It’s not a crazy decision at all. We aren’t self employed, we both make excellent salaries respectively, and built the new, big house 6 years ago. We are now looking to downsize, use the profit to pay off my student loans and our cars, which is the only debt we have, and invest what’s left over/start taking our kids on adventures now that they’re old enough to remember the adventures. Excited for you!!

I am obsessed. So cute!! For the upstairs bath it looked like you could fit a small stand up shower where sink is and make vanity where tub is.

Congrats- I can see why you fell in love with the cottage. Super unique! If you could maybe just remove part of that boxwood hedge or maybe even have a local landscaping co familiar with them transplant portions of the boxwoods that would be amazing. It takes hundreds of years for those to get to the size yours are, so those are such a special accompaniment to the cottage 💜💜💜

We almost bought our “dream” home late last year but it was subject to sale of our house, which fell through. SUCH a blessing in disguise because I would’ve had to have been working to afford that place, and with the recent interest hikes it would’ve had to have been full time. Instead we just moved into a more modest home (but still everything we need) and I get to be home with my toddler ❤

That hidden side yard and mini barn and all the brush is literally the PERFECT place to raise goats! I wish I had that kind of a place for my goats. We have hardly any brush at all just flat land. Nigerian dwarfs are small goats and produce yummy milk that’s so nutritious!!
About 2 1/2 years ago my husband & I purchased a 1897 Folk Victorian home that we love, has the old floors, wood trim, glass stain windows & more. What a exciting project for you two!!

Please check everything for mold. There are gadgets to measure spore quantities. I used to live in an old house that was just rotting from the core and I have an old house aversion ever since.
Old places catch mold more than anything. And this stuff is a super health hazard, especially for children. I is often hidden behind wallpaper and the walls themselves, meaning invisible, but still very damaging.

Your willingness to be open & transparent is refreshing & appreciated. Would you mind sharing more about just daily living & finances while self-employed? Especially while having multiple children & needing things like childcare & health insurance etc?
Thank you! I try to keep it real as best I can. The kids are with us pretty much 24/7 so we don't pay for childcare (my mom takes them once a week tho which is such a huge help!) and we don't have health insurance anymore (the cost is absolutely bananas when you are self employed) we use samaritan ministries :)

Lol it really is a good size!! The farmhouse is seriously huge (way to much space for us) so it *feels* small but in reality it's a great amount of space!

We are making similar decisions in our life right now. We’ve had all the big and fancy and it hasn’t made our lives better. In creates a ‘need’ to continue wanting more and if you’re not careful to impress others. We’re downsizing, saving and investing in our future. And it feel so good and smart to do it. Most of our friends don’t understand. But it actually feel freeing! For us this life change came from just growing up some and maturing in our faith as well. Good luck to you!

Ufda this makes my head spin. Im 44 with 4 kids from 20 down to 10. We have done this twice. NEVER AGAIN!! It will be an adventure!!! It is charming for sure!!!

Lol I hear you! It's less than half the size of the farmhouse (which is huge and way more space than we could ever need) so it feels small...but in reality it's a great size!

As a lover of old quirky properties I can see the potential of your new home! If I was you I would create a bigger bathroom next to the master and only cut down the box hedges rather than remove them as they will frame the patio to keep the intimacy of the area but open it up enough so you can see the rest of the garden. Architecturally, it’s a cottage. Small, asymmetrical, the style of the roof, etc

Another idea, Bathroom upstairs....I wonder if you could flip the tub where sink is, move sink onto crooked wall, but maybe use a swing arm mirror or build out wall, put storage built in on right side ..might be nice to organize toiletries as kids get older?
Yes to this!! We were thinking of maybe flipping everything to the opposite side. That would def make it more functional I think

The goats are now living their best life at my friends farm! So happy I was able to find them a loving home & that we can still see them!

I'm honestly the worst at budgeting LOL we just generally try to only buy things we *really* need, only buy things with cash etc and that has worked out well for us

I think this is a good decision. I remember thinking once that I have no idea how you juggle it all. Like obviously everyone says no one is doing it all, but add in managing a farm on top of YL/YT, and it’s totally not sustainable. With financial freedom, you can pay a little bit extra for the fancy groceries and things you might think you will “miss” Definitely excited for this new chapter for your family!

In your middle tiny bathroom, wonder if you could install a slider door instead of swinging to gain floor space, maybe play with idea of open concept shower ( maybe with a 1/2 or whole) glasss/ Frosted? Where toilet is.. Walk in Shower. To let in light but still have privacy, Maybe a drain in floor ( no step in) to open it up? Put toilet where shower is... open floor more. Keep sink area, just make it " cue" add very large light up Mirror to agian reflect light/ outside?
Ah these are all such great ideas!! I needed you before we started renovating it lol! We basically kept the floorplan but did enlarge the shower a bit
@@BeccaBristow LOL.. thank you! We own a vintage house too. Yes! Always a door or window where you want a wall, or a wall where you need a room! But we love it anyways! Nothing is perfectly level or modern sized, but at least you can use human hands to fix things, and are not " trapped" by the box store overlords! 🤣🤣
Save the vintage sink from the top floor bathroom for the powder room on the bottom floor!

You should put a cookstove in the cabin. My cousin had this same setup growing up and we would bake bread and make stew in our pioneer woman dresses and it was just my little house on the prairie dream come true!!
Lol I hear you! For context, the farmhouse is HUGE. Way more space than we could ever use. The cottage is less than half the size so it *feels* small, although in reality is a really great size. And omg cookstove YESSS that sounds absolutely magical
I LOVE everything about this house but all those stairs with small children just send my anxiety through the roof!
There's a door on one set of stairs so we can close it off, and the other set has a gate already at the top. For the other entry points...that's why they make baby gates :) We have 2 big staircases in our house now and have had zero issues, personally not concerned about this at all. Most people have stairs in their house and also have children....lol

How will you deal with all the lead paint during renovation? Or are you not living in it until you're done? I only say that because my friend is pregnant with her 3rd and her kids just tested positive for high lead because of remodeling :(
I totally get it. My husband is fully into real estate investing as well. He has a full time job that is WFH and very flexible while I SAH. We run an airbnb out of our basement we have a long-term rental. Our house isnt huge but its 4k sq ft and its so much to clean and take care of with three kiddos (one a newborn). We joke constantly and talk seriously sometimes about finding a tiny house on land so we can use money to invest more. I love this house but if we found a smaller fixer upper on the right land, wed probably turn this into a large airbnb and move on. I love seeing others in this mindset! When the Lord works on your heart and prunes you, you have to listen. Ill be praying for your future 🙏
We also joke that 90% of the time, all 5 of us and our two dogs are in one room (the kitchen) anyway. Who needs 4k sqft 😂
Way to go you guys!!! I love this so much. And that's exactly where we were at - when the right (smaller) house comes along, we're going to jump on it. And I'm so glad we did! And it's the TRUTH we are literally always in the same 2 rooms and besides sleeping 80& of the house just sits there lol

If you can't shower " head" above old tub, I assume the hang your shower curtain around tub, you might still be able to get an old telephone style hand held faucet. Drain in that floor too.. kids and water, old pipes...been there.. lol

We've never had issues in the 2 previous old homes we've had...honestly so many new builds that go up super fast end up having mold issues nowadays. It seems there's no way to completely be safe from it
