    I’m 19 and I just bought my first car a few months ago. I got a used 2013 Jetta tdi premium and I’m in love with it. The interior is more luxurious than any other car I looked at at its price point. It only had 15k miles. I’ve read that tdi engines have lasted 300k-400k miles if you take care of it. Every time I get in my car I’m so proud. While my friends my age are out buying brand new luxury cars and struggling to pay them off I’m driving a car that’s pretty much just as nice af just a fraction of the cost. I was able to pay for it in full too. I love my little Jetta

    I got a 2014 2.5L 5-cyl Beetle brand new back then. It was very reliable. Got ride of it at 130k of owning it for 4 yrs. the only major issue I had was the ignition switch. Sometimes the key wouldn’t come out. Some days it would come out but other days took so long to take out. Another thing was the cv boots mines started to leak pretty early and I had to replace the head gasket. Other than that not bad.

As a car guy I have owned cars that get bad reps for reliability but as you said, if you maintain them then can be reliable. BTW I am looking for a new car in the next couple of years. Do you suggest a Jetta GLI? It will replace a 13 Dodge Charger SXT Plus(116,000 miles with no mechanical issues, only minor electronic issues)

It has the same horsepower as the Charger and it is fast.

    Yes they are; motor oil engine coolant, tranny fluid, and parts are somewhat expensive. however, if you are a DIYer, you can get a thing called VCDS (Vag-Com) from Ross Tech, and do the work yourself. VCDS, I think....stands for Volkswagen Car Diagnostic System. It’s a dealer grade kit/tool, that comes with/or came with a microsoft tablet, special OBD2 Ross Tech HEX CAN or CAN BUS cable, and the software disk, or download link that you purchase under license. In my case, I bought mine with a Microsoft Surface tablet with everything back in 2013. The tablet was rather laggy for me tho, so I bought a laptop. You can also program modules to do cool effects on your car like...turn off driving lights, and program your gauge cluster to do startup needle sweeps. This tool kit is handy for me to program replacement modules, monitor tranny fluid temp, and monitor special pulses and signals from certain ignition components or other electronics. Oh, and get familiar with your local junkyards if you need parts.... European car parts are expensive from stealerships, and auto parts stores compared to junkyards. I like getting my coil packs, fuel injectors, interior parts, lights, and modules from junkyards.

    One of the advantages of synthetic oil is the fact that you can go longer between oil changes but you're changing every 6 months so why not go to conventional oil? The last time I bought Shell 5x30 on sale, I paid $2 per quart. Probably closer to $3 per quart now, but still far cheaper than synthetic. If you believe synthetic lubricates better, this may be true but the improvement is so marginal, it's hard to measure. Engineers drove cars 500,000 miles before synthetic was invented. Also, I understand VW coolant (pink) at $26/gallon is unavoidable as I've had to buy if from the dealer as well, but can't this be purchased elsewhere?

    Great vid....As a multiple VW owner, I appreciate how you've illustrated the importance of doing that general maintenance. If the Germans are guilty of anything, it's complexity, and this carries over to their automobiles. The engineering in their cars is amazing, but complex and absolutely requires an owner to be "on top of things" as it pertains to maintenance. The single most important thing to do is to check the engine oil level frequently....not letting it go lower than the acceptable range. In addition, use excellent quality full-synthetic oil and a "top shelf" oil filter. I've owned three Jettas, my current being a 2022 Jetta GLI with the 2.0 TSI Turbo coupled to the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Forget what you hear about full-synthetic oils allowing greatly extended oil change intervals....not worth the risk. I use either Liqui Moly or Ravenol full-synthetic oil together with a VW/Audi oil filter every 5,000 miles......no exceptions or excuses. I've never experienced any mechanical breakdowns or problems and absolutely LOVE my GLI.

      Dealerships are to scam people lol. I am going to finance my car and avoid the dealership for oil changes or things that I can fix or take it somewhere else for cheap

    I’m looking at a 2014 Jetta with about 100k miles on it. If it’s mechanically sound right now, should I expect it to make it to 200k? Or is it likely it will give me problems soon?

    • @ejsgarage
      @ejsgarage  Před 3 lety +1

      100k cars will always have a problem, the parts are getting brittle at that mileage. It will make it to 200k but not without issues.

    100% agree with this video, VW's have always been great to me as long as they've been taken care of, and they are super simple to work on!

      Thank you very much for the positive feedback. That's awesome that you have taken care of your VW. The VW is one of the easiest car to work on because VW makes it very easy to people to do their own DIY work if they are willing to learn how to do it. What kind of VW do you drive?

      no problem! I try really hard to make them last and stay as smooth as possible haha, I currently have a 2013 Tiguan 2.0t 4Motion but i've also had:
      1999 Audi A6 (basically a passat)
      2000 Jetta TDI
      2001 Jetta 2.0
      2000 Beetle 2.0
      2003 Passat 2.8
      1999 Audi A4
      2006 Jetta TDI
      2009 Rabbit 2.5
      2003 Jetta GLI
      2002 Golf TDI
      I've had my share of VW maintenance over the years and have worked on all of these!

      "I try really hard to make them last and stay as smooth as possible" I love that :-) Good job Pierre! Wow you have a great collection of AUDI and VW! Is there any wisdom that you would like to share with us since you have driven a lot of AUDI and VW? :)

      @peterglauninger5425 Před 6 lety +5

      haha yeah i've dealt with my fare share of them, i find the best tools anyone could have with VW is a good set of torque bits, and a Vag Com cable (along with laptop...ect) because with Vag Com you can diagnose individual modules in the car and track the problem all the way down to the exact component that is having issues

      OMG That's is super helpful! I need to get myself the Vag Com cable. I really appreciate your wisdom there Piere :)

    Hey, man! I have a Tiguan just like yours, but it needs brakes replacement. Did you ever have to replace brakes on yours? Would you recommend taking it to the dealership and pay the big bucks, or take it to a more economic auto shop like Midas? Thanks in advance!

    • @ejsgarage
      @ejsgarage  Před 5 lety +1

      I am going to make a brake replacement video soon when the weather gets warmer. It is not that hard to do. You will save more money.

      Thank you very much for the kind words. I really like the Passat. I will buy the low mileage V6 version without the turbo because turbo is very expensive to replace.
