    How to protect the banana plant Musa Basjoo for winter. Also known as the Green Banana. This plant is relatively hardy and can be left outdoors and in the ground in the UK with the appropriate protection. I am removing most of the leaves, and wrapping the trunk in some insulation then adding a further layer of weed control membrane. You could also use horticultural fleece, anything breathable to prevent condensation.

    The 'trunk' of the banana plant is actually not a trunk at all, it is made up of leaf stems. The banana is herb, it is herbaceous. I am hoping to preserve my leaf stems so that I have extra height next year.
    I have heard of people bringing these plants indoors, especially when in pots, but as mine are in the ground I am leaving them in situ but protecting them

    Great job, Mark. I'll be wrapping mine tomorrow with a combination of straw, chicken wire and fleece. Definitely some frosts on the way. ❄️

      Hi. How's it going? We had frost on the cars this morning. I think worse is due. I'm grabbing several barrow loads of manure today.

    Great job Mark! Hopefully, the winter will be mild again, although looking at the weather late next week here, we could be in for some very cold temperatures! I'm going to protect mine this weekend in preparation ❄

      Sorry peter i replied using the wrong channel. Thank you for this. I rewatched your guidance yesterday. I think your wall will protect yours too i expect?

      @@MarksHouseandGardenUK Yeah, I think the wall did help it last year. The pseudostem of the main plant is now above the height of the wall, and the largest pup is about as tall as the wall (without the leaves), I'm hoping I can keep the height of them as much as possible, I didn't lose any height last year but it will have got more protection being below the top of the wall. I'm sure yours will do really well in that very well-protected location 👍

    Good ideas there. I got a lovely surprise my first years when I first moved here, some lovely cannas popped up in a half barrel (planted by previous people) the barrel fell to bits and I moved the cannas, sadly they've never returned.
    Your butcher story reminded me of our family butcher in Wales, he used to jokingly chase us kids with the big knife, I was quite scared of him, it had sawdust on the floor as well I remember, not a good grip for running away. 😂

    Love the insulation. I have a no cover quilt made out of rpb, it's very cosy. My bananas in Cornwall service well but I do wrap the bottoms.

    Hi Mark,
    Just a quick question, did you put anything ontop of the musa basjoo during winter or did you just leave them as is. Kind regards Julie🌴🪴🌴

      Hi Julie, sorry I missed this comment. I eventually folded the single leaf down and put some insulation and weed fabric over the top to form a kind of water shedding hood. Mark

    Hi Mark, Is the weed control fabric any specific brand, or as long as its Polypropylene is it fine? Thanks

      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před rokem +1

      Hi. I think any which is breathable. Let's air pass through will do. It is more fabric in texture than polythene/plastic. The quite cheap stuff will do the job. Mark

    Hi am after advice. I wrapped my bannan plants and put in the green house. But some off the trunks have gone mushy. Can I save them. I ended up with the plants after my partner left. . Can you advise ?

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před rokem

      the trunks may be mushy (mine are too) but there may be life under ground. I would suggest keeping them somewhere cool but where they won't freeze, be patient, when the weather warms up you may be rewarded with banana 'pups' around the base. I would advise against watering. just let them be. Fingers crossed. Best wishes . Mark

    Isn’t this insulation just going to get waterlogged and freeze? Surely it needs shielding from the rain too?

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před 7 měsíci

      As I say in the video. It's not absorbent. It doesn't hold water. Hence it's better (in my opinion) than absorbent woolly insulation.

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před 7 měsíci

      Also, it's wrapped in weed fabric which stops the majority of the rain.
