Does that mean some grotesque abominable physical expression of that "love", sorry no! If not God, then nature is telling us such physical contact is dangerous, debilitating and sometimes deadly, should we not listen at least to what nature is telling us? We all have urges we ought not to act on, but anyone can say *"yeh, but I was born that way!"* If deniers say we're just semi-evolved apes and survival is the greatest singular instinct of any creature, then what survival advantage is afforded a species by homosexual relationships? I completely agree. Ryan definitely presented himself better, explaining his arguments clearly, not allowing himself to be baited. Piers and Suze were condescending, they appealed to emotions, appealed to the crowd to shout him down, and were generally far less persuasive. Purely in terms of debating style and effectiveness, I think Ryan won the exchange.
      Having said that, Ryan's arguments were flawed, he was deliberately evasive on crucial points, and he was there to make a speech, not engage in a conversation. I was not convinced by what he said, and don't agree with his position.

      HunchbackJack Good to see that even in disagreement, you can see the obvious problems with the supposed arguments mounted against Ryan. He was evasive, but I don't think he avoided the question of whether he opposed gay marriage as overtly as the presenter made it seem. Ryan's argument seemed to be that he agreed with whatever was made constitutional. However, I do get the feeling he had a bias, which he should simply have voiced. It's okay to have an opinion. What you do with that opinion is what counts in my books.

      I'm part of the LGBTQ community. However, I kept my mind clear to really hear what Anderson was saying.
      As much as Suze Orman is right about her argument, what Anderson were trying to say is those in the LGBTQ community should be able to form a union, but not call it a marriage.
      Since marriage was originally defined as a man and woman joining together, the LGBTQ community should create their own term/version of marriage.
      I think Anderson wants to be respected as a union with a woman (marriage) versus along with all the different types of unions put in one category.
      Oh well, it's 2019. And marriage is now two adults joining together, after Obama legalized gay/lesbian/etc marriage.

      I don't, because his arguments can be refuted quite easily.
      1) "Marriage" means the union of a man or a woman, by definition
      If we agree that gay people should have the same rights as straight people, then we can change the definition of marriage to accommodate them. The meaning of words evolve over time; there's absolutely no reason to use semantics to deny people rights.
      2) "Marriage" is an institution to foster the raising of children
      If this were a legitimate reason to prevent gay people from the right to marriage, then people who were unable, unwilling, or inept at raising children would also be denied marriage. People who had children who needed caring for would be prevented from getting divorced.
      This also assumes (although it's never stated) that any gay couple couldn't possibly be as nurturing to children as any straight couple - regardless of how loving the gay parents are or how abusive the straight parents.
      3) "People should vote on this issue"
      Actually, no. This is a human rights issue. Just as the Federal Government wouldn't permit any city, county or state to outlaw mixed-race marriages, so we shouldn't make the right to marriage a matter of local opinion. It is entirely appropriate that the Supreme Court rule on this issue.

      HunchbackJack Dude, I think he is simply trying to explain how he defines marriage. Like he said early on, he isn't against it. He simply views marriage as the union between man and woman so that a child can be raised and be taken cared for. He says that the issue is how people define marriage.
      That is why he implied "people should vote on this issue". It is not on whether there should be gay marriage or not, but people (as a society) should agree on how marriage should be defined.
      Sorry, not try to argue with you but I just think you misunderstood on what he was saying.

    • @HunchbackJack
      @HunchbackJack Před 10 lety

      Mau Mauster I think Ryan is playing a shell game with words. He is implying that gay people shouldn't get married *because* marriage is between a man and a woman, by definition. He doesn't come out and say that, but the inference is clear, and understood by anyone who agrees with him.
      The reason the word is so important to Christians is because they consider marriage to be an act of God, not of man. "What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate", etc. So they don't want the institution of marriage "sullied" by something they consider offensive to God.
      But Christians like Ryan don't say that, because religious belief alone isn't a valid justification for denying people equal rights under the law. So he tries to pass it off as a question of semantics rather than a matter of human rights.

    To my Black and Colored Brothers;
    "By law and official policy Gays have not been segregated in Schools, buses, restaurants, housing, voting rights etc.
    Gays have been victims of individual attackers who are punishable for their crimes against gays.
    Offenses against blacks were authorized by state action, state laws, and official policy.
    It's very misleading to compare Gay rights to Civil Rights of black people.
    The point is that Gays are already enjoying Government Protection through Laws that punishes those who attack gays.
    On the other hand, back in the days the Government and the Laws were not protecting Blacks, but in fact such law and government actions became the basis for discriminating blacks.
    So the LGBT's attempt at elevating the status of Gay causes to that of the Blacks civil rights causes is a dishonest and unethical tactic."

