Journey to find the famous NewCastle

NewCastle was established by the British as a military center in 1840. It is now used as a training camp for Soilders and recruits of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). The location, in the Blue Mountains National Park, was chosen by Mayor General Sir William Gomm, the lieutenant governor of Jamaica at the time , who noted that yellow fever, a major cause of death among British troops. NewCastle is about 10-15 degrees cooler than most of the island and there’s is sometimes snow and ice in the higher elevations in the winter months.

Used to vacation in Newcastle years ago. Can’t understand the Jamaican patois now.
We stayed at a lovely bungalow with a gorgeous flower and fruit garden. The strawberries were like the ones tiday. We picked them and they had a lovely fresh
Smell before eating. Also had peaches and other lovely fruit that in the kingston area was far too hot for lovely plants, such as dahlias. The Jamaican accent is like a foreign language now! Last time there was 1991. Then went to other West Indian Islands as crime was rampant in tourist resorts in Jamaica. St Lucia, St Kitts and St Croix were lovely and safer. That was in the early 2000’s. Thanks for the delicious strawberries.
