    Here's the link to Timo's swanky new phone AGM G2 Guardian
    www.agmmobile....
    and here's the discount code JOSNAGM which gets you 8% off + charging dock + tempered film :)
    After destroying multiple phones in a short space of time during the refit, Timo has finally found his perfect indestructible phone. It not only has a 100 lumens torch, a 3.5 watt speaker, is drop and dust proof and can survive half an hour underwater, but the coolest thing is the infrared night vision and thermal camera which we’ll surely be showing you more of in future videos. Thanks to this phone we managed to find where we lost 1 volt in heat resistance

    Finally after a 2 year refit turning our Open 60 into a fast family cruiser - it’s time to head outside of the reef here in Fiji and test her in some big waves.
    Fiji is surrounded by the largest coral reef system in the south pacific, which as well as providing some great diving, snorkelling and some of the world’s most famous surf breaks - also offers more sailors some more protection from waves and some smooth sailing in a giant lagoon. Especially on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu around the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands which is where we’ve been since we re-launched as this western side of Fiji is also protected from the easterly trade winds. So this trip out of the reef to sail along Fiji’s southern coastline was an important test sail for NV after our big refit before embarking upon our first ocean passage.
    But our smiles were short lived - as before we’d made it out of the reef pass, our engine died.
    Our engine is an old Volvo which we’d overhauled during our refit- taking it out of the boat, and after a bad compression test, opened up and replaced valves and seals, sandblasting and repainting. However since being back in the water, other parts had been playing up and in particular we’d been leaking a lot of oil.
    So after all this hassle with the engine over the last few weeks, you can imagine our disappointment when it died on us - luckily this was short lived as it was a broken fuel pipe which Timo cut and re-attached.
    We made it out through the reef pass in darkness and after a successful first night at sea and we arrived at our destination shortly before lunch - a bay called Natandola - well known for it’s Surf breaks - which we witnessed crashing on either side of us as we entered... a little bit nerve wrecking given the recent reliability of our engine…
    But it was on the way home that the real fun started...
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
    We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
    Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
    Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

    You guys and your boat need a new main. I suggest a square top. Then you can do 18 knots upwind. And.....sailing without crew? Views on that?

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Před rokem +1

      Hey Gert yes we’d love a square top - we need the water ballast installed to go really well upwind ideally. For sailing without crew for sure we’d push less and be more careful. We’ve got a good small Dacron staysail

    Peak speeds are fun, and I guess with more wind she would be in the 20's. I've sailed a similar boat (with water balast) under white sails at a steady 20 knots in the Solent. The question is can she sail and track comfortably on auto pilot under reduced sail. For passage making, that's what you want, crew don't need to be at the helm, more comfortable, less wear and tear and, much reduced risk of breakages. More time to do maintenance, look for chafe as you go.

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Před rokem +1

      Yes agreed! Also with a full main and water ballast installed. But yes she sails very well with the autopilot - tho we still often prefer to steer for the hell of it - plus power is more the issue for the autopilot atm, we have to run the generator, so we usually do a mix

Nah not particularly noisy down below at all - no more so than other boats (so far). Is Fal Falmouth? We’d love to call in there on our way back! Depends a bit which way home we go I guess… we’ve still not 100% decided…

      @@SailingNV That was without the water ballast system? Oh boy, so she’s probably still only able to get powered up about 70% at the moment!?
      I’m glad to hear that she’s not madly noisy, much less wearing on you lot than if she were.
      Yes, Falmouth, the Fal river estuary, Cornwall. Good protected deep draught moorings and pretty much everything you’d need if anything’s broken on the way.
      If you do come by here just send me a Hi 👋 message reply to one of my posts here, it should come up in my notifications.
