  • There are lots of Gold leaf variants but which ones are right for the job, and how much do they vary?

    This was a great topic and thanks for going back through the gilding process! There is always something new that I pick up. This was a worthwhile use of your grant support. What a beautiful piece you have now. Thanks for sharing Paul!

      Thanks Chip! I wasn’t sure what conclusions I’d reach but in the end I think it’s more about the updated gilding advice than the leaf itself

    The soap makes sense, because as a surfactant, it breaks the waters tension. For example, if a beetle fell into a bucket it would float on the surface for hours, if he falls into a soapy bucket, he drowns.

    I've been learning gilding by the videos of Joe. But when I tried to find him on sn I've found his son - and he told me Joe has been passed away. But what Joe has managed to do is absolutely priceless

    Okay, that's WAY cooler than the sample panel I made of different colours! LOL!! Re your gilding liquor; Miriam Ellner (The best verre églomisé artist I've ever seen out of New York) taught me to use 3 1/2 diamonds of gelatine to 275 ml of distilled water for a solid gild. If you want to be able to shade the gold back, use less. ALSO, she puts a small splash (like a tsp.) of denatured alcohol into the liquor. It helps it to evaporate more quickly and cleanly. Give it a try!

    Probably been asked a thousand times....where do you get your glue from? Have you ever tried glue on acrylic sheet? Really enjoying your content 😌

    • @happygilder
      @happygilder  Před rokem

      The glue I use for glass chipping is from Wrights of Lymm. It's called Pearl Glue. I've never tried it on acrylic but would be interested to know if it works :)

    I saw an amazing video with a gilder, the gold was actually 3 dimensional… please… how the heck did he do that? I have my own idea and I think it would last long enough to sell, but I just don’t know

    26:20 Hi, would you always need to back the 12ct white gold with enamel to prevent it from tarnishing over time? Thanks for making these videos - I've benefitted a great deal

    • @happygilder
      @happygilder  Před rokem +1

      You should always back up your gold to protect it. I use OneShot clear so that there's no risk of it being visible if there are holes in the gild.

    So much information in this video- thank you!
    Paul, how long between gold leaf applications; or just until it's thoroughly dry?
    Also, how long did you leave the acid etch on? Did you use mica? The effect is beautiful.

    • @happygilder
      @happygilder  Před rokem +3

      Thank you I’m really glad you enjoyed it!
      Once the leaf has gone to a mirror finish it’s fully dry and ready to burnish. I always put it in the radiator to speed it up. The acid and mica mix stays on for 25 mins. I use the coarsest mica flakes you can buy from LKAB minerals :)

    I love it. It such a great idea because trying to explain to people what the difference between the different leaf is impossible. I have seen people look at the fake gold leaf and say that stuff looks great what is it. What are you supposed to say to someone that likes fake gold. I like fake tits and they are really there. To each his own. You stuff is great.

      Omg!! LMAO!! I'll have to remember that the next time a client insists that fake gold is the real thing. I actually had a client aggressively argue with me that a sample he was showing me was real gold. sigh

    The soap is more likely to affect the surface tension of the water.

      Since I don't have a gold father pad which joe has sent me a link to. In the mean time I have adopted the makeup pad burnishing tip and much better than cotton ball I will. Funny he lives like 30 minutes from me.
