I was 6 when Hank broke the record. Watched it with some buddies. I was on the east coast so it happened around 9pm EST. Good luck with your set goals.
That's a great memory with you and your buds. Thanks for watching!
Hi Rick, we got the eclipse at 3:18 EST and it was completely dark. The solar street lights went on. It got noticeably colder too
I enjoyed listening to your memories (or lack thereof lol) of 715. It does showcase how times are different compared to today. Information is far easier to get and events are not as grandiose as they were then. We seem to make a big deal out of a lot things now, which means things are often not as big of a deal.
I believe the player on the 68 checklist is Clete Boyer. The Yankees traded him and he had some pretty good offensive years with the Braves.
Great looking Lombardi card. Nice pickup. I love the design of 34 Goudey. The player silhouettes give the cards some flair. Yeah, it seems normal to want to focus on fewer cards. As you know, I am a proponent of planning and a controlling the growth of your collection. I know you are too.
That’s awesome you’re almost done with the 61 All Stars.
I enjoyed.
Ahhh Terry, then you should have done a show from outside, not me! Of course, I am sure you had better things to do during a total eclipse than being on CZcams. HAHAHA. It must have been amazing where you were. I saw ABC News was at Niagara Falls, so it didn't hit me you were in the dark.
Yeah, looking back at that 715 day, it was a big deal but not by today's standards. You're right, today a guy get four hits in a game and he can be the top story at 11pm. hahaha
Yup, it's Clete Boyer. People have let me know. You know, maybe if the Yanks had kept Tresh, Peptone and Boyer with a young Bobby Murcer and then Thurman Munson and Roy White would have come along the Yanks may have done something in the early 70s. Who knows? Those guys I mentioned all seemed pretty beat up by then.
Lombardi was a nice pickup and addition to my collection, which is what I love the most about collecting.
Thanks for watching!
Nice miss, Rick! But you are excused. Little league practice is arguably more important than the most historic home run in baseball history. I was in my freshman year at UCLA and watched on TV at my fraternity house listening to Vin Scully make the call, a classic call. I was so frustrated seeing those two guys run around the bases with Hank, kinda wrecked the visual for me. But it was a great moment.
From Vince Scully.... “A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol. What a marvelous moment for baseball. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia. What a marvelous moment for the country and the world."
Nice Lombardi pickup. I am with you. Shifting focus to collecting cards that, as you said, get you excited.
Ahhh little league practice. Where we warmed up, took infield practice. Pitchers would then go off for pitching practice, batters would do some type of base running drill, then we'd all do batting practice, run laps and listen to a lecture. All that at nine years old.
I think Aaron bailed those two guys out of jail that night.
Scully's call is priceless. Still sounds just as profound today as it did 50 years ago. Thanks for watching!
Great video Rick! I Agree that as we get older, our focus does seem to shift a bit. I'll probably never do another set (unless it's a subset), but I do enjoy picking up individual cards and memorabilia that excites me. Sounds like you got an great deal on that awesome Lombardi card. Have a great week my friend.
Thanks Mike. For me, the sets have literally started become a chore. I still hope to do 1-2 more, but I am taking a break after 1963 is complete. Are you going to the Lake Elsinore show this weekend?
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Hi Rick. No, unfortunately I have commitments this weekend. Weekends are kinda bad the next few months. Are you going...if so, hope it's a good one!
@@mikethesportshistorycollec1947 Nahhh, I was too lazy to drive all the way out there. I think Pasadena will be my next show.
Congrats on 100 episodes! Not sure if you are aware, but Rich Kee, the Dodger's official photographer in the 70s and 80s, is giving a lecture with a curated selection of his photos at the downtown LA central library on Wed, April 17 from 12:15 - 1:30. I can't make it but sounds like something you would enjoy.
Thank you! This will be the second time I am going to miss Rich Kee. He was at Whittier College last year with a couple of Dodger players and GM Fred Claire. I hope to catch him next time. Thanks for letting me know!
The checklist player is Clete Boyer. Us old time Beckett users can always get that info.
New watcher and new sub too #321!! Came from John’s channel shoutout!! Wanted show some YT love!!! I also picked up that Hank not lon g ago!!!
THANK YOU! I just subbed you as well. Look forward to seeing your content. Thanks for watching!
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Thank you! Same goes for me as well! I will watch more of your channel as well!
You could have always listen to the ballgame on a transiter radio, in 1974.
Which is true, but there was no way on earth could I do that at practice. My coach, Mr. Miller had quite the temper. I did used to bring the radio around that time to school. Back then it was like bringing a bomb with you. You didn't want your teacher to know you had one.
It's Clete Boyer on the 7th series checklist.
Clete Boyer? Damn! I thought it was Rico Petrocelli but he never played for the Braves.
You're not the only one to miss the historic homer. And at least you had a good reason. My buddy had the game on, and I fell asleep! I forgot, are you collecting all the 1963s graded? It's fitting that it took you a long time to get the Ernie Lombardi, the slowest man in baseball.
You fell asleep? LOL I like that one. My 1963 set is mainly ungraded. I may have 15-20 graded cards in there. 41 Play Ball graded was enough for me! LOL!
Love that 34’ Goudey! Really great image and deal you got! It will be cool to see how your collection changes. Not focusing on sets I’m sure you’re going to pickup some really awesome cards that fit perfectly into those displays. Thanks for sharing.
And thanks for watching. Love adding a card like Ernie Lombardi!
