  • Welcome to the JS Blak box 3 Review!
    The Blak box 3 that I’ve been riding is the stock 5’9 x 19 5/8 x 2 7/16 - 29.9L.
    I’ve been surfing the Blak box 3 for a while now across a variety of conditions, and it’s been an epic board to handle just about anything local beach breaks will throw at it. From 1ft, to overhead the board perform well and feels like it’s just as happy groveling in junk as it is in 4ft tubes.
    I was speaking to someone about the Blak box 3 being fast, and it wasn’t the speed of the board that impressed me, but it was the boards flow. The Blak box 3 has amazing flow, linking sections together and getting across flat sections with ease, making surfing easy and enjoyable.
    The Blak box 3 has a 5 fin option, but I preferred the board as a quad, it felt much too tight as a quad. The Blak box 3 I had was FCS and I was really feeling the Julian Wilson AirCore in large by FCS in this board.
    From www.jsindustries.com;
    Much loved by surfers around the world for the last eight years, we’ve set out to build a new board that does justice to the famous Blak Box DNA, which has always brought fun yet still exciting surfing to good, average and even terrible waves.
    The success of our Monsta Box and Air 17X at the refined end of the X Series prompted JS to re-design our Blak Box to be even more suited to weak waves and surfers who don’t get their ideal choice of conditions day in, day out. It’s user-friendly, and it’s a must have to make the most of whatever window you have to get in the water each week.
    BLAK BOX 3 performs best in waves that are fat and crumbly but goes equally well when its clean and hollow. Best wave height is between 0 and 4 feet. BLAK BOX 3 is fast, manoeuvrable and super rippable! It's perfect in average conditions when most high performance boards are struggling.
    An overall low to flat rocker is the perfect all-round rocker creating speed and glide in small to average conditions.
    Blak Box 3 has medium to low rails, reducing catch and increasing speed in and out of choppy or soft sections.

    I have a 6.0 swallow (I'm fit 5'11", 80kg). after a week of breaking it in, this board goes well in almost anything and picks up almost anything. Got caught out in a 6ft+ day without my go-to for more powerful stuff and it handled it well - my theory is the swallow gave it a bit more rail than a rounded square so no dodgy moments bottom turning into a bit of overhead suck. its the most sensible board I've had for many years in very good surf 2-5ft surf with the ability to pick up waves in slop and make a grovel session worth it. I'd probably prefer the swallow over the squash or at least be more confident in it for more bowly sucky stuff but thats just personal pref...

    Craig, would you say the wide point is forward on this board? JS says they moved it forward but it doesn't look like say a Pyzel Phantom or a fishy board where it is obviously forward. I don't do well with those type boards but I like the look of this one. Thank you.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  Před 5 lety

      rippert hey! Yes it is forward, but it doesn’t hold the width and the nose isn’t overly full/wide as it comes in enough to keep you out of trouble! I haven’t surfed the phantom so I couldn’t comment, but in the JS range you are probably talking about a nose like what is on the Nitro model which becomes much fuller and holds that width through the nose.

    • @rippert5917
      @rippert5917 Před 5 lety

      Thanks Craig. No local shops have one so I was curious. Good comparison with the Nitro and I can assume not nearly as wide as the Flying Pony. I'm going to order one, the volume as you said works perfectly for me in a shorter package 5'8" for my weight and height. Keep it up brother.

I have a chumlee and am thinking about adding or replacing with a CI RW or a JS BB3 in terms of low end how do these 3 boards compare? Looking to be mostly riding in the 1-3ft range (up to head) but have a little gap at the moment between the CL and my HP shortboard where I could be having more fun! Happy to keep the CL for real junk, which board out of the other two would match up best. Thanks in advance.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  Před 5 lety

      Jerseywake between the RW and the BB3 I’d say the BB3. I liked the RW, but I liked it in decent surf, either 3ft+, or with a bit of push. The BB3 seems to work everywhere, and if you really want it to grovel, I’d say the Hyfi/epoxy would be mental!
      Keep that Chumlee for the small surf and junk, that things mental for keeping people in the water!

