  • What is government and how did it come to be? The social contract is the idea that the existence of the government is in fact a contract between people and rulers. The population give up their freedom and give power to certain individuals in exchange for the maintenance of peace and safety. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both had theories around the Social Contract. Watch as George and John explain each of their Social Contract theories and critically assess.

  • @ethmanuelkwamenyamenkwa1537

    According to Locke the state of nature was bounded by laws derived from rational thoughts since humans are rational beings... I may think that in the earlier state before human development there was no sense or too many cases of brutality and wrong doing. Then why the need for a social contract to have our properties secured if safety was assured in the state of nature?

    • @sylmaerie
      @sylmaerie Před 7 měsíci

      i’m SOOOO late but part of locke’s state of nature is that every man has equal right to enforce the laws of nature on every other man, which includes punishment for violating those laws (ie infringing on life, liberty, and property). locke argued that a situation where each individual enforces their own justice leaves open the potential for “justice” to become biased and self interested and more about revenge than anything else. so while the state of nature is not a violent bloody war like hobbes’ is, it’s by no means safe. people’s life liberty and property rights are constantly threatened by others, and because of our bias/self interest we’re also not very good at enforcing justice on each other when those rights are violated. so it’s better and safer to authorize a government to enforce those protections for us
