SO, if you didn't know, we've been going through SKZ discography in order over at our patreon page, and we recently got to the Go-Live era, where we got to react to the Single album they released right before - TOP.
We reacted to four different videos for TOP, had a massive discussion about the mix, the sound, the music, and moved on to SLUMP, where we reacted to the Korean lyrics video and the Japanese version performed on First Take (and more to come). This First Take video was a HUGE find for us - we loved the style, the concept, and most of all, the performance from SKZ.
We are hyped to check out the English version, as well as other performance videos to further discuss the track and prep ourselves for the Go-Live album :D.

They were the first Korean group to be invited to First Take! I love it and look forward to seeing them go again
I started follow their journey after i heard Slump in the first take.. I thought that they are japanese group
This song is way too short!! I adore their vocals on this and Bang Chan’s are beautiful!!! One of my favourite songs from them. So glad you did this. 🖤
I watch their THE FIRST TAKE performances time to time because i'm in live with them. Btw thank you to THE FIRST TAKE CZcams Channel for inviting Stray Kids to their channel as first Kpop group. I learned that that channel always post Japanese songs and artists that time and when Skz announced to be there some people dislike the video before it aired (in premiere if i'm not wrong) because some of them had prejudgment for kpop idols. And I heard that when video published some people took their dislikes back because they weren't expecting this at all. This was a Japanese song but then they sang a Korean song (Mixtape: OH) on this channel as well (they were first).
Slump is the song that made me stan Skz!!! it's probably still my favourite... though having favourites is like damn near impossible because they're all so good. But ahhhhh my love for Slump ❤❤❤

Fun fact, there was actually no post done on that recording. Hence the need for the mixers. Thats why they were so bloody nervous. Lol First Take is all about the fact they do not edit, and whats recorded is whats recorded, that is the final product.
They have indeed had performances that were less than steller on that show. It's one of the last few "live performance" shows out there. With that being said, there is no rule against a mixer and utilizing it's abilities to individually mix their vocals. So as to help them more accurately match one anothers individual results, as a group. They were preset prior to the performance.
Sure, there was, without a doubt, still a very real risk when it came to whether or not everyone would perform the exact way they needed to in order to have all the vocalists match up the way they did. As I believe it was primarily due to just how unique the maknes are in particular, resulting in the majority of the slightly more noticeable mixing being centered on them.
After all, Seungmin is a baritone, while IN has a very specific forward placed quality to his voice thst would have otherwised caused him to stand out a bit too much from the others. So the whole purpose here, was two fold really. With the first, which was without a doubt of the hightest priority for them... to basically negate some of that trademark uniqueness of the groups vocalists.
As for the rappers, their mixing specifications had the effect/ result of their voices having any fluctuation all but hourred, which added extra umph to give them that almost metallic quality, allowing their voices to cut through the way they needed to. Unfortunately, BangChan was the one member playing on both teams, so he had to have his set for either the vocalists or the rappers settings. And low and behold, you truly cannot tell witch he went with. Haha.
At the end of the day, however... They really did only did have those mixers to help them. Notnonly would they be breaking every rule of the show by giving them post, they would have been doing so for the very first kpop group to ever perform there, and that would have not only made the studio look like they already favored them above the other artists, it would have really pissed off their loyal fanbase.
Moreover, they certainly wouldnt have gone through all the trouble of utilizing the mixers and so clearly playing all effects within the active live recording of the song, if they were just going to turn around and do post whilst saying they didnt. Not only would it have been highly hypocritical, but also redundent. And that redundancy, SPECIALLY had they implemented actual autotune in TOP of the effects of the the live mixers, then it would have resulted in a final product much like the original.
However, the original was an esthetic choice made some time AFTER the song was originally created. (As this was a song that Han wrote about his personal struggles. Which they just happened to love. However the final version simply fit the esthetic they were aiming for the best.)Meanwhile, from what the kids have said, this is basically the original version. Created with the ability to oerform it live in mind.
The condenser mics and mixers were simply their effort to make this live performance both estheticly akin the 'TOG' version whilst, of course, playing by the standards that are rigorously upheld and therefore enforced by studio. All of which is precisely why, at the end of the performance while BangChan was being shown, he looked quite truly taken aback and rather impressed by what they had just done.

I only liked this song, not loved it, but after listening to The First Take version, it instantly became one of my top 3 favorite Japanese songs of SKZ
I must have watched this before... but maybe I've listened to it but not watched the video because I feel like I'm discovering who sings those falsettos. Of course one was Lee Know, but Seungmin and I.N too, and Bang Chan!!! I'm in awe once more.
