  • On my long overdue quest to learn modern scenery techniques...I am practicing the dark art of Static Grass! One thing I have learnt is , that the stuff goes everywhere , which can be a hazard on a running railroad..not to mention the clean up! While trying to do small areas of grass, it soon became apparent that the standard applicators make a big mess and are not suited to small detailed areas, so I decided to splash out and try WWS small but very easy to use "Precision" applicator . This was my first trial of this unit and I must say I'm very impressed with how accurately you can place the grass , with very little waste and clean up. While you still need the bigger applicators, this detailing tool is a great addition to your scenery kit!
    Gregg .

    I must save my pennies for one of these getting into small tight corners would be one of the useful things the bigger ones have a lot of limitations there. I have a much bigger one that I built from a £3 fly swat bought on eBay and a few other bits which works well. The other thing I use is a foot or ankle stocking to put over the vac tube to collect up the unstuck fibres for reuse. I find them useful for scattering over tree armatures to form the fine branches or the base for a pine tree. Neil

    HI Gregg ,that review was very helpful ,I must admit that I've been struggling with applying it to the areas needed finally someone has made an applicator that is more user friendly instead of these big cumbersome traditional units.
    The applicator I have is as about as useful as a chocolate teapot , so I will looking at getting that unit .
    I've also found if the grass is to green I put that into a coffee grinder and add small amount of yellow artist acrylic water based paint ,this will get the correct colour you're after.
    Keep up the great work , and stay stay safe .

      @FishplateFilms  Před 4 lety

      Thank you Shaun! The big ones are ok for large areas, but most of us don't have fields to cover! A mid sized one would be ideal with different screens. You're right about the green , I am finding less is more when it comes to dark or bright greens ...all a learning curve ! But I do like the "Spring" grass as it has a little brown and pale green in it .

      Hi Chantal , you will enjoy using it , especially on small areas and it's great for making small trees and bushes too! The wire is just a bit of cable , stripped at each end, but you could use any stiff wire , or even a bit of coat hanger! Yes , 2-4 mm works best in this one!

      @@FishplateFilms Still haven't used it yet but I have another question for you! I've seen on some other videos that other static grass applicators, you need to "discharge them" by touching the part that would be clipped to the nail to the mesh once it's turned off. It causes a spark and then you're good to put it away. Is there anything like that on here? I've never used a static grass applicator before so just trying to learn everything I can before using it.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  Před 2 lety +1

      @@chantalgiroux51 Hi Chantal ,
      The only reason for that would be to stop yourself from getting a shock ( a tiny one) while you put it away. The stored energy in the capacitors is not enough to cause any damage and it would discharge it self in a minute or so anyway...unless you are using it in a room full of petrol vapours..LOL.
      You'll be fine , so just have a go ! It is a bit addictive 🙂

    Funny coincidence Greg, I've been researching static grass applicators and kind of settled on the Peco "micro" mainly because it's a brand name and a reasonable price. I might now reconsider to this one. Is it available here in Aus and not being panic bought at the moment?

      Hi Richard, this mob make the Peco one , which is the "Micro" model I have. It is good but this one is great for smaller jobs. You get them from the WWS website , they have good postage and quick shipping. As I say it would be perfect if they made one in the middle with different mesh screens. Hi Trevor, WWS make the Peco model which is the same as my "Micro" . I don't know why they don't offer a small screen option, as the 2mm does fall out quickly! You could try it but you may need to make it out of wire mesh to keep the current flow? Maybe some wire fly screen might work and cut it to sit inside over the bigger one?
