  • Size up, radio traffic and video from a fire in June.
    On 6/20/2024 just before 3:30pm,
Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to 533 Dakota SE for reports of a structure fire at a single story, single family dwelling. Engine 5 arrived on scene and reported a working fire with smoke showing from two sides of the structure. Engine 5 made entry through the front door and attempted an interior attack. They were unable to advance past the front room due to extreme heat. Crews changed from offensive to defensive tactics, meaning the fire was fought from the exterior of the structure utilizing an aerial master stream and handlines. The fire was brought under control in 35 minutes. The converted garage and built up rain roof provided challenges for crews when fighting this fire. Damage to the structure was extensive and was a total loss. AFR Fire Investigators were dispatched to determine the cause and origin of the fire. This is an open case.

What did E5 find that led them to switch to defensive ops?

@@jmWhyMe “extreme heat”. The garage had been converted to living space and they tried advancing but were unable to make the push into garage. The built up rain roof also made it difficult to access the fire in the void.