USA isn't a bubble, foreign affairs do affect it's policies.
      The whole purpose of comparing homosexuality and race in terms of equality is to highlight how discrimination has manifested itself beforehand and how similar the justifications of these views are. Undermining it by saying 'who had it worse' trivialises equal rights as some stupid competition and whoever had the hardest time should be more entitled to equal rights than those who didn't.

      Jonathan Gardner I am really sorry to inform you that your statements are incorrect.
      1.- "Marriage has always been since the beginning of time between man and woman" . The union between 2 people goes way beyond the modern era so we don't have evidence that it has always been between man and woman. It wasn't until 1563 that the sacramental nature of marriage was written into canon law, it was in the 8th century when the catholic church gained power and the sacrament of marriage was stablished, as a matter of fact, polygamy was common throughout history, Jacob, Salomon, Abraham, king David had more than one wife.
      2.- "The result of marriage produces life ". Although this statement is true, the purpose of marriage was not always to produce life, early marriage was seen as a strategic alliance between families, with the youngsters having no saying in the matter, sometimes, parents married one child to the spirit of a deceased child to strengthen the bonds between the 2 families. In other cases, the purpose of marriage was to keep strong alliances within the family, it has been documented that the majority of all marriages throughout history were between first and second cousins without their consent.
      3.- "the PRINCIPLE can be used for those who are pedophiles because of the same mental condition. And this is why today they want their equal rights too." You can not compare pedophiles marriage with gay marriage, apples and oranges, gay marriage can not open the door to pedophiles to get marry since kids are not and never will be consenting adults.

      Matrimony is the contractual union of a man with one or more women, primarily for the purpose of PROCREATION and child-rearing. In other words, “marriage” is simply a term given to the concept of human mating mores, as human being mating customs are far more complex than those of non-human animals. However, no matter the complexity of human marriage rites, rituals, and connubial customs, one can never deny the blatantly-obvious fact that “marriage” is essentially a word that we have given to mating conventions of the Homo sapiens species.

      @INTJerk Před 7 lety +6

      When did this become a separation of church and state issue? As pointed out by Dr. Anderson, all of civilization (regardless of religion) recognized marriage as a union of man and woman before the year 2000. It is much more to do with common sense and biology.

    • @tanagranger1919
      @tanagranger1919 Před 7 lety +2

      Same-sex marriage has existed throughout history, there's plenty of evidence that shows this. Google "Same-Sex Marriage and the Construction of Family: An Historical Perspective" and read the first PDF, written by Richard Ante, for a brief look at the historical evidence.
      Regardless of the historical or religious legitimacy of marriage, the moment marriage became part of law, it was separated from religion and made entirely civil. America was founded on the principles of separation of church and state, the term was coined by Thomas Jefferson himself. The First Amendment of the Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Marriage is a legal institution in American civil law, as such any religious definitions or connotations are rendered irrelevant. From a historical and social perspective, same-sex marriage has always existed. From an ethical and moral perspective, marriage equality for all and free access to marriage for all American citizens, should be a reality.

    • @INTJerk
      @INTJerk Před 7 lety +8

      Stop bringing up religion. This has NOTHING to do with religion. One does not have to be a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Hindu, etc...to know that the marriage institution is just a reflection of human biology. Only through the sexual complimentary bond of male and female can a life be created. Marriage, regardless of any obscure propaganda you can find, represents the brick of society : the foundation of the family unit.
      What is wrong by simply recognizing this fact of uniqueness and then building an institution that promotes this type of engagement for the betterment of society? What does two men shacking up have to do with bringing forth the next generation, and why in the world would the government care to get involved? If marriage is only about love and has nothing to do with children, then as Dr. Anderson says, why not make the throuple qualify for marriage? Why not let the Mormon's practice polygamy legally? What principle allows for same-sex marriage but denies other arrangements from being legally recognized, apart from sheer bias? Once you take something and distort the definition, it opens the door for all kinds of lunacy. So many questions arise from same-sex marriage, one needs to be extremely short-sighted not to recognize the consequences.
      Look at a dictionary before the year 2000 and you will see that marriage by definition is the union of male and female. So based on the inception and understanding of what marriage actually is, there was NO inequality against the gay community. All gays were permitted to marry, but...they simply were not looking for marriage. Asking why two men should not allow to marry is like asking someone why they cannot draw a four sided triangle. Meaningless question.
      Ethics and morals? I find it unethical that the LGBT community think they can bully society into altering the meaning of marriage and have business owners, who object based on conscience, be forced into providing services that participate in (by their judgment) immoral ceremonies.
      "access to marriage for all American citizens, should be a reality."
      You mean all American citizens should be able to decide for themselves what marriage means, and then force the government into legalizing it. To me marriage is just the bond between two people in a living arrangement. I want to marry my sister. Please grant me my "equality". Dumb.

      Therefore, it is simply nonsensical (and downright evil) to ascribe matrimony to homosexual unions!
