressive job!
As both an artist and minimalist, I could definitely live in this space. Having a space to exhibition as well, would be just ideal for me too. The archway is beautiful, and rightfully made a feature.
I love bath is being covered and bed is warmed by chimney! So original and very minimalistic at the same time. Such an amazing art space and office. loved it!!
Does anyone live there?
Happy to see my beloved Lisbon here again 🇵🇹
This place is 90% office 10% house
The overall renovation is lovely - being able to dig out a few feet doubled that back space and makes the living space nearly invisible. But that is definitely a kitchenette of someone who rarely cooks!
It looks absolutely beautiful but I would argue its more of and art and workspace. For me, the other essential elements of a home i.e. kitchen, toilet, laundry and bedroom are a mere afterthought in this project.
This space is interesting and unique. It seems like a gallery 1st, home 2nd.
Amazing!! Beautiful balance between studio/gallery/short stay home :)
Best use of space i have see, for a very difficult brief. Combining a public gallery with a hidden comfortable home brilliant! Hats of to the architect. I like many others would have preferred a larger fridge and an oven but I don't think it is possible or you would lose the gallery like asthetic. Which is vital to the function the owner required.
very nice bathroom, just a curtain for a toilet is a dubious choice if we consider it as a public space
The bathtub cover is a great idea. As a painter, trying to actually work and live in that space wouldn't work. Painting is messy and requires quite a lot more supplies.
I love the spaces and the use of raw materials, thank you for showing
This is a beautiful space and has clearly been renovated to serve a very specific individual experience. I can't see myself in a space similar to this, nor will there be many spaces having a similar structural requirement of a stone arch that becomes the focal point of a design.
The first of these I've seen where I've wondered at its inclusion.
Love the stone, clean lines and elegance of the house/atelier.
Lovely bright, peaceful/tranquil and open. Fantastic for a studio (although very, very little storage), gallery and short stay.
Love how well-integrated this space is, including all the details
I wish she would've elaborate on by who en when the pace is actually used.
❤❤beautiful. It simplicity makes the this place light and airy. The arched stone brings warm and it is an amazing center piece - making the studio larger. The bathroom is also versatile but I will put so struts on the bathtub doors. It so white and crisp and open. It great that you can keep the beautiful vintage style but making modern ❤❤
Nice design and creative solutions, but the space looks like yet another Airbnb, with a non fuctional kitchen and a wardrobe that is barely there. I could not live there long term.
This is stunning! Nádherné, pani Lenka!
I love it. Some artists live in camper vans with a lot less. The kitchen is easy to clean like small apartments in Japan. To be able to live and work in the same space with no commuting is a big plus. It is very stylish and well planned. Such a lovely area to live.
Very unique place, great work!
Wow! What a creative redesign. Love the versatility!
Beautiful triple-use of this space.
I’m partial to old building with very high ceiling. This place has a nice minimalist utilitarian design while maintaining character that can only come with such historical building
its a beautiful use of space and you can see what the priorities of the owner!
This is not an apartment, it’s a work space with an area to sleep when needed. It doesn’t have a functional kitchen or space to relax and entertain. It can’t be both a livening and work space and it’s futile to try.
Such a beautiful space!
Beautiful!
I know the area and your external look on this old building space is amazing, congrats! Enjoy your creative journey!
This is more like an office with accomodations
minimal ones at that
Simple and beautiful, I bet it’s not licensed as a living place 😀 but the prices of apartments or houses in Lisbon and area are ridiculous high, it’s a huge huge problem today. I would love to live in this kind of space just with a real kitchen. Congratulations nice job
The architectural features are stunning. That’s about the only positive for me… doubt this is lived in. Not one personal item, not one practical room. Kitchen??? Open toilet??? Uncomfortable sofa bed??? And who takes a bath every day instead of shower 😅
It all looks beautiful and clean, more like a showcase home.
it's not even a showcase home as it's so unlivable in reality lol
"And who takes a bath every day instead of shower?"
me...
