    Excellent video! I am soon to be doing this exact job on my HDJ81 80 series. Looks like the radiator is exactly the same….tranny fluid pipes and all. I am also going to add an aux tranny fluid cooler that is seen on US market FJ80/FZJ80s. I will no doubt be referencing this video during the job. It looks pretty straightforward. Thank you for posting.

      For most of our jobs, we learn as we go. Sometimes things work out smooth and other times not so much. It's part of the deal with auto mechanics. I wouldn't label this vehicle a pain in the ass but it's definitely easier to replace a radiator on a 3rd Gen 4runner. FJ80 Land Cruisers are awesome rigs and I would love to own one if they weren't so damn expensive right now.

    Awesome guide mate. I have to do a friends rad. at their place and I now know exactly what tools to take! One thing though, in hindsight would you say it would've been easier to leave the belts tensioned up and use that resistance to undo the fan nuts/studs? You'd also save time by not messing with the alternator.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před 2 lety

    Good tutorial, those alloy radiators develop a leak when the boiling water from overheating is so imense that the plastic tank swells and when cooled back down after boiling dry, the plastic returns to it's normal shape, but the alloy does not and the seal is lost. My only constructive critisisms are about the differing audio levels and that removing or replacing belts are the easiest by far done over the edge of the largest pulley.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment. I think the only way we could normalize the audio is if I wear a mic somewhere on my body. We might go to something that one day

    Maybe I am missing somethin, but what is the purpose of removing the tension of the belts? Can't the fan and shroud be taken out without that step?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před měsícem

      Getting the belts de-tensioned helps get the fan clutch off and back on. If you want to skip this step, let us know how it works out for you. I was simply following the instructions in the factory service manual. Sometimes they do suggest unnecessary steps.

    Hello Timmy Great Video! I had an unrelated question and was wondering if you could offer a solution for my 80. Ive purchases a 2 inch level off metal tech and was told I would also need to purchase an extended trac bar because if I didn’t my axle would be off centered. Again amazing video love watching them I learn a lot. Cheers!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před 3 lety +1

      As you lift the suspension, the arm which is attached to the frame and rear axle will cause it to drag the rearend over a little because the arm is a fixed length. By getting a longer bar, you push the rear end back to center. Is it totally necessary? That's debatable. I have the rear of my 2000 4runner lifted 2 inches and I haven't gotten a different panhard bar or welded in lift or drop brackets to compensate for the lift.

    • @grey4492
      @grey4492 Před 3 lety

      @@TimmyTheToolman Thank you so much for the reply .It is for the lift. Just 2in metal “spacers” to level the front of the car out make it look a little better. So I took it to a shop and they said if the were to put the level on my axle would be off centered and told me for it to work I would need a new trac bar.

    Hey, Tim. Thank you so much for this video. I'm planning on doing an overhaul of my cooling system, basically this plus PHH, water pump and thermostat. I am not sure what color coolant the previous owner used so I want to make sure I flush it out really well in preparation for the red coolant. Do you have any tips for that? And I'm assuming I should flush out my system using all the old parts and once I deem it clean, install all the new components? Thank you in advance.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před 2 lety +1

      You can use this flush video: czcams.com/video/oQsxmi-CNng/video.html It's basically a series of filling the system with distilled water, running the engine, draining it out and repeating until what comes out looks really clear.
      Yeah, I would flush the system out with the old parts and then install the new parts.
      You're welcome and good luck with the work.

    Hey Timmy, how long did this job take. I have my new radiator. Top of existing radiator is all brown. I want to do the job before taking a 6-7 hour drive to the mountains. Trying to gauge how much time it will take. Will probably do the oil pump cover and front main seal while the radiator is out. By the way, do you have vids on oil pump cover and front main seal? Hmm, I'll check. If no video, have you done this job? If so, how much time did it take. Thanks.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před 4 měsíci

      It's hard for me to gauge the time necessary for a job because filming makes the job take longer, and I'm also not timing myself. If I had to guess, I'd say around 3 hours of uninterrupted time to swap out the radiator. I have never done the oil pump cover and front main seal.
