- Hello and welcome to Steel Picking! In this video, we will continue our study of the fret board. We will be going from a major to a minor chord. I use C to C minor for this example.

I agree you’re the best teacher I’ve found on here and you go at a good pace. This was my pandemic project to honor my late brother and cousin, both gone and steel pickers in Ireland. I don’t know how they learned without the internet but they achieved a great level of skill.

Hi Aaron, Not sure if all guitars have this change but mine has a tunable split on the knee lever that lowers string 6 a full step. If I lower 6 and then add the B pedal that results in a minor on the same fret position. So for me on 8 with no pedals it’s a C. RKL and B pedal is Cm. Can be useful.

Yes, I'm very interested in playing pedal steel. Unfortunately it's quite hard and expensive to get one in Brazil. So I started following some lessons and performances and seaching for some information about some manufacturers. Regards and thanks for the feedback, Aaron.

That's very helpful, thank you! But for my setup what you call F lever for me it's D lever (Left Knee pushing to the Right on my Emmons standard E9th setup, it would be the 2nd knee lever from le left).
Davide, that is one of the problems we face trying to learn and teach for the steel. There seems to be so many variations on the set up. It is not just the "Day" and "Emmons" set up anymore. I find that with a lot of the students I teach. We just have to work around what we have. I hope you can make it work out for you.

In the beginning of this lessons you mentioned how a
C F G..progression would go to a Fm ...?But then you showed C - Cm changes.Can you talk of the 4 chord going from maj.- minor in a progression?
Sorry for the confusion, just think of it as a way to see were you can get a minor voicing or chord. In this case it happens to be a Cmin. The 4 minor I am talking about in the opening is just one example of a progression that has a minor in it. 1, 4, 4min, 5, 1. C, F, Fmin, G, C .Hope this helps.

Great lesson. How do you maintain the sustain for so long without the sound fading away? I'm fairly new at pedal steel
You can work with your volume pedal and vibrato on your bar. Try using a little more volume on your amp. As your notes die out you have the ability to help the sustain by adding more volume with your volume pedal. Watch my bar hand and you will notice I move it slightly from side to side { vibrato} when I get to the fret I am going to . This helps the notes sustain. I do a lot of these things from habit so it is sometimes hard to put them into words. Try these two things first and let me know. Hope this helps!

I appreciate that, been trying it, but I keep fluctuating the volume so it's uneven....not smooth

3rd fret, a&b down, engage vertical lever?
Hey Stephen not real sure what you are asking? Could you restate your question for me thanks. My vertical lowers 5 and 10 a 1/2 also what string group are you playing. Thanks, Aaron
Stephen went to my guitar and worked on what I thought you were suggesting and you are correct. If your guitar has a compensator on it that will allow you to go from open C# with the A pedal down to C with A pedal and vertical B to Bb together and be true that would work. If you play this at the 3rd fret you achieve a C minor with group 5,6,8, 3rd fret A,B, and vertical down. Also you could play 5.,6,8, at the 3rd fret with A& B down that is a "C" chord than same group at the 3rd keep B down and 1/2 pedal the A pedal that would give you the C minor. I don't know if my brain is circuited closer to that of a human fly, but I can't watch this video slower than 1.75x speed... anyone else? It's just SOOOOO SLOOWWWWWWWWW
Andrew, some of the older vids are learning curves for me. My main focus is to brake it down for beginners. I do not know what the skill level is of most viewers so I make the videos more geared toward a beginner. And if 1.75 x will help skip you to the part of the video you want to learn faster go for it. That sounds like an good idea.

@@SteelPicking Totally!! And I wasn't trying to sound harsh, in fact you seem to have grasped exactly what I meant. I'm mostly just an impatient guy hahaha, school was always boring for me for that reason. So even tho I can't understand most of your words that fast, I can hear your playing quicker which i guess is a nice effect for an "overview" vibe.
