- Tokyo's Ameyoko Market is the city's street food paradise. There is no debate. The market street runs for 400 meters along the Yamanote Line from Okachimachi to Ueno Station. There are hundreds of shops selling all kinds of delicious foods but its the market's past that makes it unique.
▶︎ HISTORY
Ameyoko was Tokyo's black market during the US Occupation between 1945 and 1952, a place where you could get expensive and highly regulated goods like sugar.
▶︎ The "Ame" in Ameyoko means CANDY in Japanese.
But "ame" also stands for "AMErica" since the market sold so many good broght in by US Servicemen during the occupation. You can still see sun glasses, watches, and Zippo lighters sold on the street to this day.
The market has changed a lot over the last 75 years.
After being a black market, it became home to Tohoku's seafood in the 1950s since nearby Ueno is the city's gate to the north of the country. In the 1970s and 80s, immigrants from abroad made their homes in the area and there is a growing variety of foods. With more tourists flooding the market, stands are converting from shops to restaurants at night, tables spilling into the streets.
And then there is STREET FOOD galore!
In this episode:
★ Kaisendon (Tokimakidon) 750 Yen
★ Takoyaki 200 yen for 4
★ Potato-Rella Cheese Stick 480 yen
★ Kakigori (Kyoto Uji Kinji Milk) 400 yen/
★ Sake & Oyster Set 500 yen
★ Super Chocolate Bag 1000 yen

I visit Ameyoko every time I go to Tokyo. Normally because I bought too many souvenirs and need another bag to lug it all home. This is probably the best place to get cheap luggage among other things. The food is also an excellent value and very delicious. An often ignored Asian / international market is located underground, below the center building. This underground market is one of a few places in Tokyo known to stock halal foods.
My brother told me about it when he went to japan. Sadly he will not take me nor teach me japanese saying i was annoying. I hope i can go when i am older (with my bff's).
Nosh Abroad Noted...Hoping to go to Tokyo soon ☺️👌
in this instance 横 probably means side or beside.
You could maybe mail stuff home as you get box full stuff ..
KLEY MOORE :That certainly is an option. It's a difficult balancing act of size, weight and cost. In most cases mailing it home would be very expensive. For example, this most recent trip i brought home a Balmuda Toaster, a Takoyaki grill and a ton of candy and cosmetics for friends and family. My Delta Sky Miles lets me take 3 over-weight bags with me so buying an extra suitcase for $25 is a better option.
Love it John. This is one of your best videos. Street food is so amazing in Japan.
based eric

The Kaisendon. That's my favorite all-time Japanese dish.

Hey John I’m going to Japan 🇯🇵 next year and this is on my bucket list and I love this video
Make sure to buy a JR rail pass in the US. If you are going to use the train a lot it will save you a whole lot of money.
THANK YOU JOHN! This was a HIGHLIGHT of my Japan trip.
Love your content!
Omg that was fantastic 👍👌😀
Congratulations on another great film about the hidden wonders of Japan. This place is being added to my Tokyo adventure list for when I (one day soon) cone to explore. Fried cheese, katsudon and all that candy, YES PLEASE!!!
Kaisendon! Not Katsudon.
Katsudon is a totally different dish involving cutting up and frying pork cutlet served over rice with a tangy sauce, and an egg cracked over the whole thing.
In fact there are several videos on CZcams that show you how to make katsudon if you're interested.
It's actually pretty easy to make.
Just make sure that you know the difference before you go to Japan, after all, you don't want to accidentally get the wrong dish.
Firestar KNOWS I also love Katsudon :) it's in my top 5!!
@@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN - Katsudon is good stuff, no denying that.
I have just discovered this channel. I LOVE IT! Thank you so much for the great content.

Yay! So glad you're making videos here again. Hard to invest the time needed to watch the Go series.
Wonderfully produced video!
I like your off-camera commentary, which has the same excitement as a carnival barker.
Best channel :)
Yep!
the video is very insightful about Japanese culture, and I like he personality very pleasant and friendly.
yessssssss i love these type of videos!!! keep them coming!
So much to see in Tokyo that gems like this easily get missed.

What I like about your videos is how you show people from outside Japan that the people are not so formal, and there is a fun element to Japanese culture..

This is one of the best CZcams discoveries for me. Just came across the series during the weekend and is super engaging.
this channel reminds me of the good old days of travel television. it's somehow unlike other travel videos on youtube; a little more relaxed.
I would sit there an eat so much raw fish, those bowls looks so good.
Aww we missed out! Didn’t take advantage of trying the yummy street food
