Bought the HP about a month ago from West Marine and never saw a reason to use the G2 router. Hooked HP to power supply, power supply to my WiFi 6 home router with an enclosed Starlink Kit cable!
Would rather have had $100 credit and they could have kept the router. OR perhaps... $100 credit toward purchase of G3 router.

On a side note, cost not considered, I dumped the substandard Gen 3 Starlink router for a TP-Link AXE5444 Tri Band WiFi 6 and couldn't be happier. I don't use the WiFi 6, but router setup was stupid simple and the router is extremely configurable , especially for the VPN user. One high note in dumping the Starlink router is that I print over the network directly to my Konica Minolta printer and the Starlink router kept changing the printers IP address on my network. The TP-Link router has NEVER done this.

POE is what you need to save power and convert your system to 12v, 24v setups to save power. It’s hugely inefficient (in our case) to take 12v and convert it to 110v just so the router can step it back down to 48v. 😊

@@jcristina kamikaze, POE = 48v. Which is international power over twisted pair cabling (used for UTP gigabit Ethernet). This is what Starlink uses for powering and data from the Ethernet interface device (with POE to the dish), which typical use will have a hard wired gigabit Ethernet connection to a user UTM/firewall. Your suggestion is not accurate. It is against code to run 120AC up to the dish (for good reason). 48V DC is efficient for power delivery. There are thousands of component suppliers that make 48V items for building network and power delivery. For example, Elon Musk (who listened to us long time ago), got on board with POE 48 volt gigabit data and power backbone for the Cyber Truck. Saving hundreds of pounds of copper (much more weight than used in the electric motors), lower complexity than legacy CAN bus.

$99 month rental for high performance is not bad. No repair issues, damage, whatever. On SpaceX. Also, in 30 months from now, they will have the jiggabit speed dish by then. Obsoleting the current product. So, trade for new one for $99 a month. NPV price between renting and buying is very close. Actually when considering use of case for business, NPV is better for 24-30 months than outright purchase.

I think this is a good move given the choice between an actual price hike, or paying the same and no router to substitute the price hike. I definitely prefer to use my own router and wifi as I have plenty put into it, and it works much better for my setup. ISP's don't need any control into my network beyond the WAN side of a modem.

Funny how the regular starlink dish was used by private sailboat cruisers all over the world and never had a problem. Apparently the standard system is quite capable of working in a mobile situation. Perhaps with out quite the reliability of the "commercial" version. I don't see any reason why the standard can't be offered to private customers for use world wide.

This might be a good thing?
My guess is Starlink maybe working towards allowing private IP access instead of being stuck using just the app on our phone in order to access the information for our network etc. we can possibly start accessing it all on PC as well and their working towards a new user interface.
By not offering and producing private routers I would think this could alleviate cost and allow them to transfer their resources to more crucial areas of the overall experience for users.
By not providing a router this would allow customers to spend that extra money on a specific router that they may want and feel might be more competitive compared to Starlinks router options.

@@jcristina absolutely at the very least. $250 discount would make sense since their not providing the router anymore.
I at least hope some of this will translate to more pro consumer decisions.

As of today, $200/month is going to be $400/month for "mobile global". :( On the router issue: I was considering a separate router as I needed both wifi and wired. The gen 2 router that came with my kit only has wifi. So the reasoning behind the uncoupling of the antenna and router seems to be good. The hidden price hike is a bad policy. I do have different router requirements, firewall rules, sub-network configuration, guest wifi vs secure wifi. The recent price hike for the service is a bummer. It will take another 3 months to be active but certainly makes me rethink my choices.

As stated, the flat panel high-performance Starlink antenna is primarily for business/government-type users. These users are almost always plugging into their own network equipment. This means that they must dispose of (and pay for the disposal) of the Starlink wireless router. By the way, Starlink is moving on to its new 4th-generation router. These changes were announced to their premium customers last month. These users are also buying dozens of these systems at a time, which would require them to dispose of dozens of routers. These terminals also usually support dozens to hundreds of users at a time on one terminal. The Starlink routers can only handle so many users. The high-end network equipment these users use has many more security features and options than the Starlink routers. The Starlink routers to these end-users are literally in the way. Those few nonbusiness/government users willing to pay the $2500 that would be a marginal improvement (the difference is primarily in slightly less satellite downtime, usually measured in seconds) should be looking toward equipment other than the Starlink router. These high-end users are also willing to pay for premium services. The prices that you are listing are for fixed-location priority services. Global roaming priority service would be $250, $1000, and $5000 monthly.

@deanz4065 I am simply (currently) a homebody and went for the HP immediately. I MAY at some point transfer the HP to my boat and/or truck, but I live in SW Florida across the peninsula from Joe and NEEDED the survivable wind rating of 174MPH (vs. 60MPH) and PREFERRED the field of view of 140° (vs. 110°). The last two significant southwest FL hurricanes have handed me a combined loss of $250,000.

    • @deanz4065
      @deanz4065 Před 27 dny +1

@@SARDOGFL On a moving vehicle like a boat, the improved angle of view will be more significant than on a fixed building. As more satellites are launched, this will become less significant as more satellites will be directly above the terminal. This would result in fewer dropouts. If many users make things like phone calls, even a slight reduction in these dropouts can be significant across the group. For only a small number of individuals, these dropouts may not be as overall substantial, but on the other hand, if you're calling your mother for Mother's Day, it can be annoying. It's more a factor of how much the money to the inconvenience matters to you. You could get better performance with better end-user equipment than spending on the more expensive antenna. But if one can afford both and has the money, you may become the Marina hotspot (yes, there is a pun here). There is a significant other downsize to the HP antenna. It uses significantly more power. If one is going to be power-constrained, the smaller terminal is the better choice, no matter the cost. Starlink is removing the articulated terminals for newer, smaller flat-panel antennas. The wind rating on those terminals is primarily determined by how you mount them. The weakest link is often the pole mount rather than the antenna itself.

@deanz4065 my reward from the 09/22 Hurricane Ian was a destroyed roof (and so much more). But with some quick temporary repairs, the home was still habitable. However... Comcast/Xfinity (Cable TV, landline, Internet) was out for 6 weeks, and Verizon didn't even have text service for 2 weeks.
I decided that with Starlink as ISP (and my existing whole-house emergency generator), I would be able to maintain the entire Comcast TV service (using Xfinity Stream App on each Amazon Firestick), a household ISP, and complete cell service via ISP for 2 families in my Smarthome with 85+ devices... all off my home router/switch.
Friends from "Pine Island" that was largely destroyed, moved in with me for 2 months. We eventually got all of Xfinity and Verizon services back, but I feel fairly confident we essentially would NEVER have lost them if I would have had reliable Starlink service then.
After my roof and pool cage and boat canopy and dock electric were repaired... I felt it was time to install the Starlink HP system that I hope is the best.
Don't know that the Starlink and service will get to the boat (still partially hurricane damaged), or the truck, but you do have a worrisome point I suppose regarding excessive potential power draw for the HP.
With the upcoming hurricane season predicted as record, I simply hope that I get through by lowering the telescoping flagpole and removing the HP prior to Category 1's or 2's.

The starlink routers suck anyway. All generations of starlink routers suck in their capabilities. The dish however is the real thing and rocks.
If they can actually make the starlink dish completely operatable without that router thing that would be perfect.
