    Thanks for sharing!!Do you feed the scoby hotel with sweet tea and how often?Thank you!

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 3 lety +2

      I usually don't have to feed it unless I take a break from brewing on a regular basis because when I'm brewing I'm constantly adding and removing new tea and scobies. When I take an extended break I feed the hotel room temperature sweet tea once every 3 or so months.

    Oh, I'm surprised you put them next to light. I thought they had to be in a darken space to grow...?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 4 lety +1

      Doesn't have to be dark but I did it for warmth. My kitchen is super chilly in the winter. I actually don't do this anymore.

      They need to be out of natural light, not kitchen lights.

    Thanks for sharing. What does the thing you cover the jar with called?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 3 lety +1

      I use a coffee filter and rubber band to cover the jar. It lets the scoby's breath without letting in dust or bugs

    One of these days I'll get brave enough to try this.

    Oh is the red vein stuff the starter? Of the mother?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před rokem

      The mother is the well formed scoby that produces the baby scoby on a first ferment. That baby scoby will grow over time and become its own mother

    Will u use those 17 scobies to make kombucha?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 5 lety

      I may find some other things to use them for. I've seen some fun recipes that I haven't had the opportunity to try out yet

  • @eniidgoodman9258
    @eniidgoodman9258 Před 4 lety

    Do the scobies need to be refrigerated?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 4 lety +3

      That's a great question. Scoby actually prefer room temperature. Around 70 degrees Fahrenheit or so. Cold from a refrigerator isn't great for them and could kill your scoby if in there for too long

  • @ms.evegene
    @ms.evegene Před rokem

    Why does mine have red vein things on it?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před rokem

      The stringy brownish red bits are strings of yeast which are essential to your scoby

  • @ms.evegene

    I want a new scoby plz

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před rokem +2

      You can buy scobys online, at farmers markets or locally from people who have extras. You can also grow your own using store bought organic kombucha that is unflavored and unfiltered. Hope that helps 😊

  • @Arek.Arkadiusz
    @Arek.Arkadiusz Před rokem

    Can you make a new SCOBY in a hotel?

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před rokem

      Yes! Every time you brew your kombucha the mother scoby should produce a little baby scoby, reserve a cup of that liquid and the scobies and then brew a new batch that you don't plan to second ferment and just let them live in a large jar with the tea until you're ready to use the scoby again then you always have plenty of starter tea as well

    My hands stink so bad after I handle my scobies 😅

  • @irishvendy
    @irishvendy Před 3 lety +1

    scoby should not come into contact with a metal. I would not wear a ring while handling a scoby or any other food, actually

    • @HomesteadDreaming
      @HomesteadDreaming  Před 3 lety +4

      😅 you know, that's something I never thought of. I KNOW not to use any type of metal with my scoby but totally didn't even think of the fact that I have metal on my fingers.

    • @irishvendy
      @irishvendy Před 3 lety

      @@HomesteadDreaming :) generally for me, it doesnt even feel comfortable to have anything on my fingers when cooking :D
      aynaway, thanks for usefull video :)

      Food grade stainless steel is very much fine, utensils for the kitchen can definitely be used. But the ring could be a minus :D