@@mateuszzdyb3547 good for you, wish I could 😅
so gorgeous!
Love it!
Very well thought and executed.
I like everything apart from the bathroom. It needs a proper door and exhaust fan. The minimal kitchen is fine for those working there or staying overnight. It's obviously not a home. This gallery is beautifully renovated with that magnificent arch rightly being the star.
I love it!❤
Brilliant!
gorgeous 🥰 love the whole concept
A very beautiful space with lovely light but obviously whomever "lives" here uses the space mostly for work. I do love what they have done to make the space seem bigger and brighter.
Beautiful
The same concept can work if you add white sliding panels to cover a slightly more functional kitchen. You could add upper storage, and other facilities and still keep the space clean and tidy. I love the concept of home / gallery!
Amazing transformation. Great guest space for clients and exhibiting artists. The kitchinette could have been more cleverly designed Thanks for sharing.
She's fabulous.
Superb!
Beautiful and brilliantly done! I love getting your videos every Thursday!
I'd need Upper units in the kitchen. G Ire
This is a nice place to work long hours
You could use some Riktig curtain hooks to make them look less messy. The apartment looks aerated. The top for the bathtub could be done a bit better, perhaps with sliding panels. Kudos for you, reinventing spaces and respecting old buildings.
Not bad at all.
But I'll want few changes if I was designing it.
A light door in bathroom, just for the sake of separation of space and privacy.
Also, if behind the bed/ sleeping area there can be a glass partition touching ceiling with curtains and small opaque glass door it'll offer much needed privacy and barrier from noise.
😊
so lovely
Beautiful 😍
Very nice, and functionally
Stunning!! Does the fireplace really work without a chimney?
sublime!!!
best one so far
Clever and spacious and economical.
Work space and client and home.
Travel to work minimum.
such a clever way of transforming a space!
This space has lovely bones and I like her taste. I'd love to see what she could have done if she didn't have to make it multifunctional, if she could have designed it simply as a home.
It's amazing and beautiful, but my problem is the kitchen (I find it lacking) and too small storage
Nice place 👌
Thumbs up. Both "mental" (ancient bones honored, naked , left alone) AND *yielding (elements used, tones and hues, choice of fabrics, etc.). Pliant, clear, and human base for anyone thoughtful, gentle, and independent of spirit.
It’s an atelier & showroom with some amenities - which is grand. But if that’s the case - the guest toilet needs a serious rethink. Hiding the tub doesn’t quite complete the conversion, unless there’s a locking main bath door I didn’t see.
Absolutely amazing Lenka! Can you do my house next?
In my country the toilet area would be illegal for a public space.
It looks really neat and airy. There is so much empty space at the expense of comfort though… The kitchen for instance looks a little impractical because its is so minimized although the tall ceiling and large dining room would definitely allow more horizontal and vertical space. maybe the empty space is needed within the atelier or the owner isnt much of a cook, but i still dont understand why function was exchanged for more space which seems to go unused (so it seems in the video at least, if not i wouldve liked to have the design process explained more carefully within the video)…
Beauyand so clean
lovely
Fabulous
It's an interesting concept
Ca donne envie d'ouvrir son propre petit studio dans son appartement, c'est vraiment beau.
I subscribed to this channel for the sake of such apartments
It's a dream apartment for me except for its street level location.
Mystified about where the fireplace chimney is and how it could possibly work. An excellent use of space that could be even more homely if there was no need to function as an exhibition/gallery.
Lovely, calm space
I LOVE this channel. While the info is not needed, I do get curious to know the cost to rent or own these beautifully designed spaces.
oh I love this! It helps that the original features of the space are so simple and beautiful, but the reworking of it has made an exquisite little home and gallery and I am really impressed (and envious!)
Why do designers not think bathrooms need ACTUAL doors? She even had one but she used it as a table. Still, its a beautiful home and exactly what I expect from NTS 🙂
"yeah it used to be toilet door but we put sheer curtain instead" 😂😂
High ceilings can make a huge difference