    Hey man! Love your rewiews!
    I’m 6’3 and about 88-90 kgs like yourself and I’ve recently bumped my volume up from 30 to 32 and couldn’t be happier. After seeing some footage of myself after I increased my volume a bit I realised my turns, especially when more carving orientated once just look way better. What I’ve noticed in your reviews, your boards looks really good in the snappier turns but I feel like when you’re carving you lose some speed through the last 1/3 of the turn - which happened to me as well, but going up to 32 litres on my more small wave performance oriented boards (like my new black box 3) seemed to fix. Wondering if you have tried some boards in that volume range - and if not or anyhow it could be really interesting to see you surf a board like the black box in 2 different dimensions? So like this one in 29 and then one with 2-3 litres more
    Cheers mate!

      Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, bigger boards (30L+) feel too big and bulky, sure they peddle great, but that's where the benefits stop for me. 18 Months ago I was riding 28 -28.5L, and I've moved to 29.5 - 30L, and that feels good! I typically ride a 24.5 liter board, occasionally 25 liters so think 24.5 for the MonstaBox. Looking at getting this in hyfi and am torn between the 5'6 and 5'7. The 5'6 is 24.6 liters and the 5'7 is 26.1 liters so quite a big jump. Conventional wisdom seems to be to size up for small wave boards but 26 liters seems a bit big. Thoughts?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  Před 5 lety

      Ben Costantini hey! Both great boards, and would be good if you want something that’s kind of performance for average Sydney waves. The Beach Buggy 2 is gonna be a bit longer and give you more rail (I rode a 5’11), and is a bit more pulled up through the nose, holding most of its volume/width in the tail under your back foot which I really enjoyed! The BB3 is a shorter and rounder offering, fuller nose and front end, and at 5’9 a much shorter tail line. Both boards have similar rockers which are fairly flat and would be both great for Sydney waves!

      Probably won't do BB2 as it's an old model, and I don't think it's actually available anymore...

    Surfing well mate, this board looks fun!
    I think I'm about to get either this in a swallow or a wave slave.. would there be much difference in drive/bottom turns/carves between them?
    Cheers

      @karljakobsson2687 Před 5 lety +2

      t money I have both and love both but there is some overlap. If I had to pick one I’d go with bb3 as it’s a bit more versatile and closer to a regular hpsb. Know Craig says in the video the bb3 tail is big but in comparison Wave slaves tail is f***n massive and much thicker in the same dims/volume. The wave slave has a low but somehow much longer and different nose rocker too. Also forgot to say my bb3 is squash tail so not sure how the swallow compares.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  Před 5 lety +1

      t money I don’t think there would be huge difference between the squash and swallow in the BB3, maybe a little more bite in the tail edge through turns etc.
      The Wave Slave has a much bigger back end, and an overall fuller outline, but I’d say in the 1-3ft wave range they surf similarly, but the BB3 would handle much more in the upper scale (3ft+).

      @@TheSurfboardGuide Thanks, much appreciated! It's too hard to pick boards, now I'm thinking about a monstabox.. could you tell me how much harder they are to paddle/ how they'd manage 2ft slop... Looking for that average all rounder for an average surfer on the east coast

      @@tmoney4191 I live on the sunshine coast and had the monstabox hyfi as my last everyday board and now have the BB3 swallow. Same volume but i was able to drop 2 inches with the bb3 so i found it fit better in the pocket of the wave on those small days where you are still trying to push through turns. Both boards can grovel in waist high slop but in my opinion the bb3 is about 15% less work to get through gutters and fat sections. BB3 hasnt let me down on 4ft days and if it gets any bigger then its usually time to bust out the HP shorty. Hope this was helpful

      Hey I have many boards, FEVER included and Blakbox 2 not the 3. different boards mate. Fever all rounder more performance so works better with some work or push. I used the BB2 in OZ for small days 1-3F. Flater rocker, wider, shorter than FEVER. Easy and fun board. If you wanna rip on 2-8F waves fever, 1-5F go with BB2 or get both for good quiver :D (see the FEVER as an AIR 17ish)

      @@maxdrewe9149 With the FEVER you'll feel it right away, meaning you like it or not. Since it's a BB3 review I don't want to push you to go FEVER but do what you feel. JS BlakBox2 is a really easy going and fun board. BB3 should be the same. You can get a lot of "performance" from it too. Depends of your daily waves. As I said both can be a great quiver. And JS glass is a must. CI more fragile from my experience ;-)
